Veronica Mars- the best show ever!

Hey forum,
I thought I would hearld my return to the boards with a wonderful thread about my new favorite show- Veronica Mars. I was a bit into it last year, when I could catch it, but this year I'm so totaly hooked. What is not to love about this show? It's funny, suspenseful, smart with some of the best characters on prime time this century. The cast is amazing, the scripts phenomenal and the guest stars suprising and entertaining. I was just wondering if anyone else is as huge fan of this show as I am (ok maybe not as fanatical as me but close.) Plus I thought we could talk about the episodes like did anyone see what Keith found on the bus at the end?

kinda funny isn't it - replying to a thread a few months after its start.

Anyway, I'm with you on this show. I was perusing a firefly forum late last year and saw that Joss Whedon says this is his favourite show - that piqued my interest and I ummm acquired the first episode (of season 1).

Well, I was hooked. Of course the local FTA station that has the rights in Oz advertised this like it was another OC or Beverley Hills 90210, and only played about 5 episodes before wondering why their briiliant ads hadn't brought any viewers. Thus it was put back on a shelf and replaced with simpsons re-runs.

I see that I am digressing, so back to the show at hand.

You know you are really hooked on a show when on the day/evening it plays in the US, you keep refreshing your favourite torrent site to see if the episode is up :)

The kinda funny thing - in the first season, they always moved the main mystery on each week (i.e. who killed Lily). In the second series it is not obvious sometimes that what they are doing in an episode relates back to the bus crash - still engrossed and finding season 2 better that season 1.

shoegirl 04-07-2006 06:29 AM

I actually caught an episode of this show a few months ago, there wasn't anything else on tv, and I fully expected that I wouldn't like it. Dead wrong. Love, love, love this show. Watched all of season 1 and now I'm all caught up on season 2 (minus this week's episode, haven't gotten to watch it yet). Any theories about who caused the bus crash? I'm willing to bet that Woody Goodman had something to do with it...

meepa 04-07-2006 08:42 AM

I've seen this show a few times. I thought it would be silly but it actually is pretty witty, and Kristen Bell does a really good job. Unfortunately since it's one of those shows where the plot actually strings together from episode to episode, I found myself not getting hooked in by just watching when I remembered to. One of these days I'll probably begin renting the seasons from the start.

guy44 04-07-2006 04:09 PM

I hate describing the show because it sounds so goddam stupid. Nancy Drew meets pretty teen drama. Uh, huh. But the show is just brilliant. Great characters, great stories, fantastic mysteries, sharp writing, well-played story arcs, the show has everything. It has really picked up the Joss Whedon baton. Now if I could just get everyone I know to watch it...

My money would be on Woody - maybe hooked in with the fitzpatrick's to have blown up the bus. But I was way off on Lily's murder so, probably best not to ask me :)

guy44 04-10-2006 03:33 PM

Actually, spindles, that's my guess as well, and has been for 7 or 8 episodes. We'll see - so far, the show has a proven track record of throwing out a lot of red herrings but giving you an alternate - but believeable - truth.

And I don't mean to say the show is "Nancy Drew meets pretty teen drama," but rather that it is very hard to describe to other people without saying something like that.

spindles 04-23-2006 07:40 PM

Well, I'm wondering if we are close enough to the end of season for them to really start to make it a bit clearer. After E19, Kendall is now looking pretty guilty, which means ir can't be her :)

shoegirl 04-23-2006 08:36 PM

I'm still thinking it's Woody - working with the Fitzpatricks, of course. I think an episode or so back, it was mentioned that there was going to be the 'outing of all outings'. I'm wondering if that also has something to do with Woody as well. Someone found out he's really gay, he blows that kid up on the bus. Who knows?

I would say Kendall is looking pretty fine!

Clearly it's Wallace. Thats why he really left. Laying low... With Veronica out of the way, he'd be the star of the show.

thesupermikey 04-27-2006 07:25 PM

Veronica Mars is the best non-Galactica show on the air right now

im not sure about the bus crash,
i do know that Logan and V's scenes at the end of this weeks episode made be ball my eyes out. much like when Oz left Willow.

Damn straight, thesupermikey. You have no idea how strenously and futilely I've struggled to explain to people that the two best shows on TV are about a spaceship called Galactica and a teenage detective. At least I'm not the only one!

