Firefly is back!

Firefly is back.

For the link challenged....

Firefly, a science fiction series that was canceled midway through its first season on Fox, has found a new home on the Sci Fi Channel.

Fans of the cult-hit series Firefly will be pleased to learn that the show has been picked up by the Sci Fi Channel--just two months before the release of Serenity, a Universal Pictures film based on the series.
For the uninitiated, Firefly is a "space Western" set 500 years from now, in a spaceship that cruises the outer borders of the planetary system that humanity has taken as its new home. The crew is made up of rebels who are fleeing persecution by the unified government known as the Alliance.
Firefly made its debut on Fox in 2002 but was canceled before the end of its first season. The Sci Fi Channel will air all 15 existing episodes, including the three that never made it to TV, starting on Friday, July 22.
According to the hoopla on Slashdot, Sci Fi isn't just going to start showing what they have, they're going to show it in order, which is nice. It kind of says to me that SciFi isn't just looking for filler shit, but is actually going to try to build an audience.

I wasn't a fan of the show when it first came out, but after *coughdownloading*cough a handful of episodes, I think I might be hooked.

Redlemon 06-16-2005 06:09 AM

I missed it the first time around (it coincided with the birth of my son), buit I'm interested in checking it out. Could someone bump this thread a week or so before the first broadcast so I can schedule the TiVo?

Mephisto2 06-16-2005 06:16 AM

TV science fiction shows tend to disappoint me. I loved the original Star Trek, in all its cheezy glory, but couldn't stand anything else.

Star Trek: Next Generation
Please... Data? "Let it be so"? Worf?

Star Trek: Voyager
Silly

Star Trek: Enterprise
Never watched it

Doctor Who
Used to scare me as an 8 year old. Silly to watch now.

Farscape
Muppets in space

Stargate
Great premise, ruined by stupid characters and silly plot lines

the only other series I have fond memories of are Blakes Seven and Space:1999. These are probably a bit obscure for most TFP'ers. :-)

Anyway, my point is that I heard really good things about Firefly, but unfortunately never got to see a single episode. I hope it makes it to Australia.

The Canadian sci-fi Channel, Space has been airing these episodes for some time now... I've been thoroughly enjoying them...

WillyPete 06-16-2005 08:46 AM

They're on in theUK now.
We had to get the boxset as soon as we saw the ad for it and saw that Joss Whedon made the series.
I think it's really good. Usually the first episode or two in a new series is crap as the actors try to fill the role, but these guys just fit right in.

I enjoyed the realism of the space scenes. No sound, just light flashing when engines kick in and guns fire. The fact that the people use a mix-chinese dialect for slang and swearing is clever too.
A very 'western frontier' feel to a sci-fi show.

kutulu 06-16-2005 10:52 AM

I don't think about it as a sci fi show. There are no aliens or spaceship combat, sci fi is just the setting. It's really just a show about 9 people doing their job as smugglers. They hide from the law and get in shootouts with bad guys.

Joss did a great job. If it hadn't been cancelled it could have been better than Buffy.

Konichiwaneko 06-19-2005 01:48 AM

Firefly is an amazing series, with excellent character development and amazingly human dialog.

Definately recomend it to people who have some time to spare.

archer2371 06-19-2005 01:35 PM

Wheee, and with the movie coming out I'm one happy nerd.

Gilda 06-19-2005 02:00 PM

Mr. Mephisto: Try catching a few episodes of the new Battlestar Galactica. It's good sci-fi and it has Grace Park in it, which all by itself makes it worth watching.

NeverBorn 06-19-2005 08:04 PM

Firefly is absolutely one of the best examples of character development in tv history. If you're not attached, then you're not watching.

NO EXCUSES!!!!

Yeah, been watching it on Space myself. I loved this show. I loved it more when I got it on DVD. It breaks my heart that it was cancelled so early, and that Fox butchered it with bad advertising and a doomed timeslot.

