Hey, wifey's welcome to come play in the caboose too. Could get the whole family in there, even. Sounds like a fun time to me!

paddyjoe 11-24-2007 08:36 AM

flyman, you rock like no other.......

doodlebird 11-24-2007 08:45 AM

that is one of the best ideas i've seen in a long time.

i applaud you for your recycling efforts.

to curb the proliferation of "temporary buildings" (prefabs) on elementary school campuses (here in the US - maybe not up North), i'd like to see them use your old rail car idea. - what young kid wouldn't LOVE to go to class in an old train car??? sell the idea man. hook up with your buddy with crane and come make your millions here.

Fly 11-24-2007 08:58 AM

that's a good idea doodle........see i don't know about in the States but...up here, they don't run a caboose anymore..........and about 10/15 years ago, they were just giving them away........and as of recently.....i was lookin' at $45,000 to $55,000.........just to purchase one.that didn't even include me moving it to my place.

with this one.........i got it for "FREE".........and i only have to pay a couple grand to get her moved here.

score............

and i never looked at it as recycling.......what a bonus that is eh......

this one they were just gonna rip apart and turn her into scrap so.......

why not right?

i have until June 15th to have it completley off of the property it sits on so.....more than enough time.

happy,happy dude right here baby

splck 11-30-2007 10:39 AM

puts a whole new twist to - What's that I hear? Is that a train?

Leto 11-30-2007 01:12 PM

that's so cool. Makes me long for the days when we had cabooses. where about is it, and where are you moving it to?

BadNick 11-30-2007 01:14 PM

Very cool idea, good luck with it. Without divulging the exact location if you don't want to, about where on the CP is it?

With the company I work for, our largest customers are the U.S. and Canadian railroads so I'm aware of the demise of the caboose. I think it's mainly due to union labor changes where the guys who used the cabooses were negotiated out of their jobs due to more automation.

Tophat665 11-30-2007 05:02 PM

As usual Fly, you rock.

The one thing I worry about is, once it becomes your caboose, how are you going to keep it from growing hair all over it?

it's on a property that is about half an hour from my place.just sitting in the middle of nowhere.....

i'll need a big bugger crane to get it to my place..........

i'm right on the Fraser River....and there's a trestle right close by,we see trains and i mean alot of trains daily going over the river....

should fit in down here well

Ha, I was thinking the same thing.
There is definately too much focus on Fly's Cabbose here on TFP.

Bossnass 12-04-2007 02:22 PM

Three summers ago I helped with a caboose move. It was easier than most because on the 15ish km move there was no low powerlines or bridges and the guy that bought it was the owner of the lowboy truck that was used. So it was pretty much a case of dragging it onto the bed, moving it very very slowly (it was over-height and tippy), then dragging it off onto the prepared pad/ties/rails. Made life much easier than worrying about the $2000/day cranes.

Also, this is awesome. I would love to restore one. The one I saw was a newer CP, but it was too much metal and not enough character.

Fly 12-04-2007 02:53 PM

yeah so far.........i'm lookin' in and around 2-3 grand for the move......

soon as the winter pisses off.......i'm gonna start preparing the place in the horse field where she's gonna sit.....rails,ties,etc.

i'm gonna try and do it up original on the outside as best i can but........the inside ain't gonna look like the inside of a caboose i tell ya'.

the only part inside that is staying is gonna be where the cupola is located......2 nice little seats up high.....otherwise it's gonna house the recording studio.

Tophat665 12-04-2007 06:35 PM

This may be the first time in recorded history where there;s more smoke coming out of the caboose than the locomotive. A couple seats up in to cupola sounds like the very place to ponder man's relation to vegetation.

Fly 12-04-2007 07:18 PM

Top doood...........

you don't even know man.............:D

blahblah454 12-04-2007 08:16 PM

Dude, that is fucking awesome!!!! That has to be the greatest idea I have ever heard of!!

I am jealous. I live in the bloody city and I would get shot if I put something like that on my property

Fly 12-05-2007 05:02 AM

i get a 50/50 response........

"hey man,that's a cool idea"

"hey man,you're fucking whacked"

i can deal with them both........:D

bobby 12-06-2007 07:10 AM

Fly 12-06-2007 07:13 AM

i won't have it moved here until after the winter.........that gives me some time to get the base ready for the ties and rails........

thanks for the link to that site too bobby...

Charlatan 12-06-2007 08:03 AM

Fly... that's just awesome.

I missed this when you first posted it... I am so jealous. I've always wanted a caboose.

It's good to see that these cool treasures are getting put to good use... I can't believe they were just going to scrap this one.

bobby 12-06-2007 09:03 AM
