I gotta ask about that one, it's come up quite a few times, too. Now, I think Kaufman is absolutely brilliant, and "Being John Malcovich" would definitely make my top ten list (if I wasn't far too lazy to compile one), but ESOTSM just seemed eternally dull. Great in concept, great acting (I love Kate Winslet, and Jim Carry really surprised me here), but just soooo dull.

I understand that it's all subjective and personal opinion and all that, but it's just weird to see this as the only Kaufman film people pick - why am I missing the appeal here?

To me it wasn't dull at all. If a movie is great it doesn't matter how dull it is. For example I loved lost in translation. Eternal Sunshine was a great story, and an awesome movie. I loved the direction of it, and the acting was amazing. It was the perfect little movie.