I CAN NOT WAIT FOR SERENITY!!! 102 MORE DAYS!

guy44 06-20-2005 10:06 PM

I didn't watch the show when it first came on - I gotta say, I remember the Fox ads for Firefly made it look awful.

A few months ago I was bored and, uh, acquired the episodes and was immediately hooked.

Then I got home and tried to spread the gospel to my brother. He kept refusing to watch for a couple weeks until I finally convinced him to give it a try. We finished all the episodes in a couple days.

Last week, we both geeked out when we saw the Serenity trailer before Batman Begins.

I'm saying, if only this show got a half a chance, it could have been really damn popular. I'm dying to see the movie, and praying that Sci-Fi Channel picks up Firefly for new seasons.

(Although I'm skeptical; I remember reading that it cost a lot of money per episode to make and I'm not sure Sci-Fi Channel has that kind of resources. But man, with Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1, and Stargate Atlantis, that would be a hell of a lineup.)

odu_sonar_AE 06-22-2005 11:27 AM

Sweet!

My wife & I watched it for the brief period it was on TV, and were disappointed to see it go off the air. That was the only thing I liked to wtach on Friday nights.

Mr. Mojo 06-22-2005 11:48 AM

I had never watched it when it was on. But I bought the series on DVD and loved it. Very upseting when you see how Fox really fucked it over with time slots and showing the episodes out of order.

JStrider 06-22-2005 06:54 PM

awesome!!

a buddy got me to watch the dvds of it that he had.... its really good....

are they gonna start making new episodes and finish out the season.... or are they just re-airing the same ones?

guy44 06-23-2005 10:05 PM

Unfortunately, they are just re-airing the same ones. Cross your fingers, maybe one day we'll get new ones.

peeweesbigbong 06-24-2005 10:53 PM

Best Sci-Fi TV show.

RED DWARF!!!

hands down

Sultana 06-30-2005 01:48 PM

Funny, I have a couple of good friends with terrific taste raving over this series, so I jumped in with both feet and bought the first season on dvd (on ebay for...$30-ish?). Just got it yesterday.
Luckily I have time off for the holidays, and some couch-potato friends to entertain. WooHoo!

It did - channel seven played it at 1 or 2 am. I watched it on channel torrent - I think it is very good.

Zeraph 07-01-2005 12:25 PM

I watched it when it first came out, was really sad to see it canceled. Apparently I missed the initial showing though :( Sci Fi says I wont get it till 7/22

guy44 07-20-2005 03:41 PM

The new (and, in my opinion, superior) trailer for the Firefly movie, Serenity, just came out:

guthmund 07-21-2005 09:07 AM

Thanks, guy, but I can't get that link to work for some reason.

I assume it's the same as this one, right? Either way, here's another link.

www.uip.nl/pictures/seren/trailer2.mov

guy44 07-22-2005 03:21 PM

guthmund - Yeah, same trailer. I had a problem with my link, too, only all of a sudden it started working. Go figure.

Boy, I'm feeling very Firefly saturated, what with me watching its Sci-Fi Channel premier right now and discussing the Serenity trailer and all...

EDIT - Commercial just mentioned that the world TV premier of the new trailer will be during next Friday's airing of Firefly.

cdwonderful 07-22-2005 04:05 PM

I loved Firefly. There is no person in the known universe that is cooler than Malcolm Reynolds........bar none. Long live the Browncoats!

Coppertop 07-22-2005 04:32 PM

I thought this was a thread about the new Rob Zombie movie. Moving on...

cdwonderful 07-29-2005 06:51 PM

just saw the first install on sci fi. What happened to all the flashbacks?

Anxst 07-29-2005 07:42 PM

I am still so hoping Sci Fi wants to pick this up. It's one of the few things I found good enough on TV to watch more than once, and I'm addicted. Thankfully the movie comes out soon, and rumor has it Joss got them to sign for a 3 movie deal.

