St. Patty's Day menu

I'm planning on making a big Irish-ish ( ;) ) feast of corned beef, potatoes, cabbage, short bread, Guinness, and whiskey for a bunch of fine folks on St. Patty's Day. I won't be keeping strictly to an Irish theme, as I'll also be including my world-famous cheesy garlic-mashed potatoes, but I'd like some input as to other menu items I can include.
Oh, and as a side note, any particularly Irish activities to propose for the party? All I can think of is getting rip roaring drunk, and fighting... I have nothing against getting drunk, although we'll certainly have designated drivers in the crowd. And I'd like to avoid the brawling.

We have a little room in the back yard for sheep.... :hmm:

It wouldn't be st patty's day without Irish Coffee...

Coffee
Healthy shot of jameson's
Whipped cream with some green creme de menthe drizzled over it

blackthorn's colcannon sounds outstanding here:

Have lots of irish toasts and blessings available (I did this one year as an ice breaker with people - i split toasts and blessings up into two cards - and everyone got a card when they entered... they then had to match up their card with the other person...

maybe a limerick writing contest...

and its the new zealanders that you have to worry about sheep -- not the irish :D we're too busy getting drunk to care about sheep...

Get some good Irish music and play that all night...

Otherwise...drinking is about it.

What, NO darts? All the Irish Pubs around here have them!

Willravel 03-08-2006 05:56 PM

I'm making the biggest rack of lamb I can on my bbq, corned beef, cabbage, the drakest irish beer I can find, and we're going to do a small concert. I'm only having a few friends over (15-20), but it should be really fun. I can't wait for Oktobersest.

Storytelling and singing are the two most Irish activities there are. Preferably while drinking.

Do you think colcannon would be too much like the corned beef and cabbage and potatos I already have planned?

Right you are, Anxst. I wonder what my odds for success would be with the modern American generation...Irish kareoke, anyone? :D

Irish descent and grew up in a house with Irish music as the main form of entertainment.

Beer
Songs
Stories
Friends and Family

Simple foods, gotta have some kind of meat with some kind of potatoes. But really it's about the beer/whiskey and laughing your drunken ass off. I've got my Irish Flag ready to be hoisted.

Darts is a good idea, Horseshoes is another excellent game.. if you have any horseshoes lying around.

I'd certainly be up for Irish karaoke, but I grew up in a household where Sunday afternoons were my father and I working outside singing folk songs.

Guinness and potatoes - all day long!

Random factoid, probably true:
Quote:

Each year, thousands of Irish Americans gather with their loved ones on St. Patrick's Day to share a “traditional” meal of corned beef and cabbage. Though cabbage has long been an Irish food, corned beef only began to be associated with St. Patrick's Day at the turn of the century. Irish immigrants living on New York City's Lower East Side substituted corned beef for their traditional dish of Irish bacon to save money. They learned about the cheaper alternative from their Jewish neighbors.

Here...we're not Irish, so we'll just have to settle for a pussy buffet!

Charlatan 03-16-2006 06:46 AM

It's funny, I've never heard of eating Corned Beef Hash and Cabbage for St. Patrick's Day...

All I know is, beer, singing, storytelling, dancing and more beer.

Who has time to eat?

Not corned beef hash -- god that stuff's nasty... corned beef... a big ole brisket... :D

Charlatan 03-16-2006 08:02 AM

I love a good brisket... just never associated it with St. Patrick's Day.

Beer... it's all about the beer.

You have to make Irish Soda Bread on St Pat's
Here's my mum's recipe:
2 cups flour
1 cup quick cooking or old fashioned oats (not instant)
1/4 cup sugar
2 Tbl baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
mix above ingredients in a bowl, cut in 3 tbl soft butter with 2 knives or a pastry blender
add 1/3 cup raisins and 1 cup milk
knead on a lightly floured suface 1or 2 min., shape into a round loaf approx 6 1/2 in.
place on a greased cookie sheet, cut an x about 1/2 in. deep across top of loaf, brush with a beaten egg wash, bake at 375 until golden brown approx. 35-45 min
a toohpick inserted in the center should come out dry.
Happy St Patty's Day!
