So, my buddy wanted to go see this movie, and we hadn't gone to the theatres for a while, so I thought sure . . . What the hey, why not. Another one of those films that I knew nothing about the plot, I just knew it was an action movie with Morpheus and That guy from training day in it.

We had to sit in the front row . . . (hate that), but were immediately immersed in an extremely fun movie.

Great plot, great acting, great action. I haven't seen the original, which I guess was a John Carpenter movie, but this one rocked my socks off. Fishborne plays a thug who is famous for various things, including taking six bullets and killing a cop. Ethan Hawke plays the title character and pulls it off very well. Leguizamo plays a psycho inmate and is a little annoying, but he pulls it off so well, he keeps it from going over the edge into a distraction.

Very good movie, I'd give a strong 8.5/10

I'm a fan of the original, but I don't feel there's any use in comparing it to the remake.

Having said that, the remake does have some decent scenes. The frantic opening sequence, which reminded me a lot of NARC, was probably the standout.

Unfortunatley, it also had some rather uninspired moments, including a Die Hard 2 reference (at least, that's the first time I've seen the ice in the eye trick) and some inappropriately talky moments.

But, it's not all bad, and while it doesn't have the low budget, anything goes feeling of the original (I know I said I wasn't going to compare the two, but shit...) it does have a few decent moments.

5.5 out of 10. There are better films to be seen out there right now. Check this one only if you've already seen them.
