What are your favorite fruits?

Fruits, so many of them in the world.

Do you have any favorites? What are they?

I have a couple favorites, mostly because of availabilty and seasons.

I love philippine mangos, mangosteens, and lansones, asian fruits that don't really get to America. Mangosteens supposedly are now available, but lansones, probably will never make it here.

Summer: I love apricots and peaches.
Fall: Freshly picked Stayman/Winesap apples

Baraka_Guru 09-17-2008 10:01 AM

Avocados, bananas, sweet citruses, mangoes, papayas, pears, apples, peaches, grapes, and most berries.

I like fruits. :)

PonyPotato 09-17-2008 10:01 AM

I like a lot of fruits.

Favorites: Mangoes, peaches, nectarines, oranges, plums, apricots, berries.

I also really love apples (sliced and dipped in peanut butter, yum), pears, pineapple, avocados, grapes, bananas, tangerines, melons, etc etc etc. One thing my mom catered to when I was a child was my love of fruit, and I am ever grateful for that.

I haven't tried many "exotic" fruits because I am not familiar with their preparation. I don't enjoy papayas or grapefruit, really, but those are generally the exception to the "I love fruit" rule.

jewels 09-17-2008 10:08 AM

Mango, banana, avocado, pineapple, pear, green apples, kiwi, berries and mamey! :p

Oops forgot the cantaloupe!

I want some fruit salad. Now.

Meditrina 09-17-2008 10:15 AM

Like with veggies, I am not selective with fruit either. I love to try new ones. I guess if I had to choose a favorite, it would be melons. I love honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, mmmmmmm.......

great. Now I am hungry. good thing I leave in 15 minutes... I think I have some cantaloupe at home.

edited to ask: Why is it that you asked FAVORITE fruit, but WORST vegetable? Why not ask what veggie you LOVE and what fruit you DISLIKE? :D

abaya 09-17-2008 10:17 AM

MANGO!!! with sticky rice (with coconut milk, ohhhhhhhhh god, soo good)

Other Asian fruits... mangosteen for sure, and lychees and rambutan... mmmmmmm. Cyn, did you know that they sell most of those fresh at Hagkaup and Nóatún here in Iceland? (Well, fresh as in shipped from Asia and usually overripe, but still... in the US, I can only find those in Asian groceries and Chinatowns.) They're just prohibitively expensive, of course.

And the usual green apples, pears, oranges (only the easy-peel kind, 'cause I'm a little lazy), occasional banana, and how can I forget KIWI? :D I just can't eat too much of it because it makes my tongue get all sore. :(

Whoops, forgot cold cantaloupe (fresh from the fridge, cut in chunks the way my mom always did it), and of course all kinds of berries... but mostly raspberries, right off the vine in my old backyard. :D

I think there's already a thread about favorite vegetables. I remember Crompsin posting about nearly every kind of vegetables on earth and then someone arguing with him over whether lima beans were even vegetables. :shakehead:

I forgot kiwi, too.

Raspberries are definitely my favorite type of berry. Followed closely by strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and gooseberries.

I will have to search for this later!

Becuase fruits aren't just foisted upon you, whereas vegetables are. You can get sides of veggies, but sides of fruits, just seem few and far between.

Come to Lebanon!!! For dessert, sometimes they just bring out several trays of whole fruit... and that's it. Yeah, just apples, oranges, bananas, the usual. I found it rather odd... but hey, better than eating too much cake, right?

Cynthetiq 09-17-2008 10:38 AM

yes, I like that about the eastern countries... fruit is part of the meal.

as far as mangosteens in Iceland... I picked one up at Hagkup and it sounded like a marble swirling around inside. I put it back down.

Jozrael 09-17-2008 10:42 AM

Strawberries~

Not to mention bananas, grapes, melon (all 3), orange slices, peaches pears plums kiwis pineapples hell all the berries yum too many to list.

Just not apples and grapefruits =*(

snowy 09-17-2008 10:42 AM

Right now apples and pears are in season, so they're my favorites. Nectarines too.

Come winter I'll buy some mandarins. Yum.

When the raspberries are in, those are my favorites.

But always, regardless of season, I love cantaloupe and other orange musk melons. In college I would eat whole platefuls of cantaloupe from the fruit bar in the dining hall during brunch, skipping the rest of the brunch offerings entirely. I can eat an entire cantaloupe in the process of cutting it up--it won't even make it to a bowl.

With fruit, my favorite is whatever I'm eating at the moment. But cantaloupe is always no. 1.

 Yeah, I don't buy them here. I'm not sure who does, because the Thai population certainly can't afford them, for the most part.

ktspktsp 09-17-2008 11:17 AM

Strawberries. Mmmmmm.
I eat bananas and pears more often, but I still like strawberries the most.

jorgelito 09-17-2008 12:08 PM

Ever since I got my melon baller I have gone melon crazy!

And yeah, I like fruits. In a manly heterosexual way of course :)

CinnamonGirl 09-17-2008 01:09 PM

mmmm, I want to go make a fruit salad now...

Strawberries, bananas, kiwi, and apples are particular favorites of mine. The only fruit that comes to mind that I DON'T like is grapefruit.

Yay for Philippine mangos! They also have the best dried mangos :) As for asian fruits, LOVE asian bananas the best. They're just not the same as the grocery store bananas and much better tasting in my opinion.

As for mangosteens, I found some dried ones at my local Trader Joe's!

I love most berries: strawberries, raspberries, marionberry. For some reason, not a fan of fresh blueberries, but love them in muffins or smoothies..

I also really love apples (Fuji and Pink lady is my favorite!)

