Criss Angel's Mindfreak

Criss Angel put out a show on A&E. I saw the first 2 and I've got to admit some of the stuff he does it amazing.

In one of the episodes he focused on levatating somebody in the middle of Fremont St. in Vegas. It was rather impressive.

Anybody seen it yet?

ShaniFaye 07-26-2005 01:44 PM

I taped last weeks premier but I havent been able to watch it yet.....he's a hottie lol

I don't know about the show...it's kind of hit or miss with me.

I mean, the voodoo doll thing was completely stupid, so, I didn't watch too much of that.

However, the trick with the garbage can he did was pretty impressive. As was the levitating trick you mentioned.

I guess the big question is...anybody know how he did it?

Cynthetiq 07-26-2005 08:18 PM

I know him personally, he and I used to bump into each other at the Hicksville LIRR Train station. I've also had the pleasure of meeting him at Tannen's in NYC one of the oldest and largest magic shop in the world. I have to get ahold of his leather artisan. Some of the items he has are really nice quality leathers. I just need to save up the duckets.

He is a really nice man. I've seen his Mindfreak show on Broadway a couple years ago.

I have the shows on the Tivo so I'll get to them soon enough.

Mr. Spacemonkey 07-26-2005 09:11 PM

I've seen it. I was skeptical about it after I saw the first episode (or the first one I saw), as all he seemed to be doing was the levitation stuff. The first episode seemed dedicated to that. As amazing as the levitation tricks were, I was starting to wonder if that was all he could do. But after seeing if the second episode, the man can definitely pull off a lot of really amazing illusions. The trick with the ring I thought was really impressive.

I did not know that you liked him. They handed out luggage tags at Bryant Park where he was doing a stunt.

I had them in my bag at the airport and didn't think of giving it to you.

Whaaa? I thought it was pretty cool how he just started bleeding right where they poked him.

Bacchanal 07-27-2005 07:23 AM

Weird.

I was talking to my mom yesterday, and she kept telling me that I absolutely needed to see this show. I've not heard anything about it at all except her endorsement, and now this thread. I guess I'll have to look into it.

Really?!? With the burning and the poking and the BLEED-ing

I don't know, I mean, this guy was making people float, he was levitating cards off the ground and disappearing from under heavily guarded garbage bins...the little voodoo stunt just seemed a bit amateurish in comparison.

Ahh I see, compared to his other stunts it sucked ass...I could agree with that, but cool nonetheless...

ShaniFaye 07-29-2005 05:01 AM

I finally watched the two premier episodes (was waiting for dave to get back in town so we could watch them together) I was blown away...not only is he an immense hottie and VERY pleasing to look at....his tricks blew me away.

When he showed up as one of the extinguisher guys after he'd been on fire...oh man that was awesome!!!

I will def be watching this show on a regular basis

trickyy 07-29-2005 12:09 PM

this show is so ridiculous it might very well be worth watching. we start with a nu metal theme song, sung by chris (assisted by korn?). erm, criss. then he ventures out to the street for some blaine-style magic with bystanders, all while dressed like a crue roadie. he goes under a garbage can, there are 4 cuts, they flip the can over, he reappears above a storefront.

i have a few ideas how he did this, but the editing renders them somewhat unnecessary. i only saw one other trick (with the frisbee) and it was surrounded by many cuts that made the trick more spectacular. although his image rubs me a little goofy, magic on tv shouldn't be video chop suey. and herein lies the entertainment factor.

guthmund 07-29-2005 12:09 PM

I watched two new episodes the other night. The big Houdini trick and the H2/fakir trick.

Little too melodramatic for my taste, but, wow, he does do some amazing stuff.

His 'deja vu' trick (in the hotel with the two couples...) was really....really cool.

Anybody see the card trick on the bus? I read on the internet how they do it, but that would seem neigh impossible on a moving bus.

By the way, that old guy with the perfect jet black hair that hangs around Criss was on Penn & Teller's Bullshit a few episodes back when they were discussing hair. Seems that fellow's perfect jet black hair is really an elaborate comb over. I don't know why I mentioned that other than I think it's kind of funny.

Mr. Spacemonkey 07-29-2005 01:23 PM

I saw the new episodes on wednesday. It's only getting better. One thing I really like about the show is how Angel incorporates real physical challenges into the show such as lying on the bed of nails and the homage to Houdini type of thing he did with escaping from the barrel.

I also thought the card trick he did in the bus was really nice. David Blaine did a similar trick but the fact that Angel did it on a moving bus was amazing. I like Blaine and all but Angel shows the fact that he has more experience and makes Blaine look like an amateur compared to him.

Bacchanal 07-31-2005 10:49 AM

I caught those same episodes Wednesday. The show isn't bad, but I really don't like that everything he does through out the episode "lead up" to his big finale.

