boiled peanuts ?
How do you boil peanuts; for how long, how much water over them?
|
4-5 pounds of green peanuts in shell
4-6 quarts of water 1 cup salt Wash the peanuts in cold water until the water runs clear. soak them in cold water for half an hour. Put 'em in a large pot, cover completely with water, cook 4-7 hours on high. Taste after 4 hours, then every 10 minutes after that until they're right. Drain them immediately after cooking. Peel and eat hot, cold, chilled, or drop into a bottle of (I swear I am not making this up) RC Cola and drink the results for that traditional southern taste. |
Pardon me, but why the hell would you boil peanuts? What does it do to them?

Makes them soft and salty. Not my cup of tea, to be honest, but a lot of southerners swear by them. |
It's the caviar of the south, didn't you know? :P
|
I don't know about them being the "caviar of the south", but they're pretty darn tasty!!!
My father has been boiling peanuts for as long as I can remember. My father in law does too, for that matter. Shakran's recipe above is pretty much dead-on as to how they do it. I prefer roasted and salted peanuts in my RC Cola, however!! |
Did you not read the Deep South thread? Everything needed about boiled peanuts is there. :)
Speaking of which...my sister is mailing me several pounds of peanuts to boil. Can I get a Hooray! And Sultana is right...they are the caviar of the south. Any southerner who's anyone knows that. |
