Random musings on the Golden Globes

I’m usually fairly accurate when I try to predict winners of awards shows but this year I wasn’t exactly on fire. It wasn’t my fault though as the winners of some awards surprised nearly everyone. Anyways, a selected recap for those of you who pay attention to awards:

Best Musical/Comedy: Sideways.
Nothing shocking here, Sideways is the most critically acclaimed film of the year. I saw it down at the Fox Tower and it’s quite good. I would have enjoyed it more if I was middle-aged like the characters but it’s an excellent movie nonetheless.

Best Drama: The Aviator
I kinda of expected Million Dollar Baby to win but The Aviator was what I expected to be next most likely to win. I saw The Aviator and it was definitely good but not the best movie of the year in my opinion. I haven’t seen Million Dollar because it hasn’t been FRICKIN RELEASED in Portland but I certainly plan on seeing it.

Best Actor- Musical/Comedy: Jamie Foxx, Ray
I haven’t seen Ray but I’m almost certain Jamie is going to win the Oscar for best actor. Everyone I’ve heard from finds his performance riveting. Best Drama winner Leonardo Dicraprio has no shot of winning the golden man.

Best Supporting Actor- Clive Owen, Closer
Best Supporting Actress- Natalie Portman , Closer
I wouldn’t have been surprised if both supporting statues went to actors in the same movie but only if that movie was Sideways and the awards went to Thomas Church and Virginia Madsen. I haven’t seen Closer (I need to see more movies…) but this gives me another reason to watch it. Plus I’m happy for Queen Amidala, she’s soooo hot.

Best Director: Clint Eastwood, Million Dollar Baby
That’s who I expected to win and another indication that Martin Scorcese will have to wait a little longer to get his first Oscar.

Best Television Series – Drama: Nip/Tuck
I’ve never seen this show before but even those who have did not expect it to win over 24 and The Sopranos. Those wacky voters.

Best Television Series - Comedy: Desperate Housewives
If you’re not watching this show, you have to start. Go program your VCR/TiVo now, this journal will be here when you get back. Hilarious but still able to hold up a dramatic storyline. The women are quite MILFy as well. (Aside: I hate it when someone refers to a 30 year-old as a MILF. I know there’s a lot of 30 year-old moms but in my view a MILF has to be old enough to be YOUR mom. So a MILF as far as I’m concerned is a woman who is over 40. Otherwise if you pick ANY mom, then a 18 year-old could count an that just makes the term meaningless.)

Best Actor - Comedy Series: Jason Bateman in Arrested Development
Here’s the OTHER show people need to start taping/TiVoing. The problem with it is that it doesn’t have a laugh track and has black/subtle humor and much of America is much to stupid to give it a chance. Arrested won the Emmy last year for Best Comedy Series and it’s still in danger of getting canceled, go figure.

Best Actress - Drama Series: Mariska Hargitay in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Also surprised to see her win considering this was her nomination and that she was competing with Edie Falco and Jennifer Garner. I have never seen any of the L&O spinoffs: the original is quite good and I can’t even catch up on those. By the way, Mariska Hargitay is the daughter of Jayne Mansfield, who some would describe as a poor man's Marilyn Monroe.

Best recently single actress I’d like to be my “Friend”: Jennifer Aniston
Come on, what did Brad have that I didn’t? Besides the multi-million dollar bank account, washboard abs, acting career, cheekbones, and sense of style? Come on, name one thing.
