Alcoholic Beverages, what gets you?
I guess I realized today when I was sitting at a bar for a guitar hero tournament that I really have no freaking clue about mixed drinks or whatever. I hate, hate, hate, despise, cannot stomach any of the typical "beer", i've tried a lot of different kinds, I'm sorry, I prefer alcohol that tastes like kool-aid vs tastes like rotten soda (I guess I'm saying I'm not a big fan of carbonation)
What are the more "popular" universal mixed drinks that you'd recommend? I prefer stuff that tastes good, I'm not really all feeling like my masculinity is threatened at all if i'm not drinking the stuff that my dad insists would "put hair on your balls" I just want it to taste good. i'm just tired of having servers come upto me and be like "what would you like" and me sitting there going.... "gee, I really don't know what there is" so, serve me, bitches! :D |
I don't really like beer that much myself, but I do like Blue Moon. Mixed drinks...I prefer rum and coke. :|
Rum Runners are actually really really delicious if made right. |
|
My personal preferences:
In summer, mojitos. Or any time I want to feel like it's summer. Superfine sugar, mint, lime, rum, and club soda. Yum. In winter, bourbon and club soda. This is not a beginner's drink. I don't recommend it if you like your mixed drinks to taste fruity. My recommendations: Try a Cape Codder (vodka and cran, sometimes served with a lime), a Seabreeze (vodka, cran, grapefruit juice), Bay Breeze (vodka, cran, pineapple juice), and a Cosmopolitan (vodka, cran, triple sec, lime) next time you go out. The Cape Codder is especially good if you're trying to watch your calories. Mixed drinks are full of hidden calories. Watch out. |

hahahah...........i can't help.........i really don't like hard liquor. 'cept vodka in ceasers every now and again. bring on the wobbly pops baby.......... |
B52's
bailys irish creme kahlua gran marnier |
Blue-label Smirnoff, neat or on-the-rocks.
Why is a "Slippery Nipple" called a "Cowboy Cocksucker" in certain circles? I can stand on my head on concrete. You might drink what you like and go from there? |
How about a good fresh Sangria.
Sit on your patio, drink a pitcher and never notice what hit you when you try to stand up. |
mmmm.... jager and rockstar.... daddy likey.

Now I don't feel so bad, Shauk. That's exactly how I was(ordering) and am(taste preference), so I feel for you. I cannot stand beer or hard liquor. I can tolerate wine, but wine coolers are good. I've tried a few types of mixed drinks over the years, and discovered I don't like much "bite" in my drink, either. I don't like anything in my soda. Brandy, in anything, is icky to me.
If you want to see what exists, try this website: http://www.webtender.com/ Things that I have tried and liked: *wine coolers (strawberry or pina colada types) *strawberry daiquerri (frozen drink, sweet, strawberry flavored) *pina colada (frozen drink, pineapple/coconut flavored) *amaretto on the rocks (amaretto is almond flavored) you'll probably taste some alcohol, but not nearly as much bite. *amaretto sour (amaretto with sour in it is a little like lemonade) *Bailey's (irish cream) and coffee (if they don't have Bailey's they will tell you what brand they do have like Carolyn's or Brandon's...it's all irish cream) A spanish coffee is going to have bite, I don't like them. It has coffee, irish cream, frangelicas, and I think brandy. I think it is the frangelicas and brandy that I don't like) *Ski Lift is hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps in it. Very yummy. Not too sweet, a little minty. I have tried someone's iced tea drink once and it was okay, but some iced tea drinks bite. |
Baybreeze... vodka (Skyy 90 is best), cranberry and a splash of pineapple.
use the Diet Ocean Spray cranberry for 0 carbs, 5 calories in that juice. Seabreeze is the same but with grapefruit juice instead of pineapple... which i find repulsive. Stick with pineapple Can't go wrong with a little Corazon tequila in a glass, either. Just sip it. Or Gentleman Jack and Caffeine-Free Diet coke. I'll second the sangria and mojito votes from upstairs, there, too. And the Irish Car Bomb, which I've had two ways. Basically half a pint of Guinness, which doesn't taste a thing like Guinness or beer for that matter after you drop a shot of either Jameson's Irish Whiskey and Bailey's or Jameson's, Bailey's and Kahlua and slam that sucker. |
No mixed drink beats a margarita.

