My cat is a sexist
I have a cat.
I've had her for 4 years. She's 15. She belonged to my ex GF. One time, my ex went to Europe shortly after my dad died and she asked me to watch Spook while she was there for 2 weeks. At first I protested, but somehow, I got roped into it. My ex explained that her dad wasn't responsible enough to feed Spook, etc. She also stated that Spook didn't like women. (Spook is female.) The first time, I met Spook, she seemed like a pretty friendly cat, but my ex insisted that it was very unusual behaviour for her. Anyway, my ex brought Spook over and she promptly ran under a bed and hid out for the rest of the day, finally emerging only when the hunger got to be too much for her. My ex remarked to me that "maybe I'll get lucky and she'll run away." I thought that was pretty peculiar. About 2 or 3 days later, Spook and I were getting along like 2 kindred spirits. Hanging out, watching TV together, sharing pizza (seriously). When my ex came back from Europe, she came upstairs, Spook took one look at her and ran down into the basement and hid under a table (no joke). I went down to retrieve her and she was looking at me, and I was looking at her and I knew - she didn't want to go. So I said to my ex, "if you don't want Spook, I'll keep her." Immediately, the answer was, "Ok" Well, the ex and I broke up shortly thereafter. Spook really helped me survive that time in my life. But I've noticed that she definitely doesn't like women. It's wierd, but obviously cats can distinguish human males from human females, which is something that is interesting for me. If I'm patting Spook, she'll be purring away. If my current GF comes over to my place, Spook will immediately stop purring (like shutting off a switch). She'll get all defensive and will immediately take off to another part of the house. At best she will tolerate my current GF. I have one female friend who LOVES cats and when she comes over, for some reason, Spook despises her. (She has long dark hair and so did my ex, Spook's former owner). Spook will become stiff as a board and if my friend comes near her, Spook will hiss at her, which is very uncharacteristic of Spook. In 4 years, she's only hissed at me once when she was stoned on some cat nip (no more cat nip for Spook). My friend will sometimes pick Spook up and it's one his after another. Anyway, I find Spook's behaviour and jealousy very interesting. I didn't think that cats got jealous, but this one sure does. It's not a stranger thing because she doesn't get that way with my male friends, it's a female thing. This cat just doesn't like women. Meow. Last edited by james t kirk; 04-13-2008 at 04:11 PM.. |
