Arrested Development episode order reduced again. Cancellation on horizon?
Crap!!!
From Variety.com: Quote:
My one hope is that a deal might be made for another network to pick it up and continue the show. Previous thread about this happening last season: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=83148

Networks Cancel 'Arrested Development,' '7th Heaven'
By Nellie Andreeva, Reuters FOX Critical support and a rabid fan base had bought 'Arrested Development' more time on the air. Catch Them While They're On: · 'Arrested Development' · '7th Heaven' LOS ANGELES (Nov. 11) - The Camdens will bid farewell to viewers in May when the WB Network's top-rated family drama "7th Heaven" ends its run after 10 seasons in what sources said was largely a cost-cutting move. The Bluth clan of Fox's ratings-challenged "Arrested Development" is also headed for the exit after Fox cut the third-season order on the Emmy-winning comedy to 13 episodes. Also getting the ax at Fox is "Arrested's" companion on Monday, the freshman comedy "Kitchen Confidential," whose order will not be extended beyond the initial 13 episodes. "7th Heaven," whose debut on August 26, 1996, marked the first-ever Monday broadcast of the then-fledging WB Network, will bow out as the longest-running family drama on television. After 10 seasons, the show is still a top draw for WB, averaging 5.1 million viewers this season to date. Creatively, the show also will go out in style, creator Brenda Hampton said. "I think this is the best season we've ever had, and we're planning a very exciting and heartwarming conclusion to the series," she said. "On the show, we talk about choosing your feelings, and we chose to feel happy and blessed to have been on the air for so long." There is talk about a potential "7th Heaven" spinoff, but Hampton admits that would be hard to do. "('7th Heaven') is a family show," she said. "I think the success of the show is that the family is intact with the mom, the dad and the children, so it is a very difficult show to spin off." Sources indicated that the reasons to take "7th Heaven" off the air were primarily financial. As series age, they get more and more expensive, with the price tag especially high for a show with a large cast like "7th Heaven." The cancellation of the long-running series also comes during a process of extensive cost-cutting across all Warner Bros. divisions. As for the demise of "Arrested," it comes just as the acclaimed comedy came back this week after a hiatus to make room for Fox's baseball coverage. The two back-to-back episodes averaged a paltry 4 million viewers Monday, sending Fox to fifth place in the 8 p.m. hour and putting a dent on the ratings of its lead-out, the rookie drama "Prison Break." There is a possibility that the show will be shopped around, but its high cost is expected to be prohibitive for a cable network. Fox said Thursday that it will pull "Arrested Development" and "Kitchen Confidential" off the schedule for the remaining three Mondays of the November sweep, replacing them with a rerun of the previous episode of "Prison Break" leading into an original episode of the serialized drama. "Arrested" and "Kitchen" are set to return to their time slots with original episodes December 5, following the fall finale of "Prison Break" on November 28. IM SO PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW! |

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. maybe, just maybe (im no marketing genius), if you didnt put kitchen/arrested in the monday night time slot, along with the FUCKING BASEBALL PLAYOFFS, not play it for three weeks, then give it no advertising, YOU WOULDNT RUN IN TO THIS PROBLEM. but by all means, keep nightstalkers on, that show is infinitely better.
fucking idiots.

I really can't understand how well-paid "professionals" at Fox can't find a way to market one of the best and most beloved comedies of all time. With the quality of the show and the accolades its garnered, you'd think Fox would hype the shit out of it, but I've seen far more advertising for useless reality shows and awful cookie cutter sitcoms that don't have nearly the amount of talent or quality that Arrested Development has.
I really wonder what kind of effect DVDs and Tivo have had on shows like AD. I mean, it's pretty much widely considered to be a fantastic and hilarious show, but it's not exactly water cooler material for most people. And with the ability to record it for later or just wait for the DVD, I assume most people just miss it when it airs because they don't need to know exactly who did what or who got dumped and who got fired, etc., for the next day's discussions at work/school.

You knew this show was doomed when they dumped it in favor of "The War at Home" on Sunday nights.
I think the Simpsons/Family Guy/American Dad crowd would eventually (if they hadn't already) get behind Arrested Development. Instead we get cookie cutter, generic-ass, not even remotely funny fluff.

I watched one episode and dismissed it, but once I got tivo I gave it another try. I've been addicted ever since.
I hate fox so much. It's too bad that Arrested probrablly can pull off a Familly Guy. BTW I second guthmund's sentiments about the witty, animated comedy crowd warming up to the show. |

Fox just makes me feel tired all over. I happened to catch part of the first and all of the second episode on Monday, purely by accident- I didn't see any advertisements about it being back, and here in N.O. there isn't really any source of TV listings you can check in advance yet. As it's been said, maybe they'd have more success with ratings if they'd stop hopscotching it all over the schedule.

