Guyanese Peppers...
Has anyone ever come across Guyanese peppers outside of that country? I've been searching everywhere to try and find some of these little buggers. They're small and roundish, usually the size of a blueberry. Dark red in color when ripe. As far as I know, there's no name for these little guys. The Guyanese native that gave me some a year ago just called them "Guyanese peppers". They're very similar to a Scotch Bonnet pepper and might be a Wirri-Wirri pepper, but I can't find a photo. Apparently, they're also very difficult to grow.
These things blow every pepper I've ever tried out of the water. A quarter of the pepper will light your heinie on fire, but the flavor is so smooth in recipes. They make my Chicken Enchilada soup out-of-this-world. Plus, I've got a bet riding on whether or not I can find them. Thanks!

gives a fairly authentic (i guess) recipe for Guyanese Goat curry. It requires wiri-wiri peppers which the author reckons is pretty essential for the genuine flavor. My local chilli seed company doesn't stock them unfortunetly. This website http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/84201/ says you can get them at a place called Reimers (US garden center I think?).

Oohhhh yeah, I remember those! I wasn't brave enough to try them when I was in Guyana but some of my friends did...popped entire peppers in their mouths. Boy were they in a lot of pain!!
I'm not sure where you can get them though....good luck! |
