Hockey season is now upon us. And yet again this is the year (haha)! for us Leaf fans. Oh yes 40 years since, and next year we will saying it's been 41 years...
Interesting article (sorry no link this was emailed to me): Be-Leaf it or not . . . Bower's got the '67 bubbly if Leafs can win the Cup. 660 words Column By Bob Duff Windsor Star WINDSOR, Ont. - On the shelf of the bar in the basement of his Mississauga home, Johnny Bower keeps a prized possession, a link to the Toronto Maple Leafs' greatness of decades gone by. There sits a bottle of champagne, pilfered from the dressing room the night of May 2, 1967, when the Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens to capture the Stanley Cup, Toronto's most recent title. Nearly 40 years later, the bottle remains filled with the nectar of champions, while Toronto's dreams of another Stanley Cup parade remain unfulfilled. "When the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup in 1967, I grabbed two bottles of champagne," Bower recalled. "They were left in the dressing room, so I took them and hid them behind my bench." When Bower and his wife Nancy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 3, 1998, they popped the cork on one. The other was put aside, to be saved for another special occasion. "Nancy marked on the label, 'Do not open until the Leafs win the next Stanley Cup,' " Bower said. Anyone know the relative shelf life of champagne? The odds of that bottle being opened in the near future would appear about as likely as the triumph of the 1966-'67 Leafs figured to be when that season started. "Nobody gave us a chance to win that year," said Windsor's Marcel Pronovost, a defenceman with the Leafs that season. Toronto iced a lineup that year with an average age of 31.2 years and a dozen players 30 or older. "We were a bunch of old crocks,'' acknowledged George Armstrong, captain of that Leaf team, who was 36 at time. On defence, there was Allan Stanley (41), Tim Horton (37) and Pronovost (36). Centre Red Kelly was 39. In goal were Bower (42) and Terry Sawchuk (37). Most hockey experts figured the biological clock on Toronto's Stanley Cup hopes had long since expired, but instead of being over the hill, right-winger Ron Ellis, one of the few key Leafs that season under 30, felt that experience was the element which put Toronto over the top. "Most of those old guys had won three Cups together (from 1962-'64)," Ellis said. "They knew how to win and they taught that to us younger players." Nonetheless, their task still proved arduous. The Leafs actually set a club record for losses that season, dropping 10 straight from Jan. 15-Feb. 8, 1967. Coach Punch Imlach was hospitalized, suffering from exhaustion and assistant coach-general manager King Clancy briefly took the reins. "We almost didn't make the playoffs," Kelly said. "With about a month to go, it didn't look like we'd make it." The Leafs rallied to finish third, but the experts once more felt they were doomed as Toronto readied to face Chicago in the opening round of the playoffs. "Each game we beat Chicago, everybody said, 'Well that's it, Chicago will turn it around now,' " Pronovost remembered. "They had (Stan) Mikita, (Bobby) Hull, (Pierre) Pilote and (Glenn) Hall, all in their primes," Kelly said. "I remember our strategy was to keep them on their backhand. "That was around the time of the advent of the curved stick, so our game plan was to give them openings to force them to go to the backhand. "Their backhand shots weren't too effective." After beating the Blackhawks in six, Imlach convinced his over-the-hill-gang they had it made. "Chicago was the powerhouse of the league," Bower said. "Imlach kept telling us, 'Just get by Chicago. Montreal will be easier.' " Against the Habs, Toronto won three of the last four games, including a 3-1 triumph in the Game 6 series clincher. The city's hockey fans haven't had a reason to celebrate since. "I get asked all the time, 'When are the Leafs going to win the Cup?' " Bower said. "I always say 'Be patient, give them time.' And the response I've been getting lately is 'Time? For crying out loud, it's been 40 years.' "I don't really have an answer for that one." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ alas, champagne, like the optimism of (sane) Leaf fans, does not appear to have a long shelf life (see below), even if kept in a cool, dark place - like the basement of the Eastern Conference, perhaps? "Champagne is ready to drink when it is released from the suppliers and does not improve with age. Non-vintage Champagne has a shelf life of two to three years if stored in a cool dark place and on its side." http://www.champagne-cellar.co.uk/More/apocrypha.html |
