What is the most bizzare/unusual food you have had?

Thought this food-related topic might belong here to the Cooking forum.

People eat all kinds of crazy things all around the world.

For me, the most outrageous one would be snakes. Cooked, of course.

What have you tried?

omega2K4 12-15-2004 01:04 AM

Pigsfeet, they're pretty good. Seriously.

pixelbend 12-15-2004 08:59 AM

I have had alligator(in LA) and reindeer (in AK).

Both were pretty good. Alligator was really close to chicken. Reindeer was a lot like venison.

the_marq 12-15-2004 09:21 AM

Oh c'mon Deer and Pigs? Where the hardcore stuff?

I've eaten, rattlesnake, live clams, live spiders and ants (and not just as a kid either), crickets. Not to mention tons and tons of raw fish, but sushi isn't really all that hardcore anymore.

Someone out there has to have eaten some FearFactor shit, let's hear it.

pixelbend 12-15-2004 11:13 AM

ha ha, ok. I ate cat food once. Does that count? :)

Rodney 12-15-2004 12:17 PM

Pickled jellyfish. Once.

Suave 12-15-2004 01:00 PM

Once I ate Spam straight from the can. Never again. I've also eaten live ants (crawled down my throat), and my own skin.

anleja 12-15-2004 06:46 PM

um... I've guzzled half a bottle of lemon juice, does that count?

I was at the store today, and saw they had for sale COW BRAINS.

I suddenly felt like I was living in the dark ages. I used to laugh at the cow tongues, but I wouldn't even look at the cow brains. Too much... uh, simply too much. But hey, I found a cow brain recipe! http://www.realcajunrecipes.com/recipes/799.rcr

CinnamonGirl 12-15-2004 07:04 PM

I had octopus while we were in Lajes. It didn't taste all that bad, but the texture...ugh.

I accidentally ate some rabbit once...which isn't weird in general, but the fact that I had a pet rabbit made me feel sick afterwards.

Grasshopper Green 12-15-2004 07:35 PM

Nothing too weird here, just squid. No way I'd try the fear factor stuff, too weak of a stomach!

Oh, I've seen the canned cow brains and gravy at the store I used to work at...and it actually sold pretty well.

i8one2 12-15-2004 07:36 PM

canned Mayflies with SOJU served to me by a prostitute in Korea back in the 80s.
Disgusting and fowl doesn't begin to explain the smell and flavor of them. But I was willing to try something new...Wrong move.

Yes I was kinda drinking at the time, but the experience is one I will never forget
PS...I don't and will never again put a FLY anywhere near my mouth again.

helpimstuck 12-15-2004 07:44 PM

I found this forum from the referral to my site, realcajunrecipes.com :-D

Cajuns eat weird stuff but I think the Chinese put us to shame. I've eaten Chicken Feet at dim sum many times. It tastes delicious but it looks like bubonic plague-stricken, swollen feet. A former requirement of mine used to be that any girl I'd date would at least have to attempt to eat chicken feet. Two of my ex's tried it and gagged (one had actual vomit come up). My current girlfriend is Chinese and grew up on the stuff :-D

The Prophet 12-15-2004 07:55 PM

Anyone ever eat mountain oysters? I have the nut sacks of two sheep we recently butchered, out in the barn. I plan to tan the sacks and turn into medicine bags, but the nuts are still in them. I won't eat them, but some people will.

If you want to give them a go, I could send them UPS, or next day air.

Shirtninja 12-15-2004 08:37 PM

Rattle snake and crickets.

Welcome! Hope you can contribute more in the future. :D

I have had octopus and chicken feet/pig feet too. Those are pretty \"normal\". Have also tried: cow\'s stomach, pig\'s kidney/ear/tongue.

Don\'t feel bad; I\'ve had them too. I am sure the one you had is not someone\'s pet. :)

Now something that makes me feel a bit bad as food: pigeon. Sorry.

pixelbend 12-16-2004 05:12 AM

My wife's grandmother makes brains and eggs every year for Christmas. they are pig's brains though and I've never had the stomach to try them.

Charlatan 12-16-2004 06:29 AM

Sea Slug is probably the most odd...

A little rubbery but not bad (and doesn't taste like chicken).

fatbob 12-16-2004 06:41 AM

hey i eat haggis a fair amount...

however, the worst thing i have ever eaten was fish eyes...nato that is pretty horrible looking but tastes lovely!

Cynthetiq 12-16-2004 12:42 PM

balut.

duck fetus in a boiled egg. feathers, beak, feet, yolk sack.

disgusting.

Yep. That is disgusting.