Rupert Murdoch really is a billionaire tyrant...
A pox on Fox is all I have to say... I mean, leaving Seventh Heaven on air for ten dubious seasons of sugary sappiness was insult enough. But then to consistently kill off quality programming in its prime time and time again is really too much... Futurama was just hitting its stride, picking up the slack as The Simpsons began to run into creative limits when the big axe came mercilessly down. Despite massive DVD sales, the show is probably lost to us forever... Fans obviously wised up the Fox's love of cutting their favourite shit and were ready when Rupert & co had a hack at the Family Guy, but lost their nerve in the face of the hordes of fans... Now Arrested Development, probably the first decent, misanthropic sitcom that had me doing anything more than throwing objects at Ted Danson's withering, yet incredibly unfunny antics and passing my spare time perfecting my Ray Romano voodoo doll (anyone got a lock of Ray's hair btw, I'm working off the classic 'Monkey Island' technique), and they cut that too... We in Australia have to wait some time for the American shows to make their way down under. Usually we're a season behind (don't tell me what's happening in Lost, I want to be frustrated and exploited by their manipulative writing later), and the best stuff comes on in the dead of night. I discovered Arrested, nestled away in its 11.30 timeslot some time in the middle of last year. Now it looks like season 2 and 3 won't even get a look in on the tele before proceeding directly to DVD. Similar things appear to be in store for the likes of Deadwood, American Dad, Family Guy and so forth... On the other hand, we also get the most inane and ridiculous tripe served in primetime year after year. The cycle is sickening in its consistent predictability. Ray and Frasier (well, not bad, but not great) dominate the ratings period, before a horrible Summer of offal that deserves to be buried and never spoken of again. The stars are always washed up, old or totally drug fucked losers, such as the inimitable Charlie Sheen, who decided to hang up his badarse acting days from Platoon, and even his own self parodies in Ferris Bueller or Hotshots, and team up with some stupid kid and lumbering cadaver in '2 and a half men'. Who can forget the hilarity of 3rd generation Cosby show ripoffs, post 'Hanging with Mr Cooper', as one of the Wayan's brothers dons the blustering patriarch act and proceeds to berate his children and recieve stare after withering stare from his assertive wife, oh when will the laughter stop? Isn't it great to see Matt Le Blanc really moving past Friends, or wait a second, maybe to a new city where he can continue to be a complete dick and remind us all why he was out acted by a chimp in that delightful 'ape plays baseball movie'. With the state of most of the locally produced Australian shows, basically The Simpsons is one of the only consistent consolations in a desolate hell of television programming which aims for the blandest patch of grey it can find to avoid niche markets... Ok, I feel a little better now, but that's only because I have my precious DVD's... |

I'm not sure how much it will help, but it only took a second and doesn't hurt to try. The site is actually associated with Fox, so maybe flooding the hell out of it with signatures can do a lot more good than other online petitions. Hopefully the show can somehow pull off an 11th hour reprieve.

hey,
thanks for the getarrested link. Since the site is actually under the watch of Fox, they actually might pay attention to this, unlike those petitiononline.com things..... I admit, I've only seen A.D. no more than a half-dozen times, but when I can, I try to catch the damn show. [I'm busy in college, for pete's sakes, don't watch much tv, but when I do, AD is near the top of the list]. Plus, the whole methodology of capturing Nielsen ratings is flawed and in need of a major revamping. New York Times' sunday magazine did a really good article on it, in July, I believe. Why are the ratings so high for such crap on TV now ? Well, the people watching such dribble have nothing else more intellectually stimulating to do. The common perception among the younger generation is that TV, by definition is pretty much crap, save for the few shows like AD and some other stuff we history channel, pbs, and maybe another show or two...And honestly, I don't have time to watch TV (Nor do I make time for it - it's usually anti-social activity). The only TV show I watch on a regular basis is Law and order the svu one, taking place among a group of 7 or so of us; [plus cuddling with girls down the hall] ... Also, an episode or two during a week of simpsons, which the roomie has on dvd. Alas, that's the end of my diatribe against television. I'd write more, but I got better and more important things to do [than tv]. *working on his 10 pg. philosophy paper, on language of thought hypothesis* cya, will.

It will be a shame to lose arested development after so little time. I do believe it is a show that you must watch over time and this has led to it's downfall. perhaps if the interest is there some other network will pick it up but that will take a large outcry from the fans.

Where did you hear that rumor? If this ends up true, I'll be very excited. Not that they need any more to add to the show, but with all that extra freedom, it may end up becoming even more hilarious.

To bad Fox is going to cancel one of the best to come down the turnpike in a long time all because of ratings. I guess it's timet to add the fourth notch to my list of cancelled Fox shows I liked: Sliders, John Doe, Firefly & now Arrested Development. I'd include Family Guy on this list but they're back on the air now.

In all honesty, if Fox ends up making the monumental mistake of ending AD, I wish they would have kept their resurrection for this show instead of bringing back Family Guy. Of all the new episodes, I've really disliked all but maybe one or two. But, Arrested Development really seems like they haven't even gotten to get the ball really rolling on all the things they can do with this cast and these writers. It's by far one of the funniest and most inventive comedies I've ever seen.

Don't hold your breath expecting this to work out, but I just read that Arrested Development "producer Brian Grazer told CNN last week that he is working feverishly to move the sitcom to another home". Even though I and many other fans have suggested that they should move it to another network, I was worried that the powers-that-be were just dealing with the fact that they were being cancelled and weren't even fighting to keep it alive. It's a little bit reassuring to read that they're at least trying to keep the show alive by getting it moved somewhere else.
I read it at the end of this story on Yahoo! news: Quote:

I read an article the other day (and I'll certainly try to find it again) that said Showtime would love to pick up the series, but the notion of paying that much money to keep the sitcom going (salaries of Bateman, Portia De Rossi, Tambor and the like) would make it much less likely that they could pick up the series.
As much as I would love to see this show on a network with 'no boundaries' as it were, I can't imagine Fox is going to let this go easily. I mean, how long did it take for Universal and Joss Whedon to wriggle the agreement to show Firefly on Scifi and movie rights to Serentiy out of Fox' hands even though they had no immediate plans for the show?