Also the editing really pisses me off. I'd be so much more interested if it didn't have to show every single angle every time he does something, to me that makes it look fake.

I guess I'll just see it this Wednesday and see if I like it any more or less...

OhFuchsia 07-31-2005 07:49 PM

Did anyone see in an older episode his scaled the side of this building i mean he was literally walking up it, how is that even possible. I want to know how he does it.

mrklixx 08-04-2005 06:57 PM

The first episode I've gotten to see is the "wine barrel" episode, and I have a couple of thoughts about it. First off I once read an interview with Chris where he said that he hated cheesy magicians like Copperfield, and yet he is friends with and has a "guest appearance" by Lance Burton, who is the Emporer of Cheese.

Second, the water/beer trick was crazy simple and easily spotted.

I decided to skip the "Hanging by Skin" episode entirely. I know alot of people here are into the whole piercing/torture/S&M thing, but it's just not something I wanted to watch for a half an hour.

I had it on in the background and I can tell you that you didn't miss much.

Was there ever really any danger? It looked like he had wires hanging down into his pants. I assume they were there in case the plugs in his back ripped out? When it was done, he called his mom to tell her he was okay...

I think someone should send a dictionary with the words 'magic' and 'trick' highlighted. Maybe then Criss "boring my ass off with his fetish" Angel would realize what it is he's supposed to be doing.

Mr. Spacemonkey 08-04-2005 09:30 PM

I saw the episode last night and it was a bit disappointing as there weren't any magic tricks in the particular episode.

You've watched the previous episodes and you saw that he's performed a variety of magic tricks in them. But yes, there were exactly zero in that particular episode which was disappointing.

Criss has actually been a professional magician for many years and has performed over 600 live shows. He's not just a product of television like Blaine, he worked his ass off. And for that, I respect him quite a bit.

FngKestrel 08-05-2005 12:02 AM

I saw the deja vu trick and that made my jaw drop. He's got good ability, I could do without the whole, "anyone can do what I do as long as they believe" hoodoo. Especially since it comes after the "don't do these tricks" disclaimer.

And here I thought they gave him a show because of his awesome singing...

Relax a bit would you? I was being facetious. I've been a casual fan of Angel's ever since I saw him on some cheap-ass magic special on A&E that I think...I think, was hosted by Harry Anderson.

The bottom line is if he wanted to shock me, do some magic. There are plenty of ways to see people pierce, tatoo, scar and beat themselves, but very few really entertaining magicians to watch.

lol. Well he does actually make music doesn't he ... but I've never listened to it so for all I know he sucks. Anyway yeah, I think the magic is more entertaining than the piercing/torture stuff too.

chelsea_9 08-08-2005 09:13 PM

more like chris angel's mind SUCK!

ahh, just my opinion... but i think he is too hyped, and turned his talents into a complete gimmick.

and whats with him recording a "song" with korn? and.. the carnie-type people that aimlessly walk around the desert with him in between segments?

trickyy 08-08-2005 10:03 PM

^dang, sounds like i really need to watch it again.

harry anderson! somehow that guy hosted every corny magic show on tv from the mid-80s on.

speaking of dictionaries, you should look up "mindfreak," guthmund! pay careful attention to the 4th definition.

"mindfreak" is a word? I checked four on-line dictionaries and one hard cover copy and they're not giving up any secrets...

Care to share?

ShaniFaye 08-09-2005 06:07 AM

I have to say I've been kind of disappointed in the last few shows.....the stunts are ok but not really what I want to see....I want to see magic/illusion stuff not death defying stunts

I think he is probably making reference to the opening of the show where it shows mindfreak in a "dictionary". Never really paid any attention to the "definitions" though.

Mr. Spacemonkey 08-09-2005 12:07 PM

Yeah, mindfreak isn't a real word and you won't find it in probably any dictionary. It's just some word Criss made up because of him freaking out people's minds with all the crazy shit he does. But this is the definition that they give at the beginning of the show:

Mindfreak (Mind “freak”)
n 1:Modern day mystifier who utilizes skills beyond the category of magic. 2:the result of something incomprehensible. 3:supernatural. 4:Criss Angel.

trickyy 08-09-2005 01:12 PM

Ahhhh, I see...

Nope. Entirely my fault.

I've never paid any attention to the opening of the show. The singing usually drives me to the kitchen for something to drink. :)

Xero 08-12-2005 12:06 AM

I watched two episodes last night... I loved the shadow trick... pretty freaky. The coffin trick was kinda a miss for me though, even though it was the one trick that the show kinda revolved around. Its fun to see him screw around and lift a frisbee and fling it...all without touching it. I can think of a few uses for that talent...
