little_tippler's big_apple adventure!
So, I'm finally crossing the pond and coming to NYC, and I would love to meet some more TFPers, this time in their natural habitat!
I will be in New York from the 18th to the 25th of August and I would love to maybe meet for dinner and drinks any time between the 19th and the 24th. Any other suggestions are welcome. I don't know much of anything in New York so any recommendations of where to go will have to come from you! Here's hoping we can make this happen

Although Mrs. O'Rights would love a trip back to her "home town", a trip to New York is rather out of the question for me right now. So, unless you want to travel a little further West...say...1152 miles (1854 kilometers), I'll just have to make do with lots and lots of pictures.

and just after your visit I'll be in Barcelona and Madrid!
Okay, I've got those dates in mind. I have some other visitors coming in that weekend, but otherwise... Here's something else as an artist you may want to go to some of the many museums here. My mother in law is a ceramic artist and she does tours of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I believe she still can do private tours on Mondays when the museum is closed to the public. Also, Skogafoss HATES going to museums so I rarely get the opportunity to go to them, if you're looking for a museum partner.... I'm game.

WK, you're making me blush!
The museum sounds great! I am planning on seeing a couple, depending on what's on. I have my heart set on seeing something at the New Museum, and MoMA if I can. There is also an interesting show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (Yinka Shonibare). I would also like to just walk around an area where there would be lots of interesting galleries, like the Lower East Side for example. I'm glad we'll be able to get together, let's keep talking!

I'm not familiar with any galleries in my neighborhood (LES), I do know a few in SoHo that I've been to for shows.

Hey LT, I'm trying to figure out my schedule for that week, to see if I can cram in a trip to NYC to meet you somehow.
Since you'll be around the week before classes start and I'm teaching next semester, I might have a number of meetings. Working out the kinks with fellow TAs, I'll see what I can do.

you're going to have a hell of a time. theres a tonne to do in NYC. i have fond memories of my time in NYC with halx and cynth. you should ample time to fit everything in. central park walk early in the morning is a must. costs nothing, but is priceless. one of those greyline? tours around the city gives you a good understanding of the city and is good if you are pressed for time. ill be waiting for your stopover in dubai

Ok - I just worked through my schedule for that week. Looks like I won't be able to come out to visit while you're in town. I'm swamped starting th 19th.

sad to hear it gg... maybe there will be other opportunities soon. Who knows, if I like it too much, I may have to come back! I am pretty excited about this trip, for several reasons. I feel a little overwhelmed by the idea of New York, but I can't wait to see what it's like!
I have been doing a little research on galleries and I'll post a quick summary of what I think might be cool very soon.

yes it can be a bit on the overwhelming side, especially if you aren't used to the sheer volume of people and the walking... the walking, and the more walking...
my august is getting very cramped... but that's okay.

I'm ok with walking, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I plan to try and walk a good chunk of Manhattan if I can. Not sure if I'm biting off more than I can chew but then I am always ambitious.
I have had a more in-depth look at museums and galleries so I wanted to come and tell you what I've found so far. Many galleries are closed during the dates I will be there at. Others don't really have such interesting shows at that time. I definitely want to walk around Soho and the Lower East Side and check out a few, even just randomly. A friend of mine told me that it's a great area to explore for galleries. I also noticed many galleries in the Chelsea area. Hmmm. I have a rather extensive list, even minus the closed less interesting ones. A few I might like to see: Gagosian Gallery (there are 3 locations just in New York!) - particularly the Richard Prince show Bitforms Gallery - I think it will be closed but I'd like to go and check. It has some amazing interactive art shows. Andrea Rosen Gallery Marian Goodman Gallery English Kills Art Gallery Cheim & Read Gallery Leo Koenig Inc. Paul Kasmin Gallery - current show is called 'Naked!' Zach Feuer Gallery P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center - out of all the 'museum' venues I saw, this looked the most interesting right now because it has all sorts of offbeat shows on -this is in Long Island. New Museum - not sure about the shows, but I just want to see it. I am crazy about emerging art. MoMA - there is a show on 'The Erotic Object', and an interesting performance/installation by a Slovakian artist. Then there is of course the actual Museum Collection. This is kind of a must see, though I don't have to do it now. Some other options: Whitney Museum of American Art - there are some good shows on, Claes Oldenburg, Edward Hopper. Brooklyn Museum - show by Yinka Shonibare, and several other interesting shows Performance Space 122 - there is an interesting Performance/Play going on during August there, might be fun! Ok, after running off all this, I hope some of you might be interested in joining me for a little cultural adventure. I was thinking we could choose a date (19th, 20th, not the 21st because of the plans for that evening to watch quadro2000's gig, 22nd or 23rd) and do this in the afternoon, and maybe follow it with drinks or dinner somewhere fun. Any takers? Let me know

So, I am flying in tomorrow, sorry I didn't get back to this until now!
I will have acess to TFP and emails in NY so I am reachable. Manic, I have no hard set date on going to see museums, maybe you can tell me which day might be good for you? Maybe it's worth going on the Friday before quadro2000's live music gig, so we can just go on to that straight after. Let me know what's good for you. Cyn, I hope you're still up for some museum hopping? Redlemon, are you interested at all in joining us? See you on the other side!
