Basil and Sesame Street?
 

Thinking back to when I was a kid, I always remembered Basil being on Sesame Street as the CBC bear, I think he would always talk about CBC television. But it just hit me today that Sesame Street was an American television show, and wouldn't have had anything to do with the CBC.

Am I just thinking wrong or was Basil on the original sesame street, or was he just on Sesame Park. if he was I guess I just watched that show for longer than I thought I did.

Basil was created for Sesame Park and not on the original Sesame Street. He did have a special called Basil Hears a Noise that also had Elmo in it, so maybe that's where you're mixing things up.

I've had the privilege of visiting the Sesame Park set (not during production) and that was really neat to see.

I don't remember Basil.
Maybe it is becuase I was probably watching Sesame Street on the nearby US PBS channel.

I remember Basil! He had his friend Luis too! ^_^

The CBC took over Sesame Street years before it was reformatted to Sesame Park. It was known for a while as Canadian Sesame Street. I've never seen Sesame Park, but I do remember Basil. I think I stopped watching the program several years before the ill-fated reformat. I remember the Canadian takeover distinctly because they replaced the Spanish lessons with French lessons. Oh, and I seem to remember Basil being a new character during this change and I think he spoke French. I first started watching the American version when I was really young, so I witnessed all these changes taking place.

The Children's Television Workshop (the producers of Sesame Street) have created a number of localized versions of Sesame Street (usually in cooperation with a local production company or broadcaster). Some examples of Sesame Street around the world:

EDIT: I just found out that CTW is now called Sesame Workshop.

In England we just seem to get US Sesame Street. :(

I remember all of those versions... the US version... the Canadian version and seaseme park. Personally... they were all the same to me.

Except, only the U.S. version had.... Mr. Hooper.... [Now I'm feeling all verklempt... talk amongst yourselves...]

When Mr. Hooper was alive, there really only was one version of Sesame Street.

That was so long ago.

When I was a kid, I could watch two different versions of Sesame Street where I lived--the American version on PBS and the Canadian version on CBC. I usually watched both; the only really noticeable difference to me as a child was that Canadian Sesame Street taught you French and American Sesame Street taught you Spanish.

damn... if you didn't know when Mr. Hooper died they made a special episode to deal with it...

Skogafoss got to work on Sesame English not too long ago which was designed to help teach english as a second language to other countries.

I remember him on Seseme Street...but I guess he wasn't on there...another time that my memory has served me useless...:confused:

I never thought that I'd be able to bring this up, but my dad went to highschool with the man who voiced Basil the Bear. His name was Tim Gosley, and he still does puppetry work, as well as puts on performances for charity. I barely remember sesame street, and never noticed a distinction between the American and Canadian versions.

It's a small small world.
