The Edible "Jelloware" Cup, designed by 'The Way We See The World'

On June 26th, the Gowanus Studio Space hosted the 2nd annual Jell-O Mold competition in Brooklyn,
New York. The competition encouraged artists, designers, chefs, and lovers of Jell–O to use gelatin
in new and unexpected ways. A company called The Way We See The World won the prize for
sculptural/structural integrity with "Jelloware" – a set of delicious, squishy, colorful glasses.

Jelloware re-imagines the concept of drinking, and imparts a new experience in the way it feels,
tastes, smells, moves, and is even disposed of. The cups are made entirely out of agar agar and
cast in different flavors, such as lemon-basil, ginger-mint, or rosemary-beet. All are specifically
designed to compliment a corresponding drink. Jelloware is meant to be thrown into the grass
after it is used, as agar agar is a seaweed extract and actually nurtures the growth of plants.

The Perfect Portions Digital Scale

By Andrew Liszewski
[product feature]

A big part of a healthy diet is eating sensible portions, but if you’re completely clueless when it comes to how much sugar, carbs, cholesterol or sodium is in a handful of your favorite snack, the Perfect Portions scale is like Nutrition 101. It’s a combination food scale & nutritional calculator that has a built-in database of 1,999 different foods, plus the ability to store an additional 99 custom entries. You just zero the scale, plunk down your food and then punch in the corresponding food code so the scale knows what it’s measuring. The nutritional stats, as well as the total weight, are then displayed on an LCD designed to look like the Nutrition Facts labels found on food packaging these days. As kitchen scales go the Perfect Portions goes above and beyond the call of duty, so the $59.99 price tag doesn’t seem that unreasonable.

A blogger who goes by the moniker Grumpy Frenchman celebrated his birthday with a dinner party
that presented food from different science fiction franchises. He created dishes inspired by Firefly,
Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune, Futurama, Soylent Green, The Lord of the Rings, and Alien
.
Pictured above is a roasted chestburster:
Voila! Roasted Chestburster ‘a la Coloniale’! Big hit with the crowd for the disgusting aspect,
the uber-nerdness of the idea, and the fact that it was basically a nice bit of roasted meat, when all’s said and done. Yum!

Bit of a close up on the jaw. Pictures aren’t perfect because Kim declined to photograph that one
(Her exact words were something like: “OhGodUrgh…”), and the man who stepped forward to do it
for her had already sampled the blue milk quite a bit!

Pizza cutters as art by Frankie Flood -- boingboing

author's comments:
My work investigates one of a kind objects and their role in a world based on mechanical reproduction. Industry has removed the aura from objects and stripped them of their individuality. My pizza cutters seek to demolish the sterile conformity of mass produced objects and represent the stylistic and flamboyant embellishment of groups who live on the fringe of popular culture. The outlaw biker image is a break from the conformity that has taken over America since industrialization. My machined pizza cutters draw inspiration from chopper motorcycles and attempt to reclaim the mythology and economic usefulness of the American worker as patriarch; translating machine or functional object into flesh and blood. The outlaw as defiant nonconformist, as well as social outcast, parallels being an artist who makes functional objects and being an individual who takes pride in the power of invention and skill.

Lotus Leaf
Rendered in canned goods

The structure above, created in 2005 by Platt Byard Dovell White Architects LLP, is made from 5,000 cans of sliced bamboo shoots and stuffed vine leaves.

President Barack Obama
Rendered in cereal

This mosaic of President Barack Obama, created by Hank Willis Thomas and Ryan Alexiev of CerealArt.com, showcases a slew of sugary cereals including Honeycomb, Life and Froot Loops.

“Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat”
Rendered in leeks

The above artwork, inspired by one of Vincent van Gogh’s many self-portraits, was displayed at the Paris-Beijing Photo Gallery from November 23, 2008 to January 22, 2009 as part of Chinese artist Ju Duoqi’s exhibit titled The Vegetable Museum. In the series, Duoqi recreates Western masterpieces using common Chinese cuisine ingredients—including tofu, cabbage, ginger, lotus roots, coriander and sweet potato

“Gold Marilyn Monroe”
Rendered in Nestlé Smarties

“Toaster"
Rendered in toasted bread

This 14.5 x 16.5-inch mosaic by Ingrid Falk and Gustavo Aguerre was made entirely of toast—specifically, 3,053 slices with varying degrees of toastedness, including shades of white, beige, tan, ochre, rust and black. The two artists are known for using bread and food as a recurring theme in their artwork. This piece, which took several days of toasting—and the use of multiple friends’ toasters—to complete, was displayed at the Galleria Milano in Milan, Italy, in October and November 1999.

While taking the extra three minutes to research my post, (as well as the prerequisite five minutes already invested into its creation) I've come to learn the artist responsible for these bento creations.

Her name is Maki Ogawa, ans she is a bento designer.
Her personal website / blog is immensely popular, and she is talented and well-liked enough
to have published a book on her extraordinarily-detailed creations - have a look for yourself.

Here is a parting illustration of her talents and creative vision (that goes into her penchant for "playing with her food")
