Anybody feeling the GST Reduction?
I am not looking to have this thread be a political dicussion. I just want to know if any of you have felt the GST reduction yet.
Today I purchased my first Tim's Mediam Double Double since the the GST was reduced. When the sales lady rang up the sale she said "1.29". I was caught by surprise, I was sure I always paid over 1.30. Then I remembered that teh GSt was reduced. Nice. I will save a few ents when I buy a coffee. Actually, I will notice the few cents when I buy a coffee, you don't really notice it, unless you calculate the savings, on something that you don't regularly buy or on something where the cost varies. If you always buy the same coffee, lunch...you may notice it but if you go to the pharmacy and buy a whole bunch of stuff and you may not notice it. Well, have any of you felt the reduction? |
I noticed on my Extra Large regular this morning. It was definately a couple of pennies cheaper.
|
Coffee is where I noticed it also. Saved 2 cents! Wheeee!
|
I couldn't tell you all the totals off our books here at the store I work in (yes I am at work), but I did a double take when I saw one this morning. I thought... hey that book is always $16.00 after tax...now it's $15.85.
The world will never be the same. For fear of getting into a discussion, I am wary of this decrease. |
My bowl of Rigatoni and Meatball and a pop at Mamma Martinos usually is $10.06, today, it was just under 10 bucks.
Woo hoo. |

I suppose I'm saving a few cent's here and there, but I sure don't notice it. |
Well, in my town, Tim Hortons coffee changes price every day. And I'm not kidding.
|
I haven't really noticed.
I would imagine people buying big ticket items like cars will appreciate the savings, however small. |
I've really only noticed in my mental calculations...
my mind is still thinking 7%, so my totals are always high.. (always bring out too much change now:) |

Maybe we are not talking about the same size. The one that I am talking about is something like 1.19 before tax. |
I think that 1% savings is pretty iffy. Id rather pay the 1% and have my taxes off my paycheck brought down a little

What if you don't pay income taxes becuase you don't earn enough money. (yes, this it is my fault for opening up the discussion. let's try to keep it from getting political) |
Yeah... that reduction is nice, however check your cheque stubs, because our "saviour" Mr. Harper has gone ahead and quietly increased the federal income tax... (or so I've read and been told... somehow, that didn't make the press release)

I haven't noticed it yet... forgot it was even happening.
Maybe I just need to buy some coffee and stop making my own. |
Ive havent noticed it yet.
I at first thought of it as insignificant. I remember before it took place people were talking about how the first day will be crazy at stores. people waiting to buy a new big screen until the reduction took place. I don't know if there really was people waiting or not, on a thousand dollar tv, you now save $10! ;) but I guess ill be saving a couple hundred total in a year... |
I haven't noticed yet..still paying 50 bucks a week for gas

Brooks, actually... The extra large cafe mocha I get everyday is always between 2.12 and 2.25, no explanation why it keeps changing... |
I've only noticed, because now when I go to Tim's and get my usual, I get a penny or 2 back.

There goes my GST savings. |
Oh good! Another discussion on taxes...
To be honest, I can't say I've noticed. But when it comes time to buy a new car, it will be a little treat. |
Old discussion just brining up how the Tim's took back the benefit that I was getting from the GST reduction. They took it back and took more.
|
I notice it every time I mentally calculate prices with tax and realize I am a bit off.
|
I notice because adding the taxes together to get the 15% gratuity is no longer appropriate when at a restuarant. I end up over tipping, because I realize that it is less than 15%, and throw in a little extra...
** i hate tipping.... it's a money thing, not a philosophical stance. |
I elected a Conservative government, and all I got was one red cent.
Leto, taking the pre-tax amount and dividing by 6 gives a quick way to generate a 16.66666...% tip. |
You're assuming we can divide by six...
|
yeah, the lack of simple tipping isn't worth the 1% i'm saving. either change the tax to something that goes into 15% more easily (may i recommend a federal tax of 1.5%, and no more pst?) or have 14% gratuity be considered the new norm. oh, better yet, combine those. 1.4% total tax, and 14% gratuity. or how about there no longer being an expected amount for tipping? i tip what i feel like, depending on what service i've been given for the tip. my cab driver was pissed off when i gave $20 for an $18 fare. more than 10%, after he had stayed in the warm cab while i loaded my groceries into the trunk. and don't tell me "15% gratuity" added in advance, my tip is how i compliment or berate my server. served me a meal with no problems? 15%. screwed up a drink order? 10-15%. met me in bathroom for a quickie to make up for it? 50%. there's no strict guide, but you get it.
oh...and yeah, that tax. no, actually, i'm not really feeling the difference... |
People who don't try to learn mathematics are not my concern. :)
People who are mathematically crippled and unable to learn basic cyphering can buy a 2$ calculator. I'll even set up a charity. |
haha... The math doesn't bug me. I can deal with it. I just don't like the whole concept of "expected" gratuity. Even yesterday, after dishing out $76 on a meal (Memories of Japan) for the family, and the service being typically mediocre (don't get me going about the busboy vacuuming the dining room with a shop vac while we were eating!!!!) I had to ante up a tip. Why? because it's expected. And people say that if you can't afford to eat out, then don't do it. Well, I can afford the occasional dinner out, but the 20 dollar difference between Swiss Chalet and Memories of Japan??? I would rather tip the Swiss Chalet server 25% for the harder effort, rather than cringe at the thought of adding another 15% to a 76$ bill.
ya ya, I'm a tight-wad. so what. And I don't really notice the 1% decrease in GST other than that. |
Now that 'mathematically crippled' statement wasn't a shot at me because of my casual post, was it Yakk? Either take it back, or cough up that $2. =)
|
The charity is called "the humane society". If you lack the mathematical ability, and the inclination to buy a calculator, we put you to sleep painlessly.
;) |
meh - screwed either way. Decrease the GST, raise the Income Tax when nobody is looking... *sigh*
And people wonder why I run an educational company where we make people read: 10 things that Revenue Canada doesn't want you to know. (yes, I know they're the CRA now, but I guess the title just sounds better that way) Taxes are optional, if you know your way around them :). Me? - I just bought a luxury car, so woo-hoo to the 1% savings. But since I also bought a hybrid, they gave me a discount on the PST as well. Gotta love saving money, even more so on saving taxes. |