P.S. Plus, a bonus Joss reference. I think our tastes might actually share some sort of physical cooexistence or something.

P.P.S. I cannot describe just how hard it is to convince someone that the smartest, most insightful television commentary on the post - 9/11 world is Battlestar Galactica. Apparantly, nobody can believe a space opera has more to say on the topic than all the talking heads combined. Huh.

best way to explain - show them the pilot

Yeah, funny you should mention, that's how I got my cynical brother to become just as obsessed with Veronica Mars and Battlestar Galactica as I am.

And, incidentally, Firefly as well.

Let's just say that right now I have an unusually high cachet with my brother when it comes to television recommendations.

spindles 04-30-2006 08:41 PM

Well, episode 20 was a doozy. I'm leaning towards the following:
1. Woody is gay (he was going to be the "outing of all outings"
2. he abused Lucky as a kid
3. he is also one of the fitzpatrick's "high end" users.

4. he got them to blow up the bus to keep the gay kid quiet.

5. Kendall is a red herring.

1-2) maybe - he may be a sex problem all the way around, perhaps something more widespread (The Mannings Abuse of Grace, maybe Meg and the other sister) Lamb (?), and the first kid V. Baby-Sat for

3) Maybe, but if V and Weevle went though all the numbers on the cutting board than she would know about that. I think the fitzpatrick connecting is more realated to Woody trying to blackmain Terrence

4) Maybe, but do we know enough about him to connect him to the Woody (im going to call this a red herring)

5) to close to call

I finally saw this past episode. While, I didn't bawl my eyes out, it was definitely difficult to watch. Logan finally says exactly what everyone's been waiting for (okay, what I've been waiting for) and then for it to end up how it did, well that's just rough. I'll be very interested to see what happens this week.

And Spindles, I think you're pretty dead on with your guesses. Only a couple episodes left, so it should all tie together pretty soon!

guy44 05-01-2006 06:13 PM

I gotta say, I think there's a weird religious thing going on that will make itself known in these last two episodes. Maybe tied in to Woody being gay, maybe having to do with Woody harrassing the gay kid who died (or even Lucky the janitor). The religious thing was brought up with Meg's parents, with Sheriff Lamb, the bizarre way Woody's wife treated his son so harshly. Even if this is just a red herring, I really hope they don't drop this thread, because it's intriguing and I at least want to know what's going on.

Something tells me the Fitzpatricks aren't connected, at least directly, to Woody if only because then they'd be behind damn near everything this season - Terrence's blackmail by Lamb, Thumper taking over the PCHers, Kendall's scheming, framing Logan for murder...etc. Hell, I'll bet that Aaron Echols' jailhouse cellmate who arranged the robbery of the Logan legal papers from Cliff is a Fitzpatrick.

So it'd be kinda disappointing if the Fitzpatricks were also connected to Woody and/or behind the bus crash somehow.

spindles 05-05-2006 07:03 PM

Well Woddy has done a runner - and he is obviously guilty of sexual assault on the kids (two of whom were on the bus). I really want to know how beaver fits into this - I'm guessing he was also on Woody's little league team.

No real surprise to see Aaron get off on the lily Kane murder - neither veronica or keith were particularly good on the witness stand.

Who blew up the bus - I'm still no closer to knowing...

guy44 05-06-2006 09:59 PM

Yeah I still don't have any idea where the season finale is going. I'm dying to find out - it even kills me that I'll have to wait a little while because I have White Sox tickets for Tuesday night.

I'm curious where the third season - God willing, it'll be following Gilmore Girls or something on the CW - is going. I figure she's obviously going to Hearst, as Wallace will be there, the admissions lady likes her, and it's in Neptune. I also wonder if there'll be another season-ending cliffhanger...

shoegirl 05-07-2006 10:42 AM

I never thought about Beaver being on Woody's little league team - sure would explain a few things. And I hate that Aaron was found not guilty - wonder what he'll be up to next. I'm guessing he and Kendall are up to no good...

