TFPers' Favorite Brew Styles (Poll)

Alright all you beer drinkers.

What's your favorite brew style?

Let me know if you want an option added. Oh yeah, I voted for "stout".

World's King 04-28-2003 12:14 AM

Guinness...

Enough said.

riskybiz 04-28-2003 02:08 AM

I'll choose a pale ale if I plan to have a few and a stout if I plan to have only one. I love Guiness but can't drink it in quantity.

I've met very few beers in life that I didn't enjoy.

forgotten_dream 04-28-2003 03:12 AM

Prefer? Good ol german beer.
Afford? Nat-Lite. >_<

Zotz 04-28-2003 06:19 AM

I'm with the King on this one.....Guinness stout

Lager lout is what I am

shalafi 04-28-2003 07:24 AM

depends on my mood. Ive been drinking yeungling alot lately if they have it at the bar. I think thats a lager but not certain. there used to be this great bar in orlando called hobbs where they had 100 beers on tap and another 200 or 300 bottles. it was a beer drinkers paradise but they closed down before i moved away. i used to go in there every once in a while and order a bud light just cause it pissed off the bartender

Troublebot 04-28-2003 07:26 AM

I like the wheat. There's an excellent wheat brewed in Kansas City that I down copious amounts of whenever possible.

Daval 04-28-2003 09:44 AM

I put down Lager, but I also drink Pale Ale.

WalMart sells beer?! God Damn! I wish mine did!

snowy 04-28-2003 10:51 AM

Lager, mostly. Also enjoy pale ales. I like my beers light and crispy with a touch of hops. Not too light, though...Bud Light just tastes like soda pop to me.

Enjoy a darker brew so now and then--enjoy nut brown ales as well as stouts. Just depends on the mood.

Antagony 04-28-2003 04:33 PM

Wow, voting distrubution is pretty much perfect, hehe.

splck 04-28-2003 05:47 PM

Pale ale is what i like to drink now, but I won't turn down almost anything:D
When i was in the UK i really liked bitters

gibber71 04-28-2003 06:20 PM

Lager and Ale. Not into the try everything beer thing.

edmos1 04-29-2003 08:37 AM

I would say depends on the weather, a good Hefewiezen is good for the first beer on a hot day. an IPA with a meal, or a Lager. but for general drinking a pale ale is good. after a couple of the above, then budweiser is delicious. It does say it is the king of beers

Mister Coaster 04-29-2003 04:35 PM

Definately Stouts. I never trust a beer that I can see through!

Haha yeah, that's how stouts retain that air of mystery.

Macheath 04-30-2003 01:27 AM

I would say (super) stout but its just so hard to find good Guinness on tap - For drinking at home, I might have lager in summer and pilsner in winter.

Lucifer 04-30-2003 07:26 AM

Kilkenny Cream Ale on Tap. Otherwise a good crisp lager

Adog 04-30-2003 12:48 PM

Pale Ale or a IPA here......Hmmmm this post is making me thirsty!

GM2 04-30-2003 01:09 PM

Here in Lubbock, Texas, there is a place called the Hub City Brewery. They make a great stout called Strauss & Brown Oatmeal. Has an oatmeal flavor that is almost chocolate in aftertaste. I have the recipe if there's any home brewers that want it.

mizouse 04-30-2003 01:52 PM

My beer tastes seem to come in go in phases. Someitmes I'll drink nothing but stout. Then nothing but ales. Lately, I've been obsessed with Belgian ales and Lambics.

Mister Coaster 04-30-2003 09:06 PM

Nice to see a number of Stout drinkers out there. I must admit, however, that as good as Guiness is, it's just the tip of the stout iceberg. The most serious stout I have come across is North Coast Brewing's Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. If you can find that one (it comes in 4 packs, not 6'ers) you'll be a happy stout drinker.

Other good stouts...
North Coast Old 38 Stout (same brewer as Old Rasputin, not nearly as heavy)
Lost Coast Eightball Stout (no, not a 40 oz'er, is a 22)
Rogue Shakespere Stout
Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout (goes down EASY)
And although it's not a stout, this deserves a mention... Stone Brewing's Arrogant Bastard Ale

GM2 05-01-2003 08:15 AM

You're not worthy!

This stuff will knock your socks off. This is a bottle I bought just so I'd have it on my shelf.

bundy 05-02-2003 06:18 PM

Lagers and Ales for me.
Aussie Lagers are fantastic.
but for a change, James Squire Ale is perfect.

that Arrogant Bastard Ale looks like a winner.

Empty_One 05-03-2003 09:42 AM

My top 3:
Guinness Stout
Mackeson's XXX Stout
Sam Adam's Doppelbock (not sure if they still sell it, but I can still taste it after all these years)

wraithhibn 05-05-2003 06:39 AM

Bass Ale when I can afford it, usually Keystone Lite

Atrox 05-06-2003 01:14 PM

Fullers stout and Stienlager. 2 best beer ive had. the Stienlager has a kind of nutty aftertaste.

The only differences between a bitter and an English Pale Ale are the carbonation level and the specific gravity of the wort (at the outset,) and the beer (when the yeast is done doing it's thing.)

It's much easier to make a good pale ale than it is a good bitter because one uses a (slightly) greater quantity of ingredients, and consequently has more margin for error.

American Pale ale, on the other hand, is chock full of hops. (As are most American beers, compared to their English counterparts).

Tophat665 05-06-2003 06:00 PM

Personally, I prefer beers I've brewed myself, which probably has something to do with my preference for stout. I make one I consider superior to Sweetwater Tavern's gold medal winning Imperial Stout.

I've also made excellent Münchner Dunkel and Helles Lagers, and prety fair pale and scottish ales and porters.

The only kinds of beer I really am not fond of are Barley wines (tend to be unpleasantly bitter with lots of myrcene and other high alpha hops signatures, and metallic - bloody even), American Standard/Premium Lager (Budweiser - no taste to speak of), overly sour Belgian Ales (Scaldis - stuff tastes like parmesan and copper shavings), and Rauchbiers (taste like candied woodsmoke - not why I drink beer.)

Arrogant Bastard rocks. Double Bastard is way too malty to balance properly. Stone's Ruination IPA is pretty frickin' intense too. So's their Smoked Porter. (only smoked beer I really enjoy.)

Hitchcock 05-08-2003 07:25 PM

Stout. I consider everything else lite beer. :D

mino 05-09-2003 03:24 AM

I'm with you, Hitchcock. If you're not drinking stout, you're wasting good drinking time.

That said, I've become very fond of The Dog (Newcastle Brown) quite recently... delicious stuff. Quite hard to get hold of in any quantity down here in the Antipodes, alas.

Antagony 05-22-2003 08:47 PM

Arrogant Bastard Ale should be avoided, in my opinion. However, the same brewery (Stone Brewery) has an IPA that is pretty damn good.

suviko 05-23-2003 05:56 AM

Voted stout, but I rather get a dry English cider and when I get a beer, it is more often lager, but there are some stouts I really like.

Charlatan 05-23-2003 08:46 AM

Went with Stout although I am also fond of some Belgian ales...

G_Whiz 05-23-2003 01:03 PM

I love the darks, so I voted Stout.

Guiness is on it's own, but I one I haven't seen in a while is Taddy Porter.

There are several micros around here that make some damn good darks.

Leander 05-25-2003 03:38 PM

I have a few favorites:
Guiness
Stoudt's Brewery-Scarlet Lady ESB
and seasonally-Sam Smith's Winter Welcome Ale
