Any Dean Koontz fans?
 

Dean Koontz is one of my favourite authors, along with James Herbert (who you should check out if you're a Koontz fan). I found some old books of his which I'm getting into. There is one of his books that I've read, I can't remember the name of it and it's bugging the hell out of me! I was hoping someone here might know the name.

It's about a man and/or woman (I can't remember) who knows who has been commiting some serial killings. The killer knows they know and chases them through, in and out of a tower block. Please help me out!

Also, have any of his books been made into movies? (other than Phantoms)

The last book that I really liked by Koontz was The Bad Place. Some of the older ones I enjoyed were Twilight Eyes, Strangers and Watchers. He doesn't really do it for me anymore, though.

I used to be right into him about ten years ago.

My thoughts on Koontz is that he isnt as great a writer as King, but his ideas are freaking awesome. Some of my favourite novels were The Watchers, Hideaway and Intensity.

I think the book is called the face of fear, its about an ex mountain climber who has visions and he is working late in a tower building and the killer knows he is there and chases him around and he rappals down the outside of the building. Hope this helps i have most of his older books but found his new ones a bit production line if you know what i mean

I loved his older stuff and then for awhile while I read all of his new releases they were good but I liked the old stuff better. Some of his more recent books though. Have been very good. Life Expectancy is great. But in answer to your question I believe it's the Face of Fear as well.

Thanks, I'll have to check a few of them out. Though I'm not sure if they are going to be the same quality as the books...

A big Koontz fan here. :)
I'm slowly working my way through his older ones, while waiting for the new ones.
There've definitely been some misses in among the hits, but to me, the good books make up for them.

Fear Nothing and its sequel, Seize the Night, are a couple of my favorites.
Now I'm waiting for the sequel to Odd Thomas to come out in November.
I believe it's entitled Forever Odd.

I kinda burned out on a lot of his recent stuff... the old stuff was, I will admit, formulatic, but it was a formula that worked...

every so often I'd read a book, and I'd have some sort of deja vu - like I knew the story from somewhere, ie Phantoms just reminded me of the old horror movie The Blob,

House of Thunder was another book I LOVED.... Reminded me a lot of Nelson DeMille's The Charm School (and would love to see it as a movie) was just a great read... and not typical horror...

I picked up the Taking because I needed something to read in the airport one night, and loved it - it was everything that i loved about his earlier books, and that easy to read style seemed to be back... Definitely worth the read..

The Frankenstein series also looks to be pretty good - I really enjoyed the first book, and the second is due out soon.. waiting for that one..

I read most of his stuff about 6-7 years ago I liked the way his books flowed, they are fairly quick reads and doesn't get overly descriptive. I picked up "The Taking" for vacation and just got around to reading it this week at work, I'm halfway thru and enjoying it.

Phantoms was my fav, actually read that one twice, Icebound is 2nd...

I always described him as Steven King "lite", King can get very wordy, Koontz always cut to the chase...

What are some other good horror writers?

HP Lovecraft
Peter Straub - Ghost Story (he also wrote a book with King that was excellent)
James Gardner - I'm not sure waht else this guy wrote, but the book Grendel - Beowolf from the standpoint of the monster is an excellent read.
WIlliam Blatty - tHe exorcist
Thomas Harris - More psychological thriller than horror - but Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon...
I'm drawing a blank on any titles, but Ray Bradbury had a bunch of good horror stories early on in his career.

My favorite Ray Bradbury book is Something Wicked This Way comes. I also like October Country. It is a compilation of short stories that are pretty creepy. I read it every autumn.

I don't know if this book quite fits the horror category, but I just finished Haunted by Chuck Palahnuik (spelling?). It had some gore of King and just some creepy messed up stories. It is interesting because it is like reading short stories with the main story running through it. The inside cover described it as Alive meets reality television and that about sums it up. It is not for people with a weak stomach. I gagged several times during reading it. It leaves images on your brain that you really don't want, but it is a good book if you like those things.

Has anybody read Cold Fire? I've just stopped reading it. Not because I finished it, because I lost interest in it.
I was really enjoying it up the the 'revelation' part when you find out where the hero's preminitions are coming from. I mean, Spoiler: Its aliens!!!, that just seemed like such a cop out to me. It's almost like an 'it was just a dream ' ending.

I mentioned him earlier, he's like a British Dean Koontz. You should check out The Fog, The Dark and '48. All excellent reads.
