Onion "Meat"Loaf Slices in Catsup Gravy - vegan

Onion "Meat"Loaf Slices in Catsup Gravy

Ingredients
1 c. oatmeal (coarse grind is best)
1 c. TVP (granular)
1/2 c. whole wheat flour
1/2 c. minced celery
1/2 c. minced parsley
whatever other herbs you like
1 packet "Lipton Recipe Secrets Beefy Onion" mix (has virtually no fat and no meat)
1/2 c. catsup
enough water to make a slightly-softer-than-meatloaf mixture

Preparation
Mix all together in a bowl and let stand for 1/2 hour in the refrigerator (the dried ingredients will absorb the water and the flavors will meld).

Add more water if necessary to make a meatloaf-like texture. Turn mixture into a Pam-ed loaf pan and top with more catsup. Bake for 1 hour at 375.

When you take it out of the oven, allow it to cool completely (in the refrigerator). If you cut it hot, it will crumble. Then slice it and warm the slices up in a sauce made from 1 part catsup and 2 parts water.

Serve with mashed potatoes for the ultimate comfort-food meal.

I've done similar recipes when I was a vegetarian... I actually have some TVP in my kitchen now and was thinking of what to do with it, and I found this recipe and decided to post it just in case someone also had some TVP lying around... I might just make this soon. I think it actually would be quite good.

and beefy onion means it has flavorings to make it taste like beef... but no actual beef.

cynthetiq: texturized vegetable protein. It's the generic substitute for ground meat. Here's my assessment:

Color: brownish
Size: about right!
Texture: chewy (which, for vegetarians, is hard to find)
Residue: Due to it being a 100% soy product, the tongue does not become bathed in any kind of velvety fat.
Taste: ABSOLETLY 0! However, there does exist flavored TVPs which purport to be just like chicken or beef. Mostly these taste like old soy sauce.

That being said, it's nice to eat something chewy when you're vegetarian. but you have to mix it up with a lot of flavorful stuff to get any real enjoyment out of it.

also: is no one else disturbed by the phrase "beefy onion"? It sounds like some horrible growth on the male anatomy.

It does take on the flavor of whatever you cook it with.
I've made some incredible things with it back when I used to cook all the time.

You can find it in any health food store, usually in their bulk foods section.
