77th Annual Oscars

http://oscar.com/nominees/nominees.html

so the Oscar nominees are out. My first thought is: Jude Law must really be terrible. The only movie he wasn't in was Spiderman 2 and he still doesn't even get a nomination?

But in seriousness, what are your thoughts about the oscars?

I was disappointed that Paul Giamatti wasn't nominated for best actor but Thomas Hayden Church got nominated for best supporting actor.

Giamatti carried Church thru that entire film. I'm not saying he was bad, but the true gem in that movie was Paul Giamatti.

Only 2 nominations (i think) for Eternal Sunshine...

Seems that a whole lot of movies which have just come out recently are getting heaps of nominations eg: Aviator, Sideways, MIllion DOllar Baby, Hotel Rwanda, Ray.

none of these are currently out in Australia yet....

Even Kinesy, Closer and Finding Neverland only came out recently. Not that this is a slur, it's just seems to be a lot of recent movies.

that's the point of late-in-the-year movies. Its unfortunate that the nominators have short term memories. They look at all the movies that come out in the last half (quarter?) of the year and unless a movie is really something special, it gets no consideration if its out in the summer or spring.

Jamie Foxx is the new Cuba Gooding Jr. Two years from how he'll be starring in Snow Dogs II.

As if Tom Hanks hadn't made some really crappy role choices since bagging a double.

Eternal Sunshine was the best movie of the year as far I can tell. The fact that there was only 3 movies put up for best visual effects seems strange. Team America was the most technically interesting films I have seem in a long time. The scale of the puppet work was mind blowing. It seems to me that every year the same 3 or 4 movies get most of the nominations. That's really sad. There are so many great films that so few get the recognition they deserve.

I'm sad The Life Aquatic didn't get anything, I know it wasn't the type of movie to get nominations, but it was really good, put together wonderfully.

No way. Cuba Gooding Jr. had a catch phrase. There is no way to recover from a catch phrase.

Even though I liked Fahrenheit 9/11, Michael Moore can get on my nerves and I guess I am not shocked to see it got nothing. I didn't like The Passion very much but I am glad the cinematography got a nod. The movie was a little "extreme" but I have to admit it was gorgeous to see.

I'm a bit happy that a germay film was nominated:

but I don't think the film will win.

I was bummed by this as well. Paul Giamatti was excellent in that movie, definitely deserved a nod.

It wasn't eligible for best documentary, since he tried to get it played on TV, which is against the rules. Some people thought it deserved a best picture nod... then again, some people can shoot themselves in the head with a nailgun and not notice.

Shwartzenegger - "I'll be back". Went on to become governer of California.

Clint Eastwood - "Do ya feel lucky?" Went on to make numerous not-so-shitty, lower-grossing movies with more critical acclaim.

Sean Connery - "Bond; James Bond" Has had a very successful, if hit-and-miss acting career.

Robert Deniro - "You talkin' to me?" Also very successful acting career.

I DEEM YOUR THEORY DEBUNKED! Also, the Oscars are stupid. They're all stupid and bad and not good and dumb.

I don't know if it's so much the nominators having short term memories so much as the recent trend of all the studios to wait until the very end of the year to release all the movies most likely to be critically acclaimed in hopes that it builds Oscar buzz.

I still haven't seen Sideways, but I'm also disappointed that Giamatti wasn't nominated. I'm sure I'll agree that he deserved a nomination when I finally see it. Was DiCaprio really that good in The Aviator? He really just bothers me and I can't see him being that convincing as Howard Hughes.

Farenheit 9/11 wasn't eligable for best documentary. [edit] beaten... guess I should read the entire thread

It was eligable for Best Picture, but failed to receive a nomination.

I was angry with the fact that Carrey wasn't nominated for best actor... Just because he was a goof back in the day... But look at Foxx, he was in Bootie Call

Carrey deserved a nod. He should be more than a little peeved.

Still...Cate Blanchett is looking good for her role as Hepburn in The Aviator. Have yet to see the flick, but apparently she's excellent.

DiCaprio was very good in The Aviator, as was Cate Blanchett. I saw other movies this year that were better than The Aviator though.

Completely agree with you. This just reminds me of why I don't put any stock into the winners of Academy Awards, since it's so full of politicking and not completely about recognizing films completely based on merit.

Eternal Sunshine was clearly my favorite movie of the year, and there were a lot of great movies to come out this past year. How they didn't get even a nomination for effects or art direction is completely baffling. Also, Carrey was definitely hosed again. The Academy is way overdue in giving Jim Carrey some credit. He may have started out as "that guy that talks and sings out of his ass" but has since become a really really great all-around actor. His performance in Eternal Sunshine was one of my favorites of the year and he definitely deserves some credit for his role.

However, the Best Actor category is the tightest and most crowded I've seen in a long time. They could double, or even triple the nominees if they could nominate every actor that got serious buzz for the award. But, I guess it doesn't really matter as it seems Jamie Foxx is going to run away with the award. I believe Vegas has him at 6-5 odds to win.

Giamatti and Carrey were definitely the two actors I was most upset about not getting nominated. I don't Sideways is as good as most of the critics are making it out to be, but I still thought it was a really really good movie, and Paul Giamatti definitely carried the film despite it being touted as an ensemble piece. I'm just glad to see Don Cheadle getting some credit, as I think he, along with Carrey and Giamatti are among the most underrated actors today.
