1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 medium onion, chopped

2 1/2 cups cooked shredded chicken breast meat

1 can (7 oz.) ORTEGA Diced Green Chiles

1 package (1.25 oz.) ORTEGA Taco Seasoning Mix - Regular

8 corn tortillas

1 can (15 oz.) kidney beans, drained

2 cups (8 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese, divided

1 jar pound ORTEGA Salsa - Homestyle Recipe (Mild)

PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Grease 13x9x2-inch baking dish.

HEAT oil in large skillet. Cook onion, stirring occasionally, until tender. Remove from heat. Stir in chicken, chiles and seasoning mix.

LAYER half of tortillas in prepared baking dish. Top with chicken mixture, beans and 1 cup cheese. Layer with remaining tortillas. Top with salsa and remaining cheese.

BAKE for 30 to 35 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted.

I want to know what it means when it says to "layer the tortillas". Is it pretty much just laying them down overlapping a little bit?

Also it calls for "cooked and shredded chicken" , how do I go about doing this? Do you cook chicken the same way you cook groud meat? Or can I microwave it? And to shed it can I just use a cheese grater?

I have no professional training in cooking ... thanks for the help

layer the tortillas:

it looks like they want you to basically do this in levels. first level, tortillas. second level, chicken/bean goop. third level, more tortillas. fourth level, salsa and cheese. it looks like a busted kind of mexican lasagne. think of it that way.

cooked and shredded:

grab some breasts, thighs, or whatever other meat you want and cook it like you normally do. i'd grill it, personally. when the meat is done, it should be tender enough to tear apart with a couple of forks, giving you the shredded part. discard the fat/gristle/bones.

yes overlap the tortillas, imagine you had some playing cards and you wanted to cover an area, does not need to be perfect, but you also do not want a stack of 5 tortillas on top of eachother.
