Avocado - recipes and tips (just for eyeseepeedude)
Having discovered this delicious treat a couple months ago, I've been trying all sorts of new things with it.
So far my simple favorite is to cut the shell in half and add in salt, pepper, lemon juice and, just for fun, some garlic powder. Yum, yum. |
my wife seems to enjoy avocado slices on her hot dogs as well...
EWWWWWWWWW :) |
I also enjoy an avocado plain. I think that perhaps the easiest way to eat it is to cut it in half, then taking one half in hand, cut it into slices without cutting through the rind. Take your knife and run it along the edge between the rind and the flesh of the avocado. The slices should easily slide out of the rind when turned upside down and pressed. You can also do this to make avocado cubes or eject a whole half. It does take some skill with the knifework though. Mmm, avocado.
My other tip? Use fresh ground pepper. Makes it soo much better ;) |
guacamole.
mash avo. add lime juice. fresh. salt, pepper. 1 diced tomato some finely chopped onion pinch cumin eat with good tortilla chips. best to make and eat whilst on vacation in mexico. :D |
I substitute some fresh cilantro for the cumin in my guac. Must be fresh though, none of that McCormick stuff!
(new question: why am I talking guac recipes at 10:45 on a friday night?) |
The only thing I have to add is a trick to remove the pit.
Cut the avacado in half (lengthwise) then twist to seperate the two halves. Hold the piece with the pit facing you and smack the sharp part of the knife into the pit. Then twist the pit and the knife ... the pit will pop out attached to the knife. I'm sure most of you know this trick, but I'm sure some noobies don't. Try and buy your av's when they are rock hard and let them ripen in your house. (less people squeezing them=blemish free) |

(*aside*)Dear Lord, what I have I done to deserve this?(*/aside*) 10:45 on a Friday night, eh? Good question. |
Guacamole is crap if it has no salsa in it. The spicier the better, as the avocado dulls the spice. The salsa also makes it a little easier to dip with, not as stiff. I like the cumin/cilantro ideas, though I would skip tomato and just use salsa instead.
