Gilda should be a teacher. ;)

Hmm, no one has commented on this thread in a while..

But can you believe it, this movie FINALLY came to my podunk semi-conservative college town (thought they would never bring it, jeez) LAST WEEK... so we all went out to see it. I really liked it, and the theaters have been packing out for every showing, apparently... so I'm not the only one. And damn, I think it was quite well done. Not quite sure if it's Movie of the Year material, but it's pretty high up there... I think it should get an award just for taking a massive risk and running with it.

I also do not understand the fear that many TFP'ers have been expressing on this thread about seeing "man on man" sex... WTF? The scene was nothing, and I have seen FAR more explicit and even offensive hetero scenes on mainstream Hollywood movies. This was nothing like that... sure, it might be jolting to see something so unorthodox while surrounded by 500 strangers, but that's what going to the movies is all about. That has nothing to do with the quality of the film and everything to do with how comfortable you are with yourself and the sexuality of others. Get over the fear, people... it ain't doin' no one any good.

I was hesitant to see it, but I finally got overwhelmed by all the talk about it. I've been a pretty big Ang Lee fan since I saw the Ice Storm. The interesting thing I've found about the "controversy" surrounding the film is that there are films released dipicting homosexual love stories all the time, but when one of those movies intrudes on the ultra-masculine world of cowboys it becomes intolerable to a certain people. I didn't hear such a fuss over Capote depicting a gay author.

It was easily one of the best films of the year. The editing and advancement of the narrative was amazing, Heath Ledger was great, and the way the story was revealed was in such a subtle and well-crafted manner. There were about 30 seconds where I wasn't sure where the plot was going and then spoiler: Spoiler: you find out Jack is dead.

I'd be surprised if it didn't win many of the Oscars it's been nominated for, especially best directing, best actor. I've only seen one of the other pictures nominated for best film and that was the extremely mediocre Crash so I'd say it has a good chance of winning that too.

They're already filming a sequal (or is it a prequal) ;)

Score one for bigotry!

Seriously, we saw Brokeback Mountain this week, and it's a clear contender for the Oscar. Heath Ledger (who, frankly, after the jousting movie, I had written off) delivers an amazing performance. Jake Gyllenhaal does too, although that wasn't such a surprise. Totally amazing film.

Hey, Rudel73: there's boobies. There's a whole BUNCH more female nudity in this film than male nudity. I suggest the Pup Tent Rule: every time Heath Ledger goes into a tent, just go to the bathroom for five minutes, and you'll be fine.

I might have to go to the bathroom, but for an entirely different reason... mrowl! :)

My boss just saw this, and loved it. Cried through the last 1/3 of the movie. And she's not exactly hip to the gay culture, by any stretch. I was really impressed with her, because she thinks seeing men (or women) getting intimate on screen is icky. But she completely related to the star-crossed lovers thing. That really impressed me - she saw past the parts she didn't understand to the underlying universal theme.
(btw, I love my boss. :p)

Sorry, I'll never see it...And honestly, I'm not really sure that it'll even show in many theatres in Mississippi lol....I know quite a few towns actually have petitions against its showing...

Yeah the girl from Dawson's Creek's boobies no less! I've had the exact same arc as you w/r/t Heath Ledger. For me though I started not hating him because of the Brothers Grimm, not a good movie, but he was pretty good in it.
