A DC-10 plane dropped fire retardant over a hillside to battle wildfires in Grimes Canyon in Fillmore, Calif., Tuesday. The 8,500-acre wildfire closed a college Wednesday and threatened 1,000 homes as hot, gusty Santa Ana winds fanned the flames.

Heavy smoke engulfed a forest in Mombeltran, Spain, Wednesday. The interior ministry said three-quarters of Spain is on “maximum” alert for wildfires.
