Film Noir
Next semester I am taking a film noir class. Now, I love film in general. I love watching the film, I love watching how it was made..I love every aspect of it. Period. Anyways, I have only seen a few film noir movies...and technically most of them would be considered neo-noir or post-noir since most of them were in color and in present time. Anyone here like film noir? Anyone know any really good noir flicks? I'd love any information you guys have on this genre..or tonal style of films. Any sort of discussion..:)

Double Indemnity
The Maltese Falcon The Big Sleep Sunset Blvd. The Killing (this is an early Kubrick film ) In a Lonely Place (Bogart... not as you'd expect him) Laura The Postman Always Rings Twice The Woman In the Window The Third Man Kiss Me Deadly Mildred Pierce Panic In the Streets (Miss ellie when she was young) Ride the Pink Horse I love 'film noir' because the 'hero' of the film is usually flawed and makes them seem more real -- plus the dialog is much more hard bitten... and the movie doesn't always have a happy ending... I'm sure the lovely Charlatan will add oodles of movies to the list - but above are some of my favorites... |
The "Official" Bill O'Rights Film-Noir recommended viewing list
(I'll bring the popcorn) The Maltese Falcon (1941) I Wake Up Screaming (1941) Behind Green Lights (1946) The Mark Of The Whistler (1944) Brass Monkey (1948) Obsession (1949) The Big Sleep (1946) Having A Wonderful Crime (1945) A Scandal In Paris (1946) [edit] Bogart and Bacall my ass. He should've held out for Carole Landis. |
If you have TCM (Chan 132 on my Dish Network) Sunset Blvd. is coming on Tues. Jan. 10th at 8pm Eastern. The Big Sleep on Wed. Jan. 11th at 10pm eastern.
I just finished watching Gilda with Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth. The Narration and dialog was great but I didn't like the characters and the ending was lackluster. It felt like the film just kept building up, building up, only to fizzle out with a sappy ending. |
