Fried Oreos

The past year & a half or so, anytime I've gone to an outdoor event such as carnivals, air shows, etc.. there have been booths popping up with some odd fried sweets. First was fried twinkies with strawberry preseves on top, then fried oreos, & recently I saw a booth for fried Milkyways & Snickers. Has anyone heard of any thing else similar?

I've experimented with the oreos, all you need is a deep fryer(or pot)
vegetable oil, oreos, and pancake batter(prepared just i little thicker than normal). just dip the oreos in the batter and fry'em up till golden brown.

The the creme in the oreos stays together, but in the twinkies it dissolves.
I might try the snickers this weekend & give an update on how they turned out.

Freeze the milky way before you deep fry 'em. and a tempura batter works a little better than pancake batter. You actually want the batter very thin, rather than thick. Nigella Lawson had a recipe a few years ago for deep fried Bounty bars that looked like they were to die for... and die from... :D

When you're done, you can listen to your ateries harden.

sounds interesting, but oreos aren't exactly healthy...deep frying them? Sounds way too fatty and I think it would be too rich and in a way, what's the point?

Mbwuto 03-22-2005 05:46 AM

Thank Texas for that. Over the last few years it's become a fad at the State Fair to see just how many things can be fried. This last year the oreo was the big hit, the year before the twinkie.

One can only imagine what they plan to do this year.

Isn't everything better fried?

Says right here in my cookbook, "American Cooking"

Mmmmm Fried everything, the sure fire way to get a heart attack but at least the journey there will taste great. I love american cooking, get something unhealthy or even healthy and make it even more unhealthy.
 Now that's what i call cooking. Then again the English aren't much better Fish and Chips, really what the hell is that all about.

FRIED OREOS? Now I'm a big fella, and I enjoy my food, but damn. Isn't this a little too much? All those Trans and Saturated fats clogging your arteries... Eat a salad! but only after you cook me up a batch :D

thatoneguy 03-23-2005 02:11 PM

Fried Oreos are great, but only for dessert, I like to start my meal with a fried Caesar Salad, followed by some fried soup, then a main course of fried Fettucini Alfredo with some fried Milk to drink. It's the most delicious meal I've ever eaten. I can't really... breathe... so well after I'm done, but man... it's good.

lordpoopshank 03-25-2005 10:55 AM

I might have to try some fried little debbie cakes after reading this.

Grasshopper Green 03-25-2005 04:23 PM

I've heard of the fried twinkie and fried snickers bar, but not the fried oreo. Frankly, I just don't "get it". They all sound absolutely disgusting to me.

I'm going on a trip in a few weeks and we're having a cook off at the end of the night when the director comes through and tries everyone's food, we're frying a salad (if we can get it to work), probably fish, and some kind of dessert. Perhaps we'll drop in an apple for good measure, too.

Oh, and don't forget to add bacon. Deep fried with bacon is to die for ;)

Gatorade Frost 03-26-2005 03:11 PM

Oh god - We were going to fry bacon, too. Last year we joked about it and the guy who judges our food broke down crying he thought it was so funny, all of it was.

It's kinda on par with the "let's dunk everything in chocolate" ... I was getting stuff for an easter basket in my local sweet shop and they had chocolate covered peeps, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered nutter butter cookies -- you name it - -it was dunked in chocolate...

Weird, where do you guys live.
I have heard of fried twinkies and fried ice cream. I would never try it cause it sounds so bad for your health and what happens if I like it I might start eating it. Oil on some thing sweet does not sound so good to me. Oreo's and milk will do just fine.
I like french fry's when they are baked in the oven.

We usually only see these things when the fair comes to town. They also have Fried M&M's which no one else has mentioned yet.

It's funny when I tell people about Fried Oreos and whatnot and they're automatically grossed out. Then I explain to them how they're putting Funnel Cake batter around it and everyone is like "OH! I thought they fried it like chicken!"

yabobo 03-29-2005 06:36 PM

I gotta laugh at all the members who say it's bad for your health.
How long do you want to live? I've got my nitros in front of my beer can.
I take lipator and a blood pressure pill in the morning, and if it gets too bad...Cardilogist makes good money to fix the pipes. So eat what you want.
Enjoy the fair it's only once a year!

Mmmmmmmm...chocolate covered peeps.....yes, people say I'm sick but I just love those silly things. I guess I can sort of understand the frying thing.

^^ Agree. I first saw the fried chocolate bar on my local news and it looked so disgusting. A snickers bar is sweet/fatty enough for me thanks.

frankx 04-03-2005 06:42 PM

Guess they'll just batter and deep fry a goddamn birthday cake or some sugar cubes next.

Hey! Now I have something to do next weekend!!!!!

wolf 04-05-2005 05:02 AM

Well they did perfect the deep fried turkey, so I guess nothing surprises me. Snickers? Wouldn't it melt?

JustJess 04-05-2005 05:38 AM

Normally, I'm a fan of all things fried... but since I'm not much into sweets, this isn't doing it for me either. Fried ice cream is damned yummy, tho.
Of course, if you put it in front of me, I'll prob'ly eat it. :)

..They fry icecream now? ...

maleficent 04-05-2005 05:52 AM

Fried ice cream has been around for a long time Most mexican restaurants have it on their menu,

JustJess 04-05-2005 05:54 AM

Don't forget that a lot of Japanese places do it too - that's where I usually have it. Okay, now I'm a little hungry.

yellowchef 04-05-2005 08:11 AM

Fried candy bars actually started in England/Europe. Theyre FANTASTIC... I dont really like Oreos to begin with.. so fried Oreos could be good but not to me.

Guess I don't get out enough.. I've never heard of such a thing.

maleficent 04-05-2005 08:35 AM

Fried ice cream is actually quite tasty... it's icecream that's super hard to begin with then dumped in a very light batter (usually a tempura like batter) deep fried until lightly browned, and served - -it's in a deep fryer for a few seconds...

It's kinda an ethnic take on a baked alaska...