CandleInTheDark 07-29-2005 08:55 PM

Three Firefly movies? That'd be fucking orgasmic.

Gatorade Frost 07-29-2005 09:01 PM

A new trilogy?

I might be even more inclined to buy this shirt then.

NeverBorn 07-29-2005 09:38 PM

I am so seriously excited about the movie, the trailer was amazing. Its not supposed to be just retelling either...which is awesome

Three movies would be cool, but I wouldn't get excited over this just yet. A three movie deal is the standard Hollywood contract for a potential franchise. It just means that the movie studio signed up for one movie and has an option for the next two, not that all three have been greenlighted. It's also why movie franchises tend to be trilogies.

Charlatan 07-30-2005 10:08 AM

Gilda has it right...

Very true, but doesnt this situation bear a striking resemblence to a certain movie franchise that lasted beyond 3 movies. Some bad canadian actor and a guy with pointy ears?

fans demanding a series return and such.. yeah... we can only hope for 6 movies and, like, 4 spinoff series. And a cartoon, and action figures, and a slew of bad video games.

Redlemon 08-02-2005 11:51 AM

OK, I watched Serenity parts 1 and 2. I found it... pretty good. Everyone raves about the character development, and obviously two hours aren't going to be enough to establish development. So, can anyone say to me "if you make it to episode 'x' and still don't get it, you can give up now"?

Also, I see that it was cancelled mid-season, but that Sci-Fi has 3 episodes that weren't aired before. Will this make it a complete season, or are we still cut off?

guy44 08-02-2005 07:21 PM

Last question first. This is not a complete season. The last episode, Objects in Space, leaves about half a dozen huge threads (and a few minor ones) hanging...which I'm dying to find the resolution of in the movie.

As to "episode x," um...I'd say Our Mrs. Reynolds, episode #6 (7 if you split the pilot in two). By that point, alliances are shifting, recurrent bad guys have been introduced, relationships are in turmoil, and you've gotten "serious" episodes, "funny" episodes, and a pretty good idea of the strengths and (very few) limitations of the show.

So I guess I'll say, Redlemon, if you don't get Firefly by Our Mrs. Reynolds - and I might add that I think that is simply impossible - you can give up without feeling bad.

I thought the 14 episodes were the full season. I mean, I know that Fox didn't air the last two, but I was under the impression that the 14 episodes filmed were the full first season. Whedon left a lot of stuff hanging (and I'm anxious for the movie to clear a bit of that up), but I thought it was just your typical 'stay tuned for next season' stuff.

guy mentioned 'Our Mrs. Reynolds' and that's a good one, but for me the deal was clinched with 'Shindig,' which if you count the first episode as #1 & #2 then that would be episode #4.

I had been downloading the show episode by episode off the internet (I missed it first go round on Fox), and it was after 'Shindig' that I decided to download the whole damn season and subsequently buy the DVD set.

It would be great if bolstered by the success of the movie and the re-airing of the episodes, that Sci-Fi decided to greenlight another season. It would be very interesting to see where the show could go if given another chance on a network that seems to know what they're doing. I think they've done wonders with Battlestar Galactica and the Stargate franchise.

I don't imagine it will happen, but if word of mouth and a fanatic fanbase can bring 'Family Guy' back...

Xiangsu 08-03-2005 02:10 PM

Heard about the new movie and saw the trailer and decided that I would rent the first season. It is amazing, I love this show. Its so well written, best show I've seen since carnivale. Here's hoping the movie rules and leads to a new season.

Sultana 08-05-2005 02:04 PM

My friends and I ended up watching the entire series...in one day. Yes, we are somewhat obessesive. :)
I'm now a big ole fan, and am greatly looking forward to the movie.
Our Mrs. Reynolds - So d@mn funny! So many terrific one-liners.

Oh yeah, the new Battlestar Galactica is also fantastic! Highly recommended by me. :)
