Dunno, never been to anyone of them :D i don't particularly like "expensive" food. sometimes a nice cheap pizza is better than anything else in the world. well probably would like to try any of these places once in my life time :rolleyes:

I've never even been to any of those cities let alone the resturants! One of my favorities here at home is the Daily Planet, Fresno CA. Ask to sit in the back and the ambiance is great. For cheap food I love a cheap burrito from one of the many little burrito places around here.

That whole list seems a like it has a bit of a western slant, but maybe that's just because I think that most food west of the middle east (with a few exceptions) isn't worth eating. At the very least I would have expected more restaurants with names implying that they served asian food.

For probably the best food (and definitely the best chinese food) I've had I would have to say the Szechwan Wok in Silverton (suburb of Cincinnati), Ohio. It's kind of a hole in the wall type of place, but the food is the best that I've every found, and I've eaten alot of chinese in alot of parts of the world. If you're ever in the area stop in and try it; start with the pot stickers :) The owners said they would probably be closing and retiring in the next couple of years, but they've said that if I'm really interested I can spend a couple of days with the chef in the kitchen right before they do, so you may see some of their recipes popping up on here...

The restaurants in NY I would probably agree with, although I'd put Jean Georges far above Grammercy Tavern (though it's horribly expensive). And charlie Trotters best restuarant in Chicago? I so don't think so... I wouldn't even put it in the top 10 in Chicago...

I've heard a lot of good things about French Laundry but never been there.

What standard are they using for judging these restaurants.

I've been to these and by far the most memorable for me was the Gramercy Tavern in New York City. I loved this place but that's probably got as much to do with the company that particular evening (and maybe more the after prom - if ya get my drift) than for the actual meal.

Outside of that the only other place that stands out is The Cliff in Barbados but that's because of the ambiance/atmosphere. It's right on the water and I had the best surf & turf combo. I think the fish was grouper and the beef was two fold: an 8 oz filet mignon and a single braised short rib. Absolutely fabulous!

The others were all good but in the grand scheme of things -- as the original poster mentioned perhaps a pizza is just as good depending on circumstance and company.

you mean the Olive Garden didn't make the list? It's a traveshamockery!

I personally go by Michelin Stars (at least in Europe), as good indicators. Of course, the only problem with that is they tend to have a western and French cuisine bias. :-)

By the way, two months booking for the French Laundry?! Yikes.

I've been to Tetsuya's and Rockpool in Sydney. Tetsuya's is sublime and extremely expensive, but I don't really like sea-food, so this kinda ruined it for me. Rockpool is very nice, very expensive and very good. Excellent service.

been to bukhara in new delhi -- it's super food, but "best asian restaurant" ? I doubt it. You can find much better food/atmosphere in Delhi itself, and that's just one city in one country in Asia.

Btw, IMO Bukhara is in a whole different league compared to Spago, LA in what really counts -- the food. Not sure how they come up with ratings and how skewed things are towards ambience and the snoot factor.

also been to l'atelier in paris (which is in the top 10), and it's snooty and very chic -- food's great (i had steak tartare which was excellent), but again imo bukhara's better.
