Blu-Ray to be the new standard
Sorry mods, didn't know where else to put this. Move it to a more appropriate forum if you see so fit.

I heard this earlier today too, but I don't think they have settled on using the Blu-Ray name for the new format.

It's nice to see Sony learned from there mistakes with Beta over VHS.......... lol now they can put the hurt on other companies instead of vice versa.

Arrrh, does this mean my entire DVD collection will now go obsolete in way of the VHS cassette tapes?!!! I'm sure I'll want to replace my movies with the new formats since they will have much better image quality and sound too. I'd hate to have to start my collection all over again.
I know it'll probably be a few years before it becomes the new standard, but I'm conflicted on this. On the one side, I wish they don't replace the current DVD format, but on the other side, I know I would enjoy the improved quality the new format will bring! :hmm: |
I believe both formats are backwards compatible. On the downside, Sony and Toshiba have broken off talks to develop a unified format. And I wouldn't worry about any new formats either. It will be years before anything becomes the "new standard." DVD hasn't even established itself as a "standard." Its been around for less than 10 years and its future is already uncertain. Contrariwise, look at what the CD has accomplished. It remains the standard for over 20 years now, and is not going anywhere anytime soon. It has toppled vinyl, cassette, minidisc, DAT, DVD-A, and SACD. Contrary to what a lot of (less than educated) people think, downloading will not become the norm and make physical media obsolete.

Engadget.com says that the merger talks are back on.. the 3 ceos are gonna get together and (hopefully) hash out all concerns and problems.
This bodes well for us as consumers. |
