Did anyone watch Tilt on ESPN?

Cause I thought it BLEW. It was so hacked, and I have a feeling the real pros aren't going to like it. The cameos from TJ and Daniel were bad, and the whole show makes it look like poker players are a bunch of sleazy crooks. The dialogue itself was horrible, not to mention the stereotypical way women and minorities were portrayed (a group of black men can't have a poker game without drawing guns?).

I don't think it's going to last.

Yep, I watched the first episode, thought it was pretty bad ... don't think i'll being watching it again.

I wasn't too impressed either. I actually looked forward to checking it out (don't know why, considering it's an ESPN drama). Probably won't bother seeing it again unless there's absolutely nothing on.

This article here was a pretty accurate review of the show:

They showed 5 hands, all straights. I really did not like the show, too many plots line introduceds at once that will never move anywhere. Did they really get both writers of rounders for this movie cause they are good writers and this show is not. Playmakers was much better

I wonder if the WPT will complain to ESPN and get it pulled from the air for showing too much of the "bad parts" of the game. :)

Soooo many things wrong with this show.
1) What was with the Matador getting a random blowjob at the beginning?
2) If the Matador was such a great player, why does he have to cheat? There was nothing great about the hand he won, he caught a straight against another great hand, trips. There was no great play at all, he got lucky.
3) A game with black people involving a gun battle? Could it be any more stereotypical
4) The cheesy lines. I do not believe the writers of Rounders wrote this shitty show.

In conclusion, it was a hyped out show that was so ridiculously awful.

Well just with the Matador part, the way the show insinuated it, the Matador is working for the casino and making them money by winning. So they are helping him cheat, so that he, and therefore they, will continue to win.

Not that I, um, actually watched or anything...:p

I agree, "Playmakers" was SO much better.

I'm a big poker fan and man did that show stink. One of the cameo's was Daniel Negreanu. He wasn't very happy with it either, and he was in it. He has more to say over at his poker blog. If you are in to poker, it is a worthwhile read. Don't know about links on this site, so just search for it on google.

I had mixed feelings about this show.. It is well done, decent actors. But extremely cheesy.. I think it's hard to make a serious show about poker without sounding cheesy. The plot of this show, 3 up & coming poker players try and take down an old pro is mostly the problem. Maybe they can change it up mid stride and make it watchable, but I think I will lose interest pretty soon if nothing changes.

wordssmith22 01-18-2005 02:54 PM

was it just me or was the entire show extremely poorly lit? stylistically that might have been what they were going for, but i thought it was really annoying. and i agree, the show so far seems like garbage. but so many people are watching just for the poker scenes that i don't think the ratings will suffer a huge drop. and the scene where the woman, as the little girl, shows her straight and says to the other guy, you got the ass end, i thought that was hilarious.

goddfather40 01-18-2005 10:17 PM

I think the general consensus here is right on the money. It really was kind of corny and haphazard. It's unfortunate because I think Michael Madsen has a lot of potential in this type of role.

The scene in the back of the club was revolting. I mean come on...

Black poker player #1 raises, Black poker player #2 claims #1 string raised, #1 pulls guns, #2 pulls gun, they threaten to pop a cap in each other, #1 pulls his raise back and all is right with the world.

I think that scene was actually a foolish attempt to show how diverse poker has become.
