Does Lox cream cheese smell this bad??
Hello all,
I've never tried Lox cream cheese before and we bought one packaged in a store and opened it and it smelled so bad, I mean VERy bad...like rotten cheese or something. Is that how it's supposed to smell? Or is the store just putting out expired cream cheese for us to consume? Thanks for any help. |
Perhaps this is your problem: Lox isn't cream cheese. It's cured, thinly-sliced salmon.
What smells bad as cream cheese might smell great as fish. |
Hello Ratbastid, Thanks for your help.
Yes, I know: it is cheese and lox (salmon). That's why I stated it as Lox cream cheese. It does not smell like fish, however. It smells like stinky rotten cheese (or a very stinky wet towel). Is this how it's supposed to smell? |
In my experience, lox cream cheese shouldn't smell any different from regular cream cheese when properly refrigerated. Or any flavored cream cheese, for that matter. If it doesn't pass the smell test, run away. The smell test is good. For lots of things. If it smells like "eeewwwww!" DON"T EAT IT!!!

In my kitchen, my rule is: "When in doubt....throw it out."
BTW - most Americans have trouble with "strong cheeses". |
I LOVE lox. Especially on a toasted bagel with some tea. Oy. Happy Hanukah!

If you have the chutzpah, bring it back to the store. Always check dates on dairy items, some stores are infamous for not rotating stock. |