1slOwCD8 12-16-2004 01:17 PM

My parents actually enjoy balut very much. Being asian, ive eaten a lot of stuff that arent really normal, not really hardcore like bugs but wierd. For example chicken/pig feet, cow tongue(i ate it without knowing what it was), and cow legs or something like that, im not sure what it is off the top of my head. Its funny cause that stuff was on like fear factor or something, and people were choking all of it, so i was laughing. I guess its mostly how you cook it. I dont eat that much wierd stuff, by my parents eat a lot more wierd food. I think theres a saying like "we eat anything with 4 legs, just not tables or chairs."

splck 12-16-2004 03:10 PM

I've eaten a Big Mac....now that is disgusting!!

a-j 12-16-2004 03:48 PM

For me the wierdest thing would probably a whole banana, peel and all. It's not really that disgusting, but more odd. It was on a dare and I made $10 :hmm:

itch vaccine 12-17-2004 04:14 AM

I'm a Chinese

Frog.
Pig liver / blood cubes (they made it into solids) / stomach / intestines.
Chicken liver / gizard / heart.
Beef stomach.

and I go dining once in a while

so I've tried

Black noodles (noodles in Squid Ink).
Goose liver.

I loved all of em :)

sapphire 12-17-2004 10:30 AM

When I was in Kenya we went to a restaurant called the carnivore where they let you sample all kinds of meats. I had crocodile, zebra, and eland. It was very weird but it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

helpimstuck 12-17-2004 11:44 PM

Ohh I just remebered. "Blood Pudding". It's blood thats been boiled down all day long. It tastes like.. horrible.. concentrated blood.

snowy 12-17-2004 11:55 PM

One of my favorite things to eat is eel. It's not really weird. But people don't believe me when I tell them it's really tasty. I just love eel.

SiN 12-19-2004 11:39 AM

this thread makes me glad I'm a vegetarian ;)

as a child, probably the strangest thing, and not even really that odd, is my grandma's turtle soup. yummy stuff, it was.

fatbob 12-20-2004 05:15 AM

blood pudding is similar to black pudding i guess.
tasty stuff especially with your fry-up, nothing like it to cure a hangover! 'cos if you can keep it down you know you are going to be ok!

Ripsaw 12-20-2004 08:13 AM

Last night I was served three sea cucumbers on a plate. Whole. I think they were braised, but I expected them to start moving. Charlatan is correct. That don't taste like chicken.

My Dad's favourite thing to say in a restaurant was, "Bring me some turtle soup, and make it snappy."

I, sadly for my children, carry on with tradition...

maleficent 12-20-2004 01:27 PM

I'll try most anything.... once... some things I've gone back for more than once.

Raw Sea urchin - probably one of my most favorite things in the sushi menu.
Any form of sushi, except octopus or salmon.
The food court at IKEA has Reindeer and all sorts of other scandanavian foods, quite tasty. (and I get perverse pleasure from humming Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer while getting that food :)
Kangaroo (very very rich tasting - not sure I'd have it again... but it wasn't awful)
I'm pretty sure I've had dog at various vietnamese restaurants
Aligator - tastes sort of like calamari...
Tripe (stomach) isn't bad when cooked properly
Sweetbreads (the thalmus gland of a cow?) also not bad if cooked properly
Foie Gras -- Fatted goose liver -- absolute heaven.

I agree with onesnowyowl - I love eel - not only the kind in sushi, but in some frecn restauants yo ucan find Anguilles en Sauce Verte - which are wonderful...

splck 12-20-2004 03:24 PM

Yum...Eel. sea urchin(uni), sweet shrimp, salmon eggs, (any sushi for that matter, although it's kinda mainstream nowadays).
Foie Gras with truffle = yummy
Fish eyes...poached..they were ok..like a big caviar.
Tripe...like maleficent said..not bad when done proprely.
Chicken feet... I love Dim Sum
Smoked shark...a bit oily, but not too bad.
Chocolate covered ants...a bit of a gimmick, but not that bad...sweet almost.
Moose and deer hearts and livers...very tasty.

Church 12-20-2004 05:29 PM

I think for me it would have to be a flower salad. I'm not sure exactly what was in it, but apparently it had dandelion leaves, tulips, and some other crazy stuff in it. It didn't taste that bad, but its not something I'd eat again.

wolf 12-20-2004 05:57 PM

OK sweetbreads are brains guys. They are big in Mediterranian cooking.

I tried Durian fruit once, any one ever have it? Tastes like sweet fruit, but smells like rotting flesh. Seriously.

maleficent 12-20-2004 06:09 PM

I think perhaps the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten is Gefilte fish, which in theory are just fish cakes made with ground fish, matzo meal, and eggs, cooked in fish broth, served with lots and lots of horseradish to deaden teh taste... but they form this gelateous mess on the outside and get all slimey and well - the texture is just gross.

hokiesandwich 12-20-2004 09:24 PM

Living in Japan is a one-way ticket to Fear Factor-type food. If it walks, crawls, or smells a lot like biological waste or old underwear, they eat and serve it. Such meticulous cooks though...and knife skills to beat the world.

On second thought, the Chinese eat absolutely anything, and they breed all those little animals that host and transmit deadly viruses so well...

Not sure which kind of eel you're talking about, but in Spain they served us an appetizer that looked like spaghetti...but each one had two black dots. Turned out to be baby eels...and I loved them.

Also tried alligator, tiger, bear, pig's stomach and snake, but you guys beat me to them :)

Pyke 12-24-2004 10:19 PM

Rattlesnake, stir-fried Emu, and Bullfrog legs all on one plate.
Few of the neighbours throw a "Wild Feast" and try and find the most outlandish foods out there. Fun times.
