Best cameo appearances

In movies. Cameo can mean, in this case, a small role in a film played by a relatively big star.

Just to get the ball rolling...

Hank Azaria - Along Came Polly
Will Ferrell - Starsky And Hutch
Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, Steven Spieldberg - Austin Powers In Goldmember
Hank Azaria - Dodgeball
Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson - Anchorman
Jason Statham - Collateral
Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, Gary Busey, Flea, Tobey Maguire - Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Flea - Back To The Future I and II
Patrick Swayze - Donnie Darko (extended cameo?)
David Hasselhoff - The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie
Jason Biggs - Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back

It's difficult in artistic endeavours to rate things objectively against one another, but if anyone can beat Sean Connery's cameo at the end of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, I'll eat my own head!

And don't say the movie sucked. That proves the point even further, because Connery's cameo is that much better because it elevated the end of a mediocre movie!

I laughed out loud when the camera slowly paned past Brad Pitt and Matt Damon to focus on the total dweeb doing all the talking and winning the heart of the girl during a taping of The Dating Game in “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”.

Hate to say it, but by my definition of "cameo", very few of the ones listed actually qualify. A cameo is a very small part (ie one scene, often not even speaking) that is usually uncredited.

For instance:

Robin Williams as the mime instructor in "Shakes the Clown"
Most Albert Hitchcock cameos (he would often just be in the background somewhere)
Peter Jackson as a hobbit in Fellowship of the Ring.

etc.

The cameos in Anchorman were the best. That fight scene had me laughing harder than anything else.

Quote:
Ron Burgundy: Boy, that escalated quickly... I mean, that really got out of hand fast!
Champ Kind: It jumped up a notch!
Ron Burgundy: It did, didn't it?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, I stabbed a man in the heart!
Ron Burgundy: I saw that! Brick killed a guy! Did you throw a trident?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident!
Ron Burgundy: Brick, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder
One of my other favorites is Jay & Silent Bob showing up in Scream 3.

Dana Carvey in This is Spinal Tap. This might not qualify, as I don't suspect he was famous at the time. Think of it as a retro-active cameo.

Yes, but again, I wouldn't call Schaffer's role a "cameo". He was in more than one scene and had a good deal of dialogue. To me, a cameo is very brief and usually uncredited. The opening scene to Goldmember is what I'm talking about.

The examples given by everyone here seem to fit in with the ones given by lindalove, who started this thread. So please stop trying to tell everyone what your definition of a cameo is, and just join in the fun. If this topic doesn't cut it for you, there are plenty of alternatives on this board, one of which I'm sure would meet your standards.

While I believe that rude comment edited out is the wrong choice of words on this board, Derwood wasn't trying to impose his definition on anyone else. Besides, I think a little discussion of what a cameo appearance is fits well into this thread.

A cameo isn't really an integral part of the cast anyway, so he was right.

Dictionary.com - A brief appearance of a prominent actor, as in a single scene of a motion picture.

in kikilidstroms defense I think what they were getting out was the repeating of "his" definition and that the first time he said it was good enuff.

(and I cant find any definition that includes the fact that a cameo is uncredited, maybe Im just not looking in the right place)