As far as the third season, I just read this: "Rob Thomas has big plans for season three. "We're going to do away with the season-long mystery and, instead, go with three long mysteries. Our first mystery would be eight episodes long, and the nice thing about it is that we give the audience more jumping-in points." In episode 16, the first mystery will introduce the rapist, who shaves women's heads, which Thomas says "allows us to keep some characters we've grown to love on the show." I also read that they want to make Tina Marjorino (Mac) a regular next season. I assume Veronica will end up at Hearst with Wallace and Mac. Don't know who else will come back - I don't see how Weevil will fit in, or Dick or Beaver for that matter. I assume Logan will be around, but again, don't know how he'll fit in.

guy44 05-07-2006 01:44 PM

I think it's a good idea to go with three medium-sized mysteries rather than one large season-long one. I mean, is some disastrous who-dunnit going to happen to Veronica every fall for the rest of her life? I really hope that there's going to be future seasons...

spindles 05-07-2006 03:46 PM

Well, Veronica skipped out on the last exam to go to the verdict hearing, so there goes the Kane scholarship, so Stamford?? (or whichever uni she got into) is out... That points her back at Hearst.

edit - also what is the significance of the scratching/message on beaver's car?

thesupermikey 05-07-2006 04:50 PM

Quote:

also? the kid with Beave we have never seen before. with i something that i find more interesting. They Keyer could of just got the wrong car. But the kid with beav, he was strange.

spindles 05-08-2006 04:33 PM

by 'also' I was showing this was an afterthought to my previous note (maybe redundant because I already said 'edit' :)).

Must say I didn't notice the kid with beaver - I just assumed he was an 'extra' and not really relevant to the story.

thesupermikey 05-08-2006 06:23 PM

turns out the kid with Beav is the kid who video taped Mrs Eckles jumping off the bridge WAY back in season 1.

so thats what the whole "I can keep a secret" deal was all about.

Ah, that's what I thought but I wasn't sure.

Yeah, I can't wait.

spindles 05-09-2006 05:58 PM

It's alright for you guys - I have to wait for the alternative distribution method to kick in - bloody crap local TV station. Cmon channel BT.

thesupermikey 05-09-2006 06:25 PM

so does that mean you want us to stay way from spoilers?

spindles 05-09-2006 06:35 PM

no fire away - i'll avoid the thread until I watch it

guy44 05-09-2006 09:25 PM

Wow! I can't believe Veronica caused the crash!

(Kidding.)

spindles 05-10-2006 04:05 PM

well - they tied in nicely the chlamydia thing, they made sure steve guttenberg and harry hamlin can't possibly get a start in any season 3, they've left Logan able to live his "rich boy" lifestyle and they nicely answered the "who blew up the bus" question.

Rob Thomas has said they have hinted about the season 3 mystery. Damn I hate season ends...

Beaver has always seemed a little creepy, so no huge surprises. I was wondering for a few minutes why the would write out Mr Mars (being the *best* character in the show), but that feeling didn't last long...

thesupermikey 05-10-2006 06:41 PM

A bit of info from TV Guide

http://www.tvguide.com/News/Ausiello/AskAusiello/
Quote:

Ausiello: That's the million-dollar question, and one of the few series creator Rob Thomas wouldn't answer. You see, I anticipated that you guys would have tons of questions about the finale, so I got Mr. Mars on the horn yesterday and grilled him for 30 minutes straight about the four-star climax. (There was also some mild gushing, but it was mostly grilling.) Warning: If you haven't seen last night's episode, do not read. Major spoilers throughout.

Ausiello: What's in the briefcase?
Rob Thomas: (Laughs) That one I'm not going to answer.

Ausiello: I knew it was a long shot. Care to shed any light on what Kendall asked Keith to do?
Rob: Um, not really. I really want to keep that a secret. The thing I'll say about it is, it's pressing enough for him to stand up his daughter at the airport. It is desperately important and Keith recognizes that.

Ausiello: So we can assume that he has, in fact, stood her up? Or is there still a chance he might just show up late?
Rob: He has, in fact, stood her up; that I can answer definitively.

Ausiello: Did you ever consider keeping Keith on that plane when it exploded?
Rob: Never. He's the backbone of the show. It's half the reason Veronica is going to Hearst and not Stanford. I couldn't think of a good reason for Keith to move to Palo Alto.

Ausiello: I loved how Duncan referred to Clarence Weidman as CW. I had to stop and think, "Was he always referred to as CW?
Rob: (Laughs) No, it's the first time anyone's called him CW. But his name has always been Clarence Weidman, so… we didn't actually change anything to make that happen. It certainly made the entire writing staff giggle.

