Whole Wheat

Lately I've been making a conscious effort to switch over to whole grains - no more white breads, rices etc - or at the very least, reduce my intake. So recently, I've used mostly whole wheat pasta in my pasta dishes with interesting results. On the whole, it's pretty good, although the consistecy takes a bit getting used to. Also the 'al dente' test requires more scrutiny. Texture wise, it is a bit gritty and gummy but it didn;t really bother me too much.

I actually undercook it a bit slightly, rinse incold water then stir fry it up in Asian style noodle dishes. Try it!

Anyone else have any experience with switching to whole grains from white pasta/flour etc? My next foray will be baking breads with whole wheat flour, if I can find it.

I made the switch, anyone else?

I've actually been forced to make the switch the other way...

I have pretty much only eaten Whole grain breads and pastas for the past 10 to 15 years. I just can't eat white bread as it is so bland.

Since moving to Singapore, I have been eating at Hawker stalls most of the time (very cheap to do so) and they only serve white rice and white toast... no whole grains.

It's very odd.

I can't wait until I have my own place so I can start cooking for myself again.

I started eating whole grain pasta this past year too, and I don't think I'll be turning back. You're right about the taste/texture differences, but you'll adjust to before too long. It's not that whole grain pasta is worse, just different.

And it's so easy to not get enough fiber in your diet, and whole grain pasta is a fantastic source for it... it's almost a no-brainer if you try to watch what you eat.

If I may.... not all whole grains are created equal..... I find the brand Healthy Harvest is the best. In fact I cant tell much of a difference other than it keeps me full longer.

I switched to eating brown bread, brown rice, etc. about 2 years ago. It was a little funky tasting at first, but now I prefer the taste. White stuff just seems so bland and boring now!

Here's a secret: the carb quality of white basmati rice is comparable to brown rice.

Here's another secret: basmati rice (brown or white) is delicious!

The best secret yet: I grew up on Minute Rice...
