Fantastic! (The New Doctor Who to air on Sci-Fi!!!)

GREAT news for sci-fi lovers today. The new Doctor Who has been sold to the Sci-Fi channel and is going to begin airing in March! Granted, it will be a season behind, but I am SO glad that American audiences will finally be able to see this great series without having to go through the hassle of downloading!

If you're too lazy to read the articles, it will air on Fridays at 9pm ET/PT. The bad news is, the first season of the new Doctor Who was to be released on DVD in the US in February, but that date has now been pushed back to July 4. Personally, I didn't even know there were plans to release the DVDs in the US, so I'm glad to hear that anyway :)

I am so pleased :) If you haven't seen the new Doctor Who, be sure to check it out when it starts airing in March. It's truly excellent, and it promises to be even better this second upcoming season with David Tennant taking over the role as The Doctor (which I guess is over a year away to be aired in the US)!

EDIT: Now I have the theme song stuck in my head :D

The "New" Doctor Who? Not the "old" Doctor Who from the 60s, huh? I loved watching that series when I lived in England. That and The Prisoner. Wildly entertaining for a youngster.

SecretMethod70 01-12-2006 02:55 PM

Yeah, it's really more like the "sorta-new" Doctor Who :p Doctor Who aired from 1963-1989 and was then taken off the air, but it was brought back last year. It's new because it has a much more updated look and feel, but it's old because it's not "starting over." It starts up again with Doctor #9 (for those who don't know, The Doctor - a Time Lord - regenerates after he dies and that is how the show was able to be on for 26 years straight...just kill The Doctor and get a new actor to play him). The Doctors 1-7 were in the 26 years of the series, and The Doctor 8 was in the 1996 TV movie.

There's actually a TON of info at the Wikipedia Doctor Who page.

That IS fantastic news! I've been enjoying the CBC broadcasts here in Canada and feeling so sorry for the Doctor deprived USA.

For all things Doctor Who, I go to http://www.gallifreyone.com

Fantastic indeed! :) This show is a must see for anyone who loves sci fi! The writing is leaps above most of the crap on TV now and it's a really good mix of humor, drama, and suspense. Even if you don't like sci fi you should watch the show!

My baby brother got a Darlick (sp?) costume for Christmas almost 40 years ago!

Willravel 01-12-2006 03:57 PM

I have to wonder...is this replacing SG1 or Atlantis? Or will this be on counter to the SG1 and Atlantis season? Right now the 9:00 time spot belongs to heavy favorite Battlestar Galactica (the best show ever), so that means that either of the gate shows, which have each seen falling ratings, could be in trouble. I am OVERJOYED that we'll get to see Dr. Who across the pond (I was actually waiting for BBC America to pick it up, kudos to Sci Fi for not making another POS movie and making a smart investment). I will be waiting in an anxious state until March!!! Thanks for the heads up, Secret Method!

The first David Tennant episode aired as a Christmas Special in the UK. It was bloody brilliant.

:D

Indeed it was :D

As for what it will replace, seeing as how it doesn't start up until March, my guess is that Battlestar Galactica will be done by then.

Eccleston was fantastic. I was kind of disappointed he didn't hang out longer, but after seeing Tennant in the Christmas special, I think it'll be just fine. :)

I felt the same way when Eccleston left, he was so great I wanted more of him. However after seeing Tennant in the role, I'm more excited than ever for the new season (series, whatever :p) to start! As much depth and emotional power Eccleston brought to the role, Tennant's quirky fun personality is right on for the character and so much fun to watch. :)

Absolutely. Not to mention he's got, in my opinion anyway, fantastic timing...comedy-wise.

That little bit in the Christmas special about the food in his robe was great.

fresnelly 01-13-2006 12:34 PM

My favourite parts where when the Aliens started speaking english and the ending where he ends the Prime Minister's career.

"Don't you think she look's a bit tired?" was brilliant.

It's so refreshing to have some sci-fi that doesn't revolve around a futuristic pseudo-military organization.

SecretMethod70 01-13-2006 12:55 PM

See, that's what I love about Tennant: he plays funny so well, yet when he needs to be serious, he's serious, i.e. "No second chances; I'm that sort of a man." and, as fresnelly pointed out, the genius "Don't you think she looks tired?"

The Christmas special really had a lot of GREAT lines for The Doctor IMO, both serious and comedic. Almost makes me feel bad that most Americans will have to wait over a year to see David Tennant in the role ;) :D

EDIT: Wow, Wikipedia really has a TON of info on Doctor Who:

Sidekick K9 returns to Doctor Who

Robot dog K9 will be reunited with Doctor Who in the new series after 24 years apart, say the show's producers.

K9, who helped Tom Baker's Time Lord between 1977 and 1981, will join new Doctor David Tennant for one episode.

The show, to be screened on BBC One next spring, sees the team investigate sinister events at a modern-day school.

It will co-star Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor Anthony Head and Elisabeth Sladen, who is returning as 1970s Doctor's assistant Sarah Jane Smith.

K9 and Sarah Jane will join the Doctor and his current sidekicks, Rose and Mickey, in a fight against the evil Krillitanes.