Ausiello: Is Cassidy really dead? We didn't see a body.
Rob: Oh, he is dead. They found his crumpled body on the roof of a Ford.

Ausiello: Since Duncan's responsible for Aaron's murder, will that be one of the three mysteries next season?
Rob: No.

Ausiello: But the Hearst rapist story will be one of the three eight-episode arcs, right? (For more on next year's narrative structure, click here.)
Rob: It will be.

Ausiello: So there will be 24 episodes next season?
Rob: No, it'll probably be 8-7-7. And that can shift. I think, ideally, we'll get an 8, 7 and a 7. But when they figure out their schedule it could be a 9, 6 and 7. Nothing is set in stone as far as those exact episode counts go, but they'll be running in three uninterrupted blocks.

Ausiello: Is Weevil really going down for Thumper's murder?
Rob: You won't see a Weevil trial, but he's going to go down for at least an assault. He's going to do some time. The next time we see Weevil, he has done time. But they won't be able to pin the murder on him.

Ausiello: Is Tessa Thompson (Jackie) done with the show?
Rob: She is. I would not hesitate for a second to have her come in to do an arc, but she will not be a series regular.

Ausiello: Might Mac and Veronica be roommates at Hearst next season?
Rob: They will not. It's too valuable for me to have Veronica at home playing scenes with Keith, so she will live off campus. I think both the roommates for Wallace and Mac will end up being, if not series regulars next year, then certainly major long-arc guest stars.

Ausiello: Are you referring to Arrested Development's kissing cousins, George and Maeby (Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat)?
Rob: No, but I'm hoping that we can get both of them. We have Michael Cera in mind for a story line. I already e-mailed Michael saying, "Hey, if you're available in August or September, we'd love to get you." I love both of those actors and I expect and hope that you see both next year, but we won't have them as series regulars.

Ausiello: So these roommate characters will be brand-new?
Rob: Yes. We've broken the first three episodes of Season 3, and Mac's roommate and Wallace's roommate will be major players.

Ausiello: Will Charisma Carpenter (Kendall) be a series regular next season?
Rob: No, she won't be.

Ausiello: Any other cast changes in the works?
Rob: It's in the negotiation stage to make Sheriff Lamb (Michael Muhney) and Mac (Tina Majorino) series regulars. But that's pending a deal happening.

Ausiello: And Teddy Dunn?
Rob: He's done.

Ausiello: What's the latest you're hearing about a third season?
Rob: I've been saying for the last couple of months that I think it's 80/20 that we'll be back and nothing has really gone on to change that opinion for me.

Ausiello: When will you find out?
Rob: I don't think I'll find out until May 17, which is when they need to put actors on planes to go to the upfronts.

Ausiello: One last question: What has been the reaction to my appearance as Blushing Guy?
Rob: Oh, the fans went crazy. (Laughs) You did a fine, fine job as Blushing Guy.

guy44 05-10-2006 09:42 PM

I figured Jackie was done and that Kendall wouldn't be a regular, but Teddy Dunn being off the show totally was kind of a surprise. I hope he gets brought back for at least one arc.

I think I'll miss Principle Clemmons the most, though...

thesupermikey 05-10-2006 09:47 PM

Dunn has started law school....that is the word that went around the TV w/o Pity Board after he left in 'Donut Run'

Hey, maybe Clemmons is become Dean at Herst! it will be lke boy meets world!

shoegirl 05-11-2006 02:38 PM

Whew. I finally saw the episode! It was all I could do to not read this thread the past couple of days. What a good episode, with only some minor cliffhaning. Woody's out, Aaron's out, and I'm quite interested to see what Kendall's got in that briefcase, something big if Keith is ditching Veronica. And, I'm such a girl, but it's about time Logan and Veronica got back together. :)

guy44 05-16-2006 07:51 PM

My prayers have been answered, Veronica Mars has been picked up for Season 3:

http://community.tvguide.com/thread....02002#comments

Straight from the horse's mouth, Rob Thomas just e-mailed me to confirm that Veronica Mars has been renewed for a third season. The show got a 22-episode order that, depending on ratings, can be reduced to 13. Very reliable sources, meanwhile, are also telling me that One Tree Hill will be back and that Everwood is, in fact, dead. Talk about injustice.
I really, really hope they go for the 22-ep season...
