Is farmed raised salmon bad for you?
Practically the only salmon I can get here in LA is farm raised with color added. We also order wild salmon from some places in Alaska but the prices are quite exhorbitant.
I am aware that the farm raised salmon are kept in pens, fed chemicals etc. But how good or bad is this type of salmon? Does anybody know anything about this issue? |

become friends with your local sushi chef. you might be able to go through him to get good salmon. lucky for me, I work under a master sushi chef and have those materials readily available to me.

I just heard that it is not really safe to eat *any* fish on a regular basis... Canada Health just issued a warning saying how many days a month it was safe to eat fish.
A very good friend of mine was eating quite a bit of fresh fish in an effort to eat healthy and maximize her intake of Omega3 Fatty Acid... she just found out that she as a high level of mercury in her system... too many fish. We are seriously fucking up our eco-system.

Mobo123, since you are in the LA area, check out Whole Foods Market. Actually, TODAY is the first day that we have this season's run of FRESH Alaskan Copper River King Salmon in the stores. Although I must admit, that the price this year has greatly increased from years past. The fish itself looks absolutely incredible.

Nice to see that you were able to get some wild salmon. You may not get as much fish for your dollar, but the rich taste of a nice organic fish is worth the price.
/real fish don't eat pellets...or food colouring...or antibiotics...or slice

I say you just have to look at where the raised salmon comes from! I have no idea about other countries, but norway has laws against chemicals that change color of meat and fish... and they fall under the animalabuse laws so there are regulations on how to feed them and how much room they have in the pen etc...

That's probably true. but when you figure in the cost of shipping from Norway to Los angeles all the while trying to keep the fish fresh, we're back up to $25-30 lb. |

Right now, stores are getting the first catch of the season. Wait a few weeks and the prices will be down well below $10/lb (to more like 6-7/lb). |
