Has anyone checked out this site?

I found it while trying to find a recipe or at least something with instructions for bread for my bread machine. Unfortunately, I don't have the book that goes with it cause it was lost in the shuffle from my bf's aunt to his mother then to me.

But, I got to looking for it on Yahoo! search engine and found this site. It's so far been a great idea site and has some neat little additions, like the Recipe box and the Shopping list. I love the shopping list cause I won't have to make one and can just print it out!

If anyone else has any sites to recommend, tell me! I just started wanting to learn how to cook better. Or rather I should say that I want to experiment and have found that I love to cook.

Any time I want to make something new I haven't tried before I have two references, allrecipe.com and my bible, The Joy of Cooking. Every recipe in the Joy of Cooking is excelent, and I've never gone wrong with it. Likewise I like allrecipe.com because I'm able to check out the user ratings, and I always go with the highest rated recipe and never had a problem. Here's a short list of recipes I've used from allrecipe.com:

Chicken wings, Barbeque Ribs, New York style Cheesecake, bean salsa, chewy chocolate chip cookies, chicken fingers, tiramisu. I'm certain there's at least a half dozen other recipes I've tried but just don't remember off hand.

I have also used epicurious, and foodtv.com. but I do run to my Joy of cooking a lot.

My girlfriend uses Allrecipes.com quite often, it seems to be a very good site. And of course, I love my Joy of Cooking.

i started replying last nite, and got sidetracked ...

anyways, I know the site, it is pretty good, seems more geared towards easy-to-make, which is not a bad thing.

the best thing I like about it is the recipe scaling and the conversion feature!

/me huggles the metric system.

One cookbook I recommend picking up for the beginning cook (or improving cook) is Better Homes and Gardens' cookbook. It has sections that teach you how to cook basic things several ways so it gives you some building blocks to work with. My BHG cookbook is an awesome resource as it also has picture illustrations of how to do certain things--like make white sauce for instance (everyone should know how to make white sauce) or how choux pastry should look when it comes together.

Armed with that, everything else is easy.

I have a big stack of cookbooks at home that I use all the time... I've also used epicurious and foodtv. I will have to check out All Recipes.

I have this really old cookbook (I think it is Frannie Farmer Cookbook) that has older American receipes in it... odd ones like Squirrel or Possum Pie always make my son gag.

Being that I've been cooking for a while... though.. cooking for a child isn't a hard thing to do. Especially when they're picky and only eat certain things!

But... over time I've gotten extremely bored at trying to be "creative" every day. I decided that I wanted to be able to more than mac & cheese, homemade pizzas, and the like.

That's when I went searching and found Allrecipes. Now, I've made 3 things from their recipes, and let me tell you, my kid is suddenly becoming non-picky!

I will try those other two places as I continue to grow in my experience of cooking. Though I do however recommend the chipped beef from Allrecipes! That made my daughter's morning having it with toast and a over easy egg. And it was simple, easy and quick! I managed to have her a decent breakfast within 10 minutes of prep and cooking time. I only made a 2 serving batch, since that was more than enough for myself and her. But, my bf took a quick bite of mine and now this is going to be a common breakfast or even a anytime snack!

Cooking... I just wish there was a culinary school near me so I could learn alot more harder stuff, or even go all out and become a chef!

I am not a great cook. But the few things I've tried from allrecipes.com have turned out great (with the exception of the horrible cookie incident...ugh!). They are usually pretty easy to make, which is good for me. Just check the user ratings and use one with a high rating.

for professional purposes, I'm a bit of a culinary snob, so I try to stick to larousse gastonomique/escoffier/jacque pepin's la technique for my technical books. I checked out allrecipes.com, though, and for simple stuff it seems to be a decent resource. I'm sure I could plunder a couple good recipes/ideas from there as well.

one thing i've been wondering is does anyone know of a site where i can tell it what i've got available in my kitchen and it can churn out a few things i can make with what i've got? i've seen this feature on drink/cocktail websites. i hardly ever look at recipe books/sites cus i'll just about always not have one or two required ingredients and then its "oh well, that was a nice idea...pasta again." im also a student so having a nicely stocked pantry is just a dream and most of the time there are a few things in my fridge that greet me when i open it.

Allrecipes.com allows you to put in certain types of ingrediants that you are looking for as well as ones that you're not looking for.

I love that site... it's simple and easy for me to use. I just wish I had a computer in the kitchen now!
