Men who do the cooking?

So, I'm just curious, how many of the male TFPers (who aren't single) do the majority of the cooking? I'm one. My wife doesn't like cooking and doesn't think she's good at it. I'm never minded it and like to experiment in the kitchen.

Am I a freak, or are there lots more like me?

Single or not, unless my GF is a culinary goddess I suspect I'll be cooking very often.

fuelmyfire 05-24-2003 09:22 AM

My girlfriend adores cooking. She can make anything (from anything). I always help her and have learned a lot. Cooking with her is one of my favouite things in the world.

Jinger 05-24-2003 02:29 PM

My husband does the majority of the GOOD cooking!!

ghostbuster 05-24-2003 03:09 PM

i dont cook much... but im still in highschool... going to culinary school next year

Tophat665 05-24-2003 04:29 PM

My wife worked in food service for years. She can throw together food for 200 form any of a double dozen excellent recipies. What she doesn't do so well is cook something different for 2 ½ every night, so I made her a deal that I would cook dinner if she would do the dishes. I am very good at making off the wall and off the cuff things. Working pretty well so far. I started listing off a weeks worth of recipies at work, and one of the women I was talking to said, "Oh, you're gettin' some, yes you are." Not yet, but I think I'm putting some on lay away.

I blow my wifes cooking out of the water, but
you know if she would burn a hot dog I would love every bite anyway! We share and it is great1

My ex-wife was only able to handle the big three Helpers - Tuna, Chicken and Hamburger. I tried not to let her in the kitchen much.

I guess I should have expected these poll results, but I didn't. It makes sense, because people who don't cook much wouldn't be interested in this forum. Not exactly a representative sample!

Good to know I'm not a freak though (at least not in this respect).

I do almost all the cooking in my house. My wife is in charge of Turkey. That's it. When we first got together we alternated cooking, but unfortunately for me, she liked what I did more.

Mister Coaster 05-26-2003 07:17 AM

I have a long commute, so she will cook on the weekdays. I usually cook on the weekends. Every once in a while, she'll be too tired to cook and I'll take over.

mtsgsd 05-28-2003 05:25 AM

I like to cook but hate cleaning, She likes to clean but hates cooking! A match made in heaven. Luckily I'm half-way decent at it so we won't starve. :)

sonofleemarvin 05-28-2003 05:24 PM

We both cook, but I like it a lot more than she does, and I tend to branch out a lot more.

Cynthetiq 05-29-2003 12:38 AM

me.... i know how to use spices and sauces...

wife makes bland food.

Macheath 05-29-2003 04:02 AM

We all try to share cooking responsibilities in my family. Recently there's been a lot of stir frys, casseroles and bolognaise sauce. I'm trying to break out at the moment and focus on well cooked steaks, gourmet sausages, baked mains and desserts. Give the oven a bit more of a workout.

absorbentishe 05-30-2003 06:45 AM

My wife can make a mean grilled cheese, or mac and cheese, but other than that, if that I do ALL the cooking. Of course I sometimes need to make 2 batches, one for me (spicy) and a bland one for the wife and kids...

G_Whiz 05-30-2003 02:19 PM

Frankly, I'd probably weigh a whole lot less if my wife did the cooking.

I love good food and I love to cook. My wife loves good food and hates to cook. When we were first married, she cooked and tried the traditional wifely duties. After 5 nights of hamburgers, I took over. Since then, she only does specialty items. Her specialties serve groups of 10 or more.

LutherMac 06-03-2003 07:01 AM

I do almost all the cooking for my family, though that wasn't always the case. Recently though, I've started to really enjoy cooking... and just wish I could afford to get a bit more creative when preparing meals.

HockeyGuy 06-04-2003 05:40 PM

I have no problem with the cooking, and actually enjoy it.

Snead Hearn 06-08-2003 12:50 PM

i think the reason so many guys like to do the cooking is, for years it was a woman's DUTY to cook and guys allways did it for fun. that's why i do the cooking, it's a blast

now the cleaning up... that just plain sucks, but i try to clean as much stuff as i can right after i'm done with it, that way i don't have a giant pile of shit to do after all is done.

ninety09 06-09-2003 11:24 AM

My girlfriend loves it when I cook. I'm not very good, but with some practice I'll improve : P

Xiomar 06-09-2003 05:10 PM

Im tha cook :) just not atm... we split up. However, Im workin on that ;)

Fisher 06-09-2003 08:00 PM

I like to cook, probably because I love to eat! My wife and I share cooking duties. I cook more on weekends because I have a long commute and she likes to eat dinner at 6:00. For me, cooking is a creative outlet, I like to experiment, try new things and cook things I really like. I don't get excited about making meat loaf or pasta with tomato sauce. btw I do a lot of the dish washing too. I rarely do laundry.

Doos 06-12-2003 04:16 AM

I voted because even though I'm am single, I still live with the family. And no I'm not an advanced fridge user ;)

hpduck 06-12-2003 10:41 AM

What'd ya make for dinner honey?-----Reservations dear
When we do cook at home it's fun to try new sauces & salads & such---with shared prep work over a bottle of wine------sometimes the cooks get marinated more than the main dish----but it's a good time to talk & laugh & bump into each other---just wish she'd put the knife down ONCE in ahwile

maddemon802 06-15-2003 02:49 PM

Ever notice that most of the worlds best chefs are men...wonder why that is...really
I don't do most of the cooking (scheduling doesn't allow) But I do everything that isn't standard fare...my wifes cooking is good, but I get tired of HH and shepherds pie...and wan't chicken scallopini :)

Slims 06-16-2003 07:17 PM

The deal my roomate and I have with our girlfriends (at least in theory) is that if we cook, they will wash the dishes.

greytone 06-17-2003 05:18 PM

The greys try, but they tend to slobber on the food and they leave me very little. So yes, I do the cooking.

At holidays, I split the cooking with my mother. I do about 35-40% of the cooking on the holiday itself. I don't help with the prep because I work and she is retired.

Peetster 06-17-2003 05:40 PM

I cook beautiful meals. Some are old classics, some intricate labors of love. I make from scratch. I plate up. I've even won awards. Every weekend I go to the store with no list. I see what looks fresh and good, compose the menus in my head as I shop, then go home with the booty and a plan. All it takes is a willingness to learn and some good cook books to get started. You will be surprised at how quickly you will learn and grow with practice.

During the week my wife reheats my leftovers. ;-)
