Canada Re-afirms Afganistan Commitment - Tims To Open in Kandahar - Coincidence?

Canada Re-afirms their military commitment to Afganistan.

Read the following article and tell me if this may have made teh discussion much easier.

HAMILTON -- The slogan, "You've always got time for Tim Hortons,'' now applies to even the soldiers in Afghanistan.

After weeks of persistent requests, Canadian soldiers got good news Tuesday with the announcement that a Tim Hortons store will open soon in Kandahar.

Requests from soldiers were relayed to Gen. Rick Hillier, chief of defence staff, who eventually got the message passed to the company and to Ron Joyce, who co-founded the famous chain in Hamilton in 1964 with NHL hockey player Tim Horton.

No timeline has been set but Joyce, who retired and sold his share of the company years ago, says he's been told it will happen "shortly.''

"They are doing it,'' Joyce told the Hamilton Spectator. "The management team in Oakville, Ont., has got it in hand and it's going to happen. They've just got to get the pieces together.''

The store is expected to be housed inside a trailer with takeout windows, and deliveries will be made to the Canadian base in Kandahar by military transport. Staffing plans are yet to be determined.

Retired Maj-Gen. Cam Ross said opening the Tim Hortons isn't trivial and it should boost troops' spirits.

"I can definitely tell you Tim Hortons does influence positively (on the) morale of deployed troops,'' he said. "It connects with Canada. How much more Canadian can you get than roll up the rim or Tim Hortons?'' he said adding, "and I don't get paid by Tim Hortons ... for saying so.''

Ross said he spent two years in the Middle East as a UN force commander and he himself used Tim Hortons products to make people feel at home.

"I did a lot of entertaining in my home (with my wife) in Damascus and guess what, we served Tim Hortons coffee, which was available to us to purchase through the Canadian contingent,'' he said.

"Whether there's an actual Tim Hortons (store) or not, it does allow us to identify with home.''

He said the coffee stand will be very handy during late night or early morning patrols and when troops need something to remind them of home.

"Let's paint a scenario of a patrol going out of Kandahar. It could be 2 a.m. ... and this would be several hours before deploying. Quite conceivably they would attend ... with a coffee in hand because it is ... semi-informal, and what people do at 2 a.m. is drink coffee,'' he said.

"There's normally a bit of a pause before you go out the gate and that's your last chance to smoke a cigarette or get a coffee, and that's likely to be a Tim Hortons,'' he said.

"And when you come back through the gate, clean your weapons and wind down, one thing that they would really cherish would be a good cup of coffee.''

Coincidence? I think not.

Kandahar is just liek downtown Toronto now.

Fuck, there goes my strategy for saving money when I am in Afghanistan. I will owe Tim's a couple of paychecks.

You know how busy that place is going to be?

You put a coffee and an apple fritter in my hand before a patrol, I will perform an indecent sexual act upon you. What a wonderful morale boost!

Shit, there will be a line up a block long, 24 hours a day.

They would have to get the food services guys working there. Maybe the Canteen guys. You sure the fuck aren't going to send a Tim's employee to Kandahar.

Although looking at a cute little civvie bending over to get the choclate glaze timbits on the bottom rack would be allllll right.

How much you think that franchise would go for?

Since it will need to be run by the Army, do you think Tim's would just set up a "Pretend" Tim Hortons store (complete with the uniforms, cups, machines, product and the overhead ordering signs)?

I think the PR alone would cause me, as Tim's CEO to give that shit to the Army, in exchange for free advertising. I would get a little "Speaker's Corner" thing outside the store in Kandahar, and then have the boys (and girls) send their kisses to their family online. Win-WIN.

And Charlatan, You would be the first on my list for potential employees. The casting couch is not easy, but I would make it a special experience for you...

God damn I love the soft spread of Canadian culture. It's not shoved down anybody's throat. It's requested and provided. Everybody wants it, from Olympic apparel, to Coffee Crisps to Tim Horton's.

I can already see the commercials:
"I killed 5 Taliban soldier remnants, AND THEN I ATE THE BOWWWLLL!!" (if anyone remembers that old commercial)

Just do everyone a favour - if you're going through the drive through, don't make it a damn complicated order like "Oh, I'll have a cafe latte mochachino expresso with lactose free milk, a 12 grain bagel with a freshly laid egg (oh, it's OK, I'll just wait here in my car until the chicken is finished), and a land mine to go.

Just grab a coffee and doughnut and go, don't hold everyone else up!

If you had a complicated order, you would probably get a prison beat-down. I am not kidding.

A big order? Like you are getting coffee for the platoon? You better stand in a different line.

Imagine, the only Tim's on earth where there is a clearing bay outside and EVERYONE is packing heat.

Now why can't we get Tim's down here...there are some in the US back East, but they need them in Oregon. I would KILL for a place with a drive-thru where I could get a large double-double and some Timbits.

Shit, I'd even settle for a Krispy Kreme.
