Need ideas, Grande Prairie area

Well, I'm being sent down for my apprenticeship in Grande Prairie. I recieved my dorm info today and found out that, not only is it costing me a king's ransom, there are nine days at the start of my term where there is no room for me!

There is only one hotel in Grande Prairie with rooms and it's $214 a night, and I cannot sleep in my truck because the ice road from Yellowknife is out, forcing me to fly. The only other idea I had, looking up Bed and Breakfasts, came up dry.

Any ideas? I'll take anything at this point

What is happening that all the hotels are booked? I lived in GP for a while and that sounds crazy. Are you already waiting to get into a college dorm? It's coming up to the end of semester so they should have space.

Weyerhauser is on meltdown, so every hotel in town is stuffed. Yeah I get a dorm on the 1st, but that still means 9 days I have to find something for.

it might be a long shot - but what about a roommate finder...

google brought up this..
http://www.roommateclick.com/index.a...country=canada

I don't see exact dates, but you could probably get a place for a month...

Does the school have any suggestions for you?

Thats actually a pretty cool page. Signed up and..... Gotta pay to see or contact anyone. meh. May have to do that though, thanks for that one.

The school has no ideas at all. They suggested driving down early, so I can sleep in my truck. But the ice road is officially out, so flying is the only way.

Thanks to that idea I found a free one, http://ca.roommates.com/. Signed up, sent out two emails. Both of them were advertising for full time roomies but hopefully one will accept. Man I feel creepy now, lol, asking strangers for room and board.

Could you find a renting apartment in the local classifieds, and try to come to a short term arrangement with the landlord?

Well I ended up getting really desperate, and then ended up asking some current students for advice. They knew of someone who dropped out last week, and gave the name to the school administration, who then turned around and gave the dorm to me. It was all really fluke, but I'll take a bucketload of fluke on this one.

Thanks for the ideas guys, given another day or two I think I would have gotten something. I appreciate it!!

Hey,

I'v worked for Western Budget Motel before, not in GP but at their Leduc #1 location.

Overall, great place to stay and reasonable weekly rates but make sure you get a kitchenette suite.

So here we are again. Back to school in a week in Grande Prairie and this time the school decided to up the ante. The dorm I was slated to live in, I just found out, won't actually be done construction until November 15thish. All hotels are full. All people renting apartments are either full or will not consider someone in town for 6 weeks tops.

What the hell is up with that town???? I swear the Gods of Grande Prairie hate me.

You're not the only one. My time up that way was a pain. We ended up staying in Beverlodge and driving in everyday. It was still expensive, but cheaper than anything in town. (that was 12 years ago).

Good luck with the apprenticeship.

I could give you the number to my boss' place... she usually takes in people when the hotels are full.