Pineapples...

I love fruit!

abaya 09-17-2008 03:00 PM

Dried mangosteens? How does that work?

Also, Thai mangoes can give Filipino mangoes a run for their money!!! ;)

jewels 09-17-2008 03:12 PM

Oooh I forgot about figs and dates! Mmmmm ...

maybird 09-17-2008 03:46 PM

I love strawberries (fresh from the market). I lived in california once and we went to the farmers market and those damn things were so freaken good! I've never had good fruit as I did when I lived there. I also love oranges, kiwi, pinapple, apples, and grapes.

Fotzlid 09-17-2008 03:54 PM

I never developed a taste for fresh mangos despite their constant presence in the house. I do like dried mangos though.

My favorites are berries, watermelon and especially pineapples.

anti fishstick 09-17-2008 04:03 PM

yeah for whatever reason, fresh mangoes aren't my thing. it's weird. i don't hate it. but not my fave.

jorgelito 09-17-2008 05:23 PM

Seriously people, get a melon baller. It will change your life.

annie1 09-17-2008 05:25 PM

Pineapple is my absolute favorite. Fresh, not canned- bleh!

Grasshopper Green 09-17-2008 05:37 PM

Cantaloupe, cherries, and red grapes are my favorite fruits. And most berries, pineapple, peaches, plums, and nectarines. In fact, I love most fruit...except for honeydew melon, dates, and red and golden delicious apples. Not delicious, in my opinion.

Eweser 09-18-2008 06:05 AM

Apricots are my absolute favorite, but I'm very fond of peaches and nectarines also. I eat a lot of bananas because of their portability, but they can't be too ripe. I like 'em with a little green on the peeling.

ShaniFaye 09-18-2008 06:22 AM

Pineapple and Strawberries are ab fabs

avacado is a fruit? lol I listed in the most hated veggie thread

Martian 09-18-2008 11:09 AM

I'm not terribly adventurous when it comes to fruit. I buy citrus (oranges and grapefruit, mostly), peaches and sometimes kiwi. I buy whatever's in season and/or what's on sale. I don't like apples or pears, though, so I don't eat them. Apples upset my stomach.

I do have some fruit in the house pretty much all the time. If I'm peckish and want a snack it's usually a piece of fruit or a couple slices of toast.

I don't much care for honeydew either--I think I must be mildly allergic to it, because I get a tickle in my throat every time I've tried to eat it, so now I just avoid it. Red Delicious apples were not necessarily bred for flavor--they were bred to look appealing and have a long shelf life. Goldens are a little too sweet for me--I like a bit of bite to my apples that the Goldens are decidedly lacking. When I use them for cooking I tend to blend another apple in with the Golden.

I love apples, but I'm really picky about which cultivar to eat--some are much better than others, depending on which attributes they were bred for.

kutulu 09-18-2008 11:35 AM

Nothing compares to a perfectly ripe strawberry.

Skutch 09-18-2008 12:59 PM

Yeah Ive been making strawberry smoothies lately and they are delicious.

skizziks 09-26-2008 10:09 AM

I always liked Paul Lynde. I also like Avocado and Durian.

lostgirl 09-26-2008 11:15 AM

Tomatoes, strawberries, and nectarines.

dlish 09-26-2008 02:09 PM

dates
kiwi
strawberry
mango
pineapple

ItWasMe 09-26-2008 05:00 PM

asian pears, pears, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, sweet apples and pears. I think I would like guava. I've only tried the juice. Love fresh coconut but it sometimes makes me ill. Dried cranberries and dried blueberries are awesome.

I am not much into citrus or anything sour anymore. No lemons, grapefruit needs sugar. I've tried to like mango and papaya but I just cannot. Reminds me of a sweet version of okra, and I don't care for okra.

span2 10-26-2008 10:45 PM

Had dragon fruit (pitaya) when I was on Hainan Island in China a few years ago and I couldn't get enough of it.

I would like to try sprouted coconuts, where a coconut is germinated and the coconut water has mixed with the meat and solidifies into a sponge cake like consistency. Link for some pics: Eat a Sprouted Coconut

SabrinaFair 10-27-2008 05:27 AM

Mangoes--they're excellent by themselves, and they're also great on the grill. Slice mango, put in a foil packet (spice if your want) and grill. YUM!
Raspberries
Strawberries

I'm really into apples right now, it being fall and all. Sliced honeycrisp apples with crunchy peanut butter is my favorite thing to eat right now.

That being said, there's really not a fruit I don't like.

How about a perfectly ripe organic strawberry? I bought a case of those every week this summer and remembered how dreamy strawberries really are. Then I went back to shopping at the local Giant instead of Trader Joe's and bought the regular strawberries, and found that they have all lost their flavor. They might as well call them waterberries.

My favorites have always been mango, pineapple and the three best berries ever: raspberry, strawberry and blueberry. Depending on the quality of them, they switch around in my list of preferences. I think the strawberries and blueberries in particular are very dependent on the quality. The organic farmer's market ones are always at the top of the list because they have the original flavor the berries should have. Store bought usually don't.

I also enjoy every kind of citrus, fig, avocado (I grew up with these trees in my backyard). Guava is pretty good, but I have to be in the mood. Peaches, plums and apples are yummy, but I never seem to be in the mood for apricots, nectarines or pluots. Clementines were a late discovery for me since I grew up in SoCal, but they are pretty amazing. And of course, longan in heavy syrup. I don't think I've ever had it fresh but it's probably damn good.

nomcat 10-27-2008 08:53 PM

Nectarines... truly food of the gods!