all good suggestions... but a couple more for your consideration:
Diet Pirate: Diet Coke & Captain Morgan's Dark Rum Whiskey Sour: Bourbon & Sour Mix Long Island Iced Tea: um... like 6 different kinds of liquor. tastes very good... but will knock you over, so be careful. Sour Apple Martini: (a personal favorite) Vodka and Sour Apple Schnapps. Oh... and just for the record... beer is good ;-) |
A friend of mine awhile back introduced me to a drink he called a "Linux"-- It's vodka, lime juice, and mountain dew. I mix mine about a quarter vodka, a quarter lime juice and half soda, but it's pretty hard to screw up. Unfortunately it seems nobody but me has ever heard of it.
If I'm at the bars and don't feel like explaining how to make a Linux, I usually just drink rum and coke. |
Mine right now is Jim Beam and Ginger.
Anything sours, basically. Whiskey is the classic, but Amaretto is good (though your masculinity will not be threatened due to a total lack thereof is this becomes your regular drink:-P), and Ginger Brandy Sours is superb. I've always found long island ice tea to be both delicious and effective. All the white liquors (vodka, rum, gin, tequila, and triple sec) with sours and a splash of coke for color. It will fuck you up without your ever knowing if it's done right. Done wrong, it's firewater. Margueritas of various types can also be excellent or insect repellant depending on how they're made. I recommend taking the time to find a good one, since a good one is truly a thing of beauty. Stick to the rail, though. No need to pay $8 a shot for good tequila you'll never taste. Seabreeze: Vodka, Cranberry, Grapefruit. Bay Breeze: Vodka, Cranberry, and Pineapple Cape Codder: Vodka and Cranberry with a wedge of lime. I find these all to be particularly good as a highball. Mix in an old fashion glass, pour into a Highball or pint, and fill with Ginger ale. Zombie, Suffering Bastard, and half the other drinks on a Polynesian Drink menu: Rum, Rum, Rum (maybe some rum too) and Fruit Juice. Those are distinct kinds of rum, mind you, and each brings a different quality of sweetness to the drink. Potentially lethal, frequently mixed to go down easier than a KKG on Grain Punch Night, but with all the stunning power of a crowbar to the forehead. I forget what it's called, and it sounds pretty nasty, but Tequila, Tia Maria, and Pineapple is a wonderful drink. Then there are the foo-foo drinks, the ones wot come with a paper umbrella and require a blender to make: Pina Colada, and the various Daquiris. Couldn't tell you what's in a Singapore sling besides booze and fruit juice, but they can be delicious. Pernod and Cider is wonderful, but probably not right up your alley. If you can find it, treat yourself to a Framboise, Cassis, Peche, or Kreik lambic. It is a beer, but it is nothing like anything you've every even considered before. Very much like fruit soda. Also, at the right time of day in the right frame of mind, a bloody mary can be a life changing event (Tomato juice or V8 or Mix, Black Pepper, Celery salt, horseradish, worcestershire, and vodka. Stir with a celery stalk. The perfect accompaniment to a cheese ommlete or a hangover.) Recognizing that bitter, solventy, smokey, and savory flavors are Acquired Tastes with respect to beverages, I recommend that you try to acquire them. Not to put hair on your equipment, but to open up a whole different realm of exploration. A person can spend a lifetime just trying different types of whiskys or brandies or idiosyncratic 700 year old recipe European liquors. And then there are over 27,000 different styles of beer. You've probably tried a half dozen if you were particularly adventurous. There's a lot more to beer than Budweiser and Guinness. Young primates like their fruit, but older primates learn to eat everything. |
Mason Mixin:
take a quart mason jar and fill it with crushed ice add 2 shots of your favorite vodka add 1 shot of amaretto fill with orange juice (or alternately pineapple juice) stir and enjoy |

Just downed a fifth of Chimay Grand Reserve. Trying to decide whether I want to follow it up with a fifth of Duvel and turn into a drooling idiot, or try something else under 9% abv.

vodka tonic! Oh man it's so good, it tastes like water. :)

