the only thing i ever use a scale for - in fact -- about the only time i ever measure anything - is when baking -- especially baking bread...

I had a very old balance scale that used weights for balance.. and it was accurate, but not all that efficient, because you'd have to weigh the dish you were putting the flour into first.. the add in the flour... (if i wasnt paying attention, i'd often oops)

I now have a Salter digital scale, that's honestly bigger than I need - it's accurate.. but it's overkill... All I want to know is how much a pound of flour is on any given day.(Maybe I should just buy flour in one pound bags.

I got used to using one for cooking/baking while living in Germany, recipes are more mass-based than volume-based. which, makes more sense.
I continue to believe that is the best way to do it, particularly with baking, which is all about chemical reactions.

Scales are also very handy for portion control, for those who are into that sort of thing.

I got used to having one, now that i'm back in the states and newly in my own apartment, it's on my list of things to get soon.

I use a cheap electric postal scale I purchased at walmart, it does standard and metric measurements. I think I payed less than 10 dollars for it quite a good deal. But as said above, I use it for baking.