Producer Phil Collinson said it was "great" to be welcoming back K9.

"A whole generation fondly remember him as an ever faithful companion and best friend to Tom Baker's Doctor," he said.

"I hope the new generation of viewers will fall in love with him in the same way."

John Leeson will return to provide the voice of K9.

"I am delighted to have been invited back on board - and a little gathered rust is no object to a fully functional K9," he said.

K9 was designed as a robotic pet by a Professor Marius, who left him to the Doctor.

A total of three versions of K9 were built. The Doctor sent the third one to companion Sarah Jane, who had left in 1976.

Sarah Jane and K9 appeared together in the spin-off show K9&Co in 1981 and the 1983 anniversary special The Five Doctors.

Revived after a 16-year absence, Doctor Who proved to be a ratings success on its return in March.

A 13-part series, including the K9 episode, will follow a Christmas special.

The Cybermen will return in the new series, which will also see the Doctor and Rose meet Queen Victoria and an evil race of Cat Women.

One episode will be written by comedian Stephen Fry, while The League of Gentleman star Mark Gatiss will once again contribute to the writing.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't mentioned in the articles I linked to earlier, here is some info from from Outpost Gallifrey (including a likely starting date!):

Where are we getting the March 17 date, people are asking? That's the week after the end of the current 'back ten episode' seasons of the "Stargate" and "Battlestar Galactica" series currently running on Sci-Fi, and we're told this will follow immediately. As Sci-Fi is preempting "Stargate Atlantis", what this means for the other shows on that night is anyone's guess -- i.e. whether or not "Stargate SG-1" or "Battlestar Galactica" continue in reruns or are pulled from the schedule -- but it's potentially an attempt to continue the ratings Sci-Fi currently has, as the channel has several shows now in production (including the sci-fi drama/comedy series "Eureka") that it might pair the series with; we simply don't know at this point.

Have you been watching the second season?

Eccleston was good, but Tennant is much, much better. The range of emotion this guy goes through and the skill which he does...it's fantastic. I hope he sticks around for a while.

I should also mention the writing, which has improved considerably. It's lost a bit of its cheese (I've yet to see an alien fart joke...), but that's okay because what you get in return is so much better.

onodrim 06-06-2006 05:47 AM

Been watching and loving the second season myself. Tennant is indeed great and in many ways, better as the Doctor. The last episode (The Impossible Planet) is a great example of his range. When he first arrives on the space station he is joking around, having a good time, exploring the mystery of this new place, but then as soon as he realizes he is "stuck" and brought Rose into the problem, his depth of pain and worry is evident with just a single look. Can't wait for the conclusion next week! I love how they tied this two part set into the week with 06/06/06 as the date.

I'm being a good little boy and waiting until the 2nd season starts broadcasting in Canada in the Fall and can't wait. I got my Tardis, I mean my son's Tardis, Moneybank in the mail last month :D

Any new converts thanks to the Sci Fi channel broadcasts?

You better believe it!
I started watching when it came on Sci-fi. This is my first incarnation of Dr. Who.
I've been aware of the show since I was a kid, and they aired a version on PBS (Tom Baker's Doctor, I believe), but I always thought it was too weird.
Turns out, I wasn't mentally mature enough for it.

It's a shame about Christopher Eccleston leaving the role, but I'm looking forward to David Tennant as the new Doctor, now that I've read the posts above.

I haven't made it that far yet... :)

Seems like young Rose is getting into a lot of trouble this season. It's nice that she's moved beyond the standard side kick stuff.

Indeed, I do think Tennant is more "Doctor-y." The writing has improved, but it's not without its flaws. It's lost the bad cheese, such as the thing with the Slitheen farting, but it's been replaced by a lot of joking around between The Doctor and Rose. Generally I like it, but I have read some fans complain that they can be a little too unserious in very serious moment, and that's a complaint I can definitely understand. I don't know if you've seen the werewolf episode, but Spoiler: I did think it was a bit ridiculous that while *running for their lives* from a werewolf, they'd stop and say "can you believe it? a WEREWOLF!" "I know!!" I like seeing The Doctor and Rose joke around, but sometimes the way it's written it makes it seem like they don't have much respect for how serious the situation is at times.

guthmund 06-07-2006 06:01 AM

I get a kick out of watching Tennant's irreverent Doctor. I mean, here's this Time Lord fellow, who has been to the ends of the universe and back, through to different dimensions, from the beginnings to the ends and he's still gets excited about running into a bona fide werewolf.

Sure it's serious, but it's also amazingly new and exciting. Not to mention after dealing with the likes of the Slitheen, the Dalek and such, a werewolf must seem like a walk in the park.

By the way: Spoiler: Impossible Planet was very, very good. Black holes, cryptic writings, the occasional apocolyptic remark ("an inverted self-extrapolating reflex of 6 to the 6th power every 6 seconds" or something like that...)? This is certainly one of the better episodes of this season and I can't wait to see the conclusion.

Whose voice was that? It sounded a lot like Christopher Lee, but I'm not all that certain.

Edit: Spoiler: Turns out the voice of the beast is Gabriel Woolf.
