anyone else think kahlua is gross?

I've moved into a new apartment (no roomates, woohoo!) and my rich aunt gave me a left over (cheap) espresso machine for free. .. When I stocked my fridge to be prepared to play bartender, I bought a bottle of Vanilla Stoli and a bottle of Kahlua. I'm a relatively new drinker - I've never dried Kahlua before. I figured I'd try to make a few mixed drinks.

I tried a black russian - 1 shot stoli and half a shot kahlua. It was gross. I added coke and it got a lot better. I tried another one without the kahlua and it was even better ; ) .. Coke + Vanilla Stoli = the real vanilla coke.

I tried making some drinks with kahlua and espresso too, and I didn't like anything that I made.. kahlua seems to have this gross bitter taste to it. It's fine when the liquid is in the front of my mouth, but when it hits the tastebuds in the back... eeccckkk. Am I doing something wrong or am I just an uncultured swine? Would it get better if I added some half and half? (I don't have this yet, I just moved in.. I'm so embarassed.)

My apologies if this isn't on topic in the cooking forum, but it seemed like the best fit.

I would simply chalk it up to personal taste. I personally love White and Black Russians, best is with Absolute Vanilla (80proof vs. 70proof like other vanilla vodkas, but its super smooth) and Kahlua Especial (70 proof Kahlua from Arabica Coffee beans)

so good!

Black Russians are great. Add only enough Kahlua so it tastes good to you. I like about 1/3 Kahlua and 2/3 vodka. I've never tried vanilla vodka, so I can't comment on that.

Try a B52. 1 part Kahlua, 1 part Baileys, 1 part Grand Marnier. Pour into a shot glass and knock it back.
This might change your opinion of Kahlua.

I like Kahlua, but prefer Tia Maria, which is a little less sweet and has more coffee bitter to it. If you think Kahlua is bitter, forget it, though.

I'm surprised you like expresso, but dislike Kahlua.

SexyCat 01-27-2004 09:20 AM

Kahlua is not tasty to me either.

SiN 01-27-2004 09:51 AM

Kahlua is my favorite :D

no.

a friend of mine from the dominican republic used to make an energy drink from blending
ice
milk
sugar
oatmeal

it was kinda nasty at first, but once you get past the "im not used ot drinking this texture" its really good.

i eventually added kahula to it and a little less sugar...man that stuff is good.

aphex140 01-29-2004 01:42 AM

Kahlua oh yes

A fav shooter of mind a B52.

1/3 Baily liquer
1/3 kahlua
1/3 Gran Marnier

Oh the drunkness, as I do not have Caffine ( very oft) the Kahulas caffine in take help me stay awake - awake , but drunk.

It is all in the mix

:D

colorado bulldog?, I thought that was a smith and wesson. still close to a white russian, with a splash of coke though.

I learn something new on this site everyday.

micah67 01-29-2004 01:05 PM

Very close. A Smith and Wesson is made with light cream instead of milk and Pepsi instead of Coke (I know...BFD)

nope. espeically when you have a duck fart- kaluah, irish creme, and whiskey. YUM!

nreece 01-30-2004 01:47 PM

I had a bad experience with Kahlua once. But I don't think its neccesarily (SP?) bad.

Jay Francis 01-31-2004 06:38 AM

Kahlua is just simple sugar syrup, vodka, and coffee. Since the caffeine would keep me up at night, I make my own with decaffeinated espresso, made real strong with a Vietnamese drip filter. I would prefer however, to just have a strong cup of coffee with some vodka in it.

Some of my friends really like The Mudslide which is equal parts Irish Cream, vodka, and Kahlua.

Here is something better. Hot chocolate made with Abuelita brand Mexican chocolate and half and half. Serve hot and top off with a shot of vodka or Kahlua.

I can't hate Kaluha, it's the main ingredient in a Caucasian.

soccerchamp76 02-01-2004 09:15 PM

I agree, it is a little too bitter for my tastes.

ladyadmin 02-08-2004 12:28 AM

Kahlua and Baileys is my personal preference. Coffee tastes better with a shot or two of Baileys; milk tastes similar to chocolate milk if you add Kahlua.

ktthequeen 02-08-2004 12:00 PM

nope. i hate it, too.

no matter the mix, it's nasty