I also like White Russians, and they're not really bitey at all if done right. One part Vodka, one part coffee liquor (most use Kalhua, but that shit's way too expensive for me and I've found the cheap stuff tastes just as good.), and a splash of milk. A variation on the White Russian is the White Irish. One part Irish whiskey (I personally like Bushmill's), one part coffee liquor, and a splash of Irish Cream. This is a really sweet son of a bitch, and it will have you spinning fast. If you like sweet a Copper Camel is nice. It's just a shot of butterscotch schnapps with irish cream floated on top. I can't drink these anymore as I had way too many a couple Halloweens ago. They are sweet. |
You want something easy to drink? Get grape 3-olives vodka ($13 a bottle, deal of the century) and a bottle of cranberry grape juice. This tastes so good you can actually drink it mixed at about 1:1 without getting an icky liqour face.
Seriously. Not even kidding. Also, Cherry 3-olives and redbull. Mmm. Whiskey sour with a splash of midori is also a good 'chick' drink. Washington apple (whiskey, apple pucker, and cranberry juice) also goes down easy. If you get the ratios right, 7&7 (7Up and Seagrams 7 Whiskey) isn't as harsh as it sounds. There's not much alcohol in it, but a good way to win a bet at a party is the fact that orange juice and Kaluha taste exactly like a tootsie roll. Try a gin and tonic, but only if you're willing to cough up the money for Bombay Sapphire...don't let anyone talk you into drinking beefeater, yuck! I've mostly learned to make tastey alcohol drinks due to girlfriends and wives. Perosnally, I alternate Jack and Coke, 7&7, and Whiskey Sour. Vodka Redbull or a Cherry bomb (cherry vodka dropped into redbull and chugged) if I'm sleepy or it's late. |
This weekend I found out Dirty Shirley's are good
Vodka, Sprite, and Grenadine with a cherry on top! Yum, yum, yum |
Gin and tonic... a classic with which you cannot go wrong. Drinking them makes me feel like an adult.
If you aren't ready for this much bitter, try the Gin Gimlet... 2 parts lime cordial to one part gin. Garnish with lime. Great summer drink. I like gin. |
I like gin too. So for me I have two hard liquor drinks that I default to:
- gin martini, stirred, wet & dirty (that means with more than a hint of vermouth and three dripping olives) - scotch, neat. The more peat the better. Current favourite is Lagavulin |
Lately, I've been alternating between G&T and Bourbon and Ginger with a good 5 or 6 dashes of Angostura bitters. I need to get me some good bourbon and some sweet and dry vermouth so I can start having manhattans again.
|
tanquary...........actually good shit to nip on time and again......
have a big bottle in my studio for the late night sessions.... with a fuckin' beer chaser of course.........woooooohooooooo |
After a few cerveza if you're hankering for something else, I used to drink this many years ago and recently I've gravitated to it again ...very smooth, I like the taste, and it's not overly sweet, and if you have a couple too many I find the aftereffects to be pretty smooth, too: tall glass with lots of crushed ice, half to 3/4 fill with a good gold tequila, top off with 7up, I like a wedge of lemon in it, though lime would also be good.

Well, I actually am a hard liquor man, myself-- single malt scotch, neat. But I hear you about hating the brews-- I can't take beer. To me it just tastes like rotten grain juice. I can drink wine coolers and stuff, but I agree, they're really just crappy, lightly alcoholic soda pop.
You might try hard cider. It has to be decent: Ace, Hornsby, and Blackthorn all suck big time. Woodchuck is decent, Strongbow is very decent, and there are a slew of microbrew ciders around the Northeast which range from drinkable to phenomenal. I am a huge cider fan, especially for when I want to drink, but not hard liquor. Mixed drinks...I like them, I have no issues ordering them, I just don't very often. I love frozen drinks in the summer-- pina coladas, frozen margaritas, daquiris: fruity umbrellas and all! Let's see...when I was a kid we all liked the good old fashioned Slow Comfortable Screw (vodka, So Co, OJ). And in college, we used to drink something called a Violent Fuck (32 of Jolt Cola with a hefty shot of everclear tossed into it), and it will get you blasted wasted, but I never saw anyone drink more than three without puking. In college, I was also fond-- for obvious reasons-- of a drink called Bongwater Sludge (vodka, anisette, chartreuse, chocolate liqueur, seltzer). An ex introduced me to a drink called the '57 Chevy, which was pretty good, though a little sweet to drink more than one (vodka, So Co, Grand Marnier, pineapple juice). A guy I worked with a couple of years ago favored one called the Purple Motherfucker, which was suprisingly tasty (vodka, So Co, Razzmatazz, amaretto, sour mix, 7-up). |
What gets me, is that faraway gaze, the person sitting across from me wears, as their fingertips trace and play with the condensation rivulets.
|
i love the Silver Bullet Shooters, all it is is:
1 1/2 oz. Peppermint Schnapps 1 1/2 oz. Vodka shake em with ice (if your a giant pussy :p), but it in a shooter, and down the hatch it goes. not only is it delicious, but it will have you rolling down the stairs in no time! |
