Agreed, Bacchanal. "28 Days Later" is the gem of the zombie genre. Instant change over, main character turning, fantastic suspensse, great acting and directing; it really sets the bar.

Night of the Living Dead.
HANDS DOWN!
Runner-ups are Bio Zombie, Day of the Dead, and Dawn of the Dead(both versions).

28 days later isn't necessarily a zombie movie.
My vote goes to Day of the Dead, which is also my favorite horror movie of all time, but I'm sure Land of the Dead will take that title when released in October. I also can't wait for Undead to come out this summer.

A viral zombie is still a zombie. From Answers.com:
Quote:
Zombies are regularly encountered in horror- and fantasy-themed fiction, films, video games and role-playing games. They are typically depicted as mindless, shambling, decaying corpses with a hunger for human flesh, most famously in Night of the Living Dead. Often, the zombies will have supernatural strength and constitution, and sometimes (more often in comedy zombie films) will be able to run, or even still possess the ability to hold conversation. Some films (such as 28 Days Later) feature living but otherwise zombie-like humans, usually as the result of disease.
And go Raiders.

^^ That is correct; they do possess similar zombie-like attributes (although few), but sway from the actual definition of a zombie, which is defined as a corpse reanimated. If you consider living humans infected with a virus that makes them attack the living (28 days later), then I can see how they can be viewed as zombies. The term can be used generally to define more then a decaying corpse brought to life, but from my understanding, it originated from voodoo cults in Africa and such who brought the dead to life, which is the zombies you see in films such as Night of the Living Dead. That's how I think zombies should be anyway, but like I said, it can be used more generally.

Also, do not fear, the Raiders will dominate the league next season.

Well, if you don't consider the virally zombied in zombie movies, then I'd have to go with one of the gory italian zombie movies. Lucio Fulci's 'Zombie' was basically perfect (known in italy as 'Zombi 2').

I really enjoyed Romero's usual SFX guy Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead, but then again Romero's entire "____ of the Dead" series is awesome! Day of the Dead is probably my favorite though, Bubs is the single most kickass zombie of all time.

I have seen a lot of zombie flicks, from all the mainstream ones to more obscure Italian crapfests. Hell, I've even seen a movie that featured both zombies AND hardcore sex (made in Italy of course). I have to say that my favorite of all time is the Dawn of the Dead remake. I absolutely loved the black humor that was oozing from that flick. Night and the original Dawn were pretty damn good and revolutionary for their time, but Day was a snooze fest with uninteresting, one dimensional characters, and a plot that went no where (it did, however, feature the best gore and makeup effects of the trilogy).

The Italian flicks, while entertaining, shouldn't be seriously considered for best of the genre. They all fall into the so bad it's good category. And yes, that zombie who kicked the shark's ass is a bad motherfucker.

Shaun of the Dead is the best lampoon of the zombie genre, which was previously held by Return of the Living Dead 1 and 2 (not 3, that one just sucks).

28 Days Later is a good flick, I highly enjoyed it, and yes, it is a "zombie" movie, even though the antagonists aren't really zombies. It follows the same formula as any other zombie movie, the only difference is that the "zombies" don't eat their victims, they just beat them to death. That's good for people who get queasy during the obligatory gut muching scene.

Oh, I almost forgot about the Resident Evil movies. Sure, there were zombies in them, but they didn't feature prominently enough for me to call them zombie movies. If you base your naming conventions on what kills the most characters, I'd call the first one a laser movie. They both suck as well.

I typed "flick" a few too many times. Sorry.

I've seen most of the ones mentioned here, except for the foreign flicks, and I agree with the Dawn of the Dead remake. I love zombie movies, but the originals didn't really do much for me. I liked 28 Days Later a lot for being an original zombie idea, but the new DotD was just great overall. I love the way they did zombie baby. That shit was too creepy.

and the Dawn remake was good, but the best death in the movie didn't even involve a zombie. The chic getting chainsawed in the van was just too good.

Zombie movies are like pizza and sex. Even the bad ones are pretty dang good.

Having said that, I really can't decide on a favorite zombie film. Original Dawn for it's characters and story, Night remake for make-up and Tony Todd, Dawn remake for Ving (nuff said). Day for one of the scariest zombie scene's of all time (the elevator coming down, filed with the undead and the men below, whoe realize they have no way out. Brrrrrrr.)

Shawn is certainly a new fave. Good mix of humor and horror. Return is great as well (at least 0ne is, Two was ok and Three sucked rocks).

If you enjoy any of these, may I suggest the excellent comic book "The Walking Dead." It deals more with the people surviving day to day in a world of the undead that on the zombies themselves. Part of the reason I was a little turned off by the Dawn remake was the directors commentary. Every time a zombie got it's head blown off or someone got ate, he'd say, "That's what you want. That's why you came." Sorry dude, but I'm just as interested in the people who are trying to live through the situation, even more so in fact. "The Walking Dead" deals with those people and it's one of the few comic books I read anymore.

Why hasn't GH found this post yet?

Now, I would agree that 28 Days Later is without a doubt the best in film making. It really wasn't your typical zombie flick. It was something new, and had some damn good writing. But Its not my favorite.
My favorite would have to be Return of the Living Dead, as an EMT this cracked me up. "Send more Parrrraaameddics," says the zombie. And the zombies ate brains.

I just saw Shaun of the Dead. Awesome. Its great.

I have not seen Dead Alive, or Wild Dead.

And Viral Zombies count. Those are my favorites. With all the blood, and the spuing of the guts.

Absolutely Yummy.

Yes! I have seen BioZombie, in fact, I love it so much that I purchased it. I definitely think this is the best zombie movie ever made.

I understand why Night of the Living Dead and 28 Days Later are so popular. They represent the pinnacle of the zombie movie as the product of a post-war global culture trying to deal with the horror of nuclear warfare. I have read many examples of scholars linking up the tradition of zombie movies with the photographs of a-bomb victims in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and after seeing some of those photographs first-hand the resemblance is quite striking. Living Dead represents this, and 28 Days Later is the evolution of it in the age of chemical warfare as the replacement for the a-bomb.

Other new zombie films like SotD, and Biozombie, represent a shift in the tradition of zombie movies, where the threat is no longer so much one of actual warfare, but a cultural warfare being played out in pop culture. I remember one of the funniest, and most moving lines in Biozombie (a chinese film) being, as the character is dying, "I just wanted to see Titanic with my sweetheart on my birthday." Many scenes are intercut with shots from the game House of the Dead, which the protagonists are frequently playing before the zombie epidemic begins to present itself. This game is presumably why the protagonists are so deft at eliminating zombies. There are many other interesting and hilarious video game references and stereotypes, speaking of which, most of the characters are. Also, the epidemic itself, is a chemical agent designed for terrorism (similar to 28 days) but it is being distributed in soda pop, another pop culture icon.

Anyway, thanks for letting me rant for a little while. If you like zombie movies, and you haven't seen this flick, you should. Just be prepared for a lower budget than you're used to with American films, as not only is this a Chinese film but it's also independent.
