Hollywood Marriages: Working and Married together
Quote:
Hollywood marriages put to test
By William Keck, USA TODAY
You know what they say about mixing business with pleasure.
Critics are calling Britney Spears and Kevin Federline's new reality show, Britney & Kevin: Chaotic, career suicide for Spears. (The one-hour opener repeats tonight on MTV; new episodes air Tuesdays on UPN.)
But more than five decades ago, Lucille Ball was told the very same thing when she put her career on the line to star in a TV series with her real-life, lesser-known husband, Desi Arnaz. Although I Love Lucy goes down in history books as an all-time TV favorite, Ball and Arnaz's marriage went down the drain.
That's why Lionel Richie is discouraging his reality-star daughter, Nicole, from allowing Fox to document her road to the altar with fiancé Adam Goldstein. "A Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz thing for her would be hilarious," the protective papa says. "But I'm a little concerned, because marriage is a tough institution by itself. Put a camera in front of that bad boy, and I just don't know."
Here's an overview of how popular Hollywood couples fared in their marriages and careers after teaming on TV.
Lucille Balle and Desi Arnez
Pleasure: The popular movie actress married the lesser-known Cuban conga player in 1940.
Business: Formed Desilu Productions. Ball cast Arnaz as her TV spouse in I Love Lucy (1951-57).
Fallout: The couple called it quits after they wrapped production on The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour (1957-60). Arnaz rarely acted again, but, through Desilu, he went on to produce Ball's follow-up sitcom, The Lucy Show. She continued to work in television. The exes remained friends, and their sitcom forever exists as a TV classic.
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline
Pleasure: The pop princess married the unknown dancer in September 2004 after meeting at an L.A. supper club.
Business: She invited him to join her on her short-lived Onyx Hotel tour. Behind the scenes footage of the couple now airs as a reality show, Britney & Kevin: Chaotic. Topics discussed so far include passing gas and favorite sexual positions.
Fallout: Premiere episode was slammed by critics and lured only 3.66 million viewers. Still married and expecting their first child together.
Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold
Pleasure: The reigning sitcom queen (Roseanne) married her longtime comedy-circuit pal in 1990.
Business: In 1989, she created a recurring role for him on her then- successful show. After their wedding, he was named executive producer.
Fallout: They divorced in 1994. After the sitcom's cancellation in 1997, Roseanne attempted unsuccessful TV comebacks in talk, reality and cooking shows. She also voiced a cow in last year's underperforming Home on the Range. Arnold regularly finds work in TV and film.
Liza Minnelli and David Gest
Pleasure:The New York, New York legend married the lesser-known music producer in 2002 in a lavish wedding attended by stars galore.
Business: The couple sold their wedding photos and signed a deal with VH1 to star in a reality series, Liza and David, which was canceled before it aired.
Fallout: They split after 16 months. Gest filed a $10 million lawsuit against Minnelli, saying she beat him during alcohol-induced rages. Minnelli has denied the abuse.
Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
Pleasure: After a long courtship and a brief separation, the blond Texas pop star married the 98 Degrees boy-band singer in 2002.
Business: The couple allowed MTV into their home to document their marriage in the 2003-05 reality series Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica.
Fallout: She has an upcoming role as Daisy Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard. He had a role on Charmed, cameos in Bewitched and is set to star in his own MTV reality series, which will focus on the making of his next album. The couple affirm the strength of the marriage, despite published reports to the contrary.
Cher and Sonny Bono
Pleasure: The leggy exotic beauty married the short, mustachioed hippie in 1964.
Business: They brought their singing act to television in the popular variety show The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour (1971-74).
Fallout: They divorced in 1975, with each attempting their own spinoff shows. In 1976, they reunited for The Sonny and Cher Show, but the magic was gone. Their relationship remained cordial as she became an icon and he became a U.S. congressman. Cher delivered the eulogy at his 1998 funeral.

I know people who work together and are couples (married or living) and it's a challenge to leave work behind or leave home behind.
I can't imagine even adding to it the "aggro" caused by the cameras and tabloids.
