Bones

I just caught the first episode earlier today, and wanted to know how y'all thought it was. I liked it. The writing could have been better, but I liked the primary actors.

asaris 09-13-2005 06:29 PM

How did you post before I did? Anyway, I'm not sure how different his character here is from Angel. At least, it doesn't seem like that much of a stretch for him.

Fremen 09-13-2005 07:24 PM

The books this series is based on are pretty good.

I liked it so far. I imagined Tempe a little older, but I think Emily Deschanel did a pretty good job.

I'll watch some more eps. to see what happens. :)

Cynthetiq 09-13-2005 08:07 PM

it's going to be watched when we return I believe....

mrklixx 09-13-2005 09:48 PM

I give it a "meh". Wasn't horrible and yet wasn't overly thrilling either. I didn't really give much of a rip about any of the characters. And with shows like CSI you have to suspend disbelief to a certain extent, but I mean you really have to stretch that with this show, with her "the killer was chewing gum and had a tattoo of a monkey on his left thigh" type stuff.

O, and I think they should have used Rush's "Roll The Bones" as the theme song.

onodrim 09-13-2005 11:52 PM

I'll go the wasn't great/wasn't bad crowd. The actors and charactes all show potential to be interesting, but the writing left something to be desired. I understand in a series pilot you need to introduce all the new characters, but a lot of it seemed very forced, like "you need to know this about them, so we're going to interrupt the flow of a scene to put it in there and repeat it a few more times.". I agree with meklixx, they need to keep things a touch more grounded in reality. Overall I'd say I'll watch a few weeks, see how it goes, new series often have a rough beginning and it does have potential.

I never knew it was based on a book series though. That could account for some of the issues with keeping it real, and since I have no knowledge of the books, I'll let that slide for now. :p

I am an avid fan of Kathy Reichs (especially since a lot of her books are set in Montreal, my hometown), and didn't even realize that there was a connection between the books and Bones until I heard the main character's name.

It's a little weird for me to see Tempe being so young (I always pictured her as being in her 40's-50's, as she has a college-aged daughter in the books), but I think the casting was a good choice.

guy44 09-14-2005 05:16 PM

The show was alright, not great. I'll give it some leeway, as it was the pilot and almost every show needs at least a few episodes to settle in.

That said, the show desperately needs a few things changed.

1) The main character, whatever the hell her name is, should not be a gun-wielding, sharpshooting, badass blackbelt. That's just stupid, rediculous, and smacks of "we don't know how to make her look like a strong woman unless she also beats big evil men up" syndrome. Even in CSI, none of the characters are adept at physical combat or gunplay, and they are trained cops.

2) The "backup forensic team" needs to be scaled way back. Every one of them is a shitty stereotype, and really annoying: the conspiracy theorist, the lusty hot computer programmer, the dorky but actually talented young gun whose "secretly" in love with the main character (secret as in obvious in first ever scene, to be developed near the end of season 1, start of season 2, pops up again when she and Boreanaz finally admit they like each other in season 3), etc.

3) Where is this mythical institute they all work at? Where the hell in D.C. or its burbs is there enough room for a huge, well-manicured, uber-expensive institute that wastes space like its nobodies business? That can afford to use huge hangers for one purpose only - this one for the bodies, this one for target practice, etc.? With dozens of world experts who solely work the occasional homocide? Who have holograms that are at least 20 years more advanced than anything reality can offer? It's ludicrous. Do they get a talking car, too?

If they tone down the above stuff, and spend more time on the plots of each case, and rely really, really heavily on the banter/interaction between the two leads - which is the best part of the show by far and quite enjoyable - it'll be ok.

My two cents, anyway.

asaris 09-14-2005 06:46 PM

I'm with you on the holograms, at least. That just seemed like, "Hey, we don't trust our writers or our characters, so we'd better throw in some 'cool' special effects to make this interesting..."

JustJess 09-15-2005 06:11 AM

I guess I'm not that picky... after all, I watch CSI, and clearly no crime scene tech anywhere is going to be interviewing suspects, and most crime labs have to send out for the really good stuff like DNA profiling, and wait for friggin' ever to get things back...

So clearly, I don't have really high standards on this stuff. So yep, I'll take the super cool looking computer hologram thingie cause I like the interaction of the main leads... I'll wait a few episodes before worrying about the tech crew, since this ep was a hell of a lot of explanation and establishing of main drives. They were pretty much hitting us over the head with "this is the Issue that this character must wrestle with". I don't think it's going to change the way I look at, well, anything, but it looks like fun. :)

ophelia783 09-15-2005 09:24 AM

Just remember guys, there's a very big difference between forensic criminology (CSI) and forensic anthropology (Bones).

In fact, there are only about 45-50 forensic anthropologists in North America!

guthmund 09-15-2005 07:24 PM

I'm okay with suspending belief for a while. /shrugs

I like the books, I'm sure I'll like the show. The story could've used a bit more work, but I thought they pulled it off pretty good. Besides...it's Angel...freakin' Angel. :)

n0nsensical 09-15-2005 07:28 PM

Did anyone else think this thread was going to be about a movie starring Snoop Dogg?

MPower 09-16-2005 09:17 AM

Maybe they will have an episode where the hologram tries to take over the building.

Charlatan 09-28-2005 05:56 AM

So far, two episodes watched, I am still on the fence but starting to warm to the characters.

I think the biggest problem for me is that while I like the characters, I don't love the plots. They seem just a little warmed over.

mr sticky 09-28-2005 12:55 PM

I like the characters, but there is a wealth of information that is presentable to the layperson. I just wish they would let go some of that smoke and mirrors sci-fi stuff and challenge the viewers with some science.
I think this would garner a much higher following.
