vancouverans... vancouverites... whoever you are!
Hi all,
I'm a displaced American spending the summer in Vancouver (my gf has been up here since January at Vancouver Film School). I'm looking for recommendations from locals on things to do/avoid in the city this summer. I live on Commercial Drive (or "the drive" as I've been told its called) in Eastern Vancouver; I don't have a car but I do have a bus pass! Anyway, just giving a friendly hello to any TFPers that might be in this area and want a share a little inside info with me about their fair city. -Zach |
goto the bar & watch your Canes win the Stanley Cup!
|
Go to the coffee shops on the drive and watch the world cup. Ask some people there what you should do and you'll get more than enough ideas.
Eat sushi. |
Speaking as a Torontonian...
climb the hills look at the ocean go salmon fishing go sea kayaking wear lots of polar fleece wear birkenstocks with socks boast about how great it is to all your friends out east  |
goto the bar & watch
There, fixed |
lol to all the hockey comments. Unfortunately I'm not a hockey fan, we've been at a bar with one of the games on and my head has been squarely pointed at the tv showing baseball or world cup highlights rather than the 25+ hockey ones. Feel free to classify me in the dumb, ignorant American category, but hey, I grew up in the south, hockey is about as foreign as it gets!
We've got a camping/hiking trip idea in the works so I'm hoping that will go over well. I know the city is very "outdoorsy" but the socks with sandals and shorts still makes me cringe everytime I see it. splck: The sushi here is great, been to a few places already! |
Get downtown and do some of the touristy stuff.
Go hike through Stanley Park. Take pictures to send to people from Prospect Point. Enjoy the beaches when it gets warm. Go to the public markets. Enjoy some Granville Island Honey Lager. Go out to UBC and wander around the campus--you'll recognize a lot of the buildings and you won't know why at first (TV/movies uses UBC as a location a LOT--especially Stargate: SG-1). Go browse the stores down in Kits. Take the Seabus. Enjoy a burger and shake at White Spot. |
Find Fresgos and have a big-assed submarine sandwhich. mmmmmm.
I wonder if Fresgos is still there? |

After the big-assed submarine sandwhich, have a piece of their cheesecake...if you have room. Another place to try is Won More Szechuan on the corner of Davie and Denman. Get their pork lettuce wrap, you'll love it. |

Unless for some reason they have their tv's tuned to NHL Classic. :) |
Fresgo's mushroom burgers are mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. On topic, there's tons of cool concerts coming up, you should be able to find something no matter what your tastes in music are :)

oh ya on topic... go check out some of the natural tourist spots: Lynn Canyon nature walk and suspension bridge ( http://www.findfamilyfun.com/lynncanyon.htm ) or the bigger Capilano suspension bridge ( http://www.bcpassport.com/itineraries/four_canyons.html ) Or the Salmon hatchery there. Take the cable car up Grouse Moutain for a view. ( http://www.grousemountain.com/ ) Go see Chinatown. go to Queen Elizabeth Park ( http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/park...ueenelizabeth/ ) And.. if you want want to see naked , aging hippies playing volleyball, go down to Wreck beach ( http://www.wreckbeach.org/ ) for your typical nede beach (typical!! hah!) experience. But on the way check out the UBC campus, and the Museum of Anthropology which is just at the top of the cliff overlooking thebeach... ( http://www.moa.ubc.ca/ ) |
