Booya! 'Arrested Development' and '24' make the cut

Finally it looks like FOX has figured out how to run a television network. After years of cancelling all their best shows they are getting it together.

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - After several weeks of negotiations, Fox Broadcasting Co. has sealed a deal to bring back real-time political thriller "24" for two more seasons.

The network has also given a last-minute renewal to reigning best-comedy Emmy winner "Arrested Development," which has been on the bubble since the network cut back the show's second-season order in the spring because of underwhelming ratings.

Both shows are produced by Fox's News Corp. sibling, 20th Century Fox TV, and Imagine TV, the small-screen arm of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment.

While there has been a lot of buzz about "Arrested Development" getting a short order for next season, Fox's decision to pick up a full-season, 22-episode order of the quirky series, comes as somewhat of a surprise.

"'Arrested Development' is one of the best comedies on television," Fox's recently appointed entertainment president Peter Liguori said. "The decision to order another season becomes easy when you consider its amazing cast, creative brilliance, critical acclaim and advertiser appeal."

In addition to its returning series, Fox, which will announce its fall schedule Thursday at City Center Theater, will present to advertisers its new shows for next season, the comedies "Kitchen Confidential" and "The War at Home" and the dramas "Reunion," "Head Cases," "Bones" and "Deviant Behavior."

Very happy to hear that my two favourite shows are going to be around for at least anotgher season (or 2 in the case of 24).

booya (from wikipedia, via answers.com):
Quote:

Booya is a food that is prepared like a stew, but on a very large scale. It takes many cooks to prepare the food, and it is usually meant to serve hundreds or even thousands of people. The name booya is also used to describe the event surrounding the meal, and is probably a degenerated form of the name bouillabaisse.

In the cooking of booya, one makes a base or broth to which other food can be added derived from culinary bones. Beef, chicken, and pork are popular meats for booya, and vegetables such as carrots, rutabagas, and potatoes are also put into the mix. A wide variety of seasonings are often used.

The preparation of booya often takes up to two days, generally cooked in specially designed booya kettles that can hold more than 50 gallons of the stew. Generally made for charity events, some community groups and churches have their own kettles, while other groups rely on municipal kettles. Highland Park in St. Paul, Minnesota has a shed with 5 kettles which can have a total yield of 350 gallons of booya. The kettles have been around for several decades, but as of December 2003, there is controversy regarding the safety of the burners used to heat them.

The noise a shotgun makes when fired is called booya by some. This meaning is used by the gangsta rap band Booya Tribe, a group of Samoans.

Booya is also used as a motivational utterance by many groups, such as Marines, other members of the military, and violent criminal gangs.
I think it is also a meaningless exclamation used by one of the commentators on ESPN.

Thank god Arrested Development made the cut. It is the best comedy on tv right now.

Was there any doubt about 24 coming back though? I really didn't think it was in trouble at all.

I sure hope not. I guess there's always the chance of a show going to another network or something, but when the hell does that happen?

If I could ask of one thing from 24, it would be a change of scenery. Wouldn't it be awesome if a season of 24 took place in another country? There's been a lot of reference of stuff Jack's done overseas, so I'm sure they could come up with something that would work.

Ya, I think they should send Jack overseas as well. Can't really think of a suitable story line, but I'll leave that up to the writers who do such a good job ;).

It would also be cool if Jack was put on the secret service and had to protect the president or something.

Gilda 05-22-2005 08:45 PM

It would be difficult. The "real time" format of the show means a single metro area has to be the focus of most of the show, and with the show being shot in Los Angeles, it makes sense from a production point of view to set the show there.

I think the big news on 24 is the two season commitment, which is very unusual.

3zos 05-22-2005 11:22 PM

may mean a cliff hanger at the end of the next season? i know with the ratings they've pulled this year and adding that to four successful seasons they'll be getting more money for production.

[rant]
(try not to take this as partisan, im apolitical as far as declaring a condoned side, and take my issues to grapple with one at a time with no party line)
maybe now that they're locked into a 2 season contract they can stop pandering to red states with all this (at least in my opinion) obvious political drivel trying to give creedence to torture and other unnecessary plot devices.
not flaming, i love the show, and maybe if there were consequences to jacks actions, and maybe if anyone who called into question the practice of tortue wasn't stifled with the utterly logical and complete arguement of "but he ended up being right, so there", and maybe if it didn't happen every other god damned episode, i wouldn't care so much. but it's a pet peeve that seems to be particular to this season, hopefully not so much with the following.
and cheers to kiefer for at least trying to dispell any potential for encouraging xenophobia, though there are those, my parents for example, who see any example of terrorists being arabic, or islamic for that matter, as a justification of their hate of islam and the arabic peoples.
[\rant]

here's to hoping we get some nicely framed espionage stuff in the following seasons, rumours are the next setting being NYC.

i want 24 to be the longest running television series in history. i think its a better show than any other show like friends or seinfeld. i dont care where they go. i just want originally cast of 24 plus palmer as pres, kim, and chase minus edgar and the current president (i forgot his name, lol).

guthmund 05-24-2005 06:20 AM

I wasn't all that shocked to hear 24 made the cut, but I am pleasantly surprised 'Arrested' was renewed.

It's one of my new favorite shows. Now they just need to find a decent time slot to put it in.

I just noticed this so sorry if it has been said else where. Did you guys know the narrator for Arrested Development is Ron Howard? Cool, IMO.

Cheers!

I think AD's probably one of the best comedies on TV. I hope they don't end next season early like this did this one.

"And that’s when Maeby realized she had become a successful film executive."

Here's an joke you wouldn't have gotten unless you knew it was Ron Howard. I thought it was great.

Jessie (to George Michael) "....you just spoiled your father’s last chance at being happy. So I hope *you’re* happy, Opie."
Narrator "Jessie had gone too far- and had best watch her mouth"

ChasingAmy 06-11-2005 09:23 PM

Wow. I totally missed that one. Going to find that eppy and watch it again. Thanks Jeff!!
