Constantine, the movie.

Has anyone else seen the trailer yet? I saw it as a preview to Ocean's 12 lastnight and was pretty impressed. I was at first, of course, thinking "boy this looks like a lame re-creation of The Matrix," but I actually think it has some potential.

To me it kind of looks like The Exorcist meets The Cell meets The Matrix (part one) as far as the visuals and overall "trippy-ness" goes. I'm rather excited for this one to be honest.

it's got the possibility of being awesome or being absolute shit. Keanu Reeves is not a great actor - the only successful movies he's been in have been mainly successes because of the supporting cast. This one does look like it has promise though.

guthmund 12-18-2004 12:22 AM

Just by looking at the trailer, I have to say I'm pretty excited as well.

I love movies like this and although I'm not excited about Mr. Reeves, I would be willing to shill out the cash to see this one.

Pellaz 12-18-2004 01:25 AM

I've seen the trailer, and I'm coming down firmly on the side of 'absolute shit'.

Reeves as Constantine? Sheesh. Maybe we can have Leo Dicaprio playing Superman next.

Another example of hollywood butchering something they were given.

/not bitter, no sir.

Jonsgirl 12-18-2004 10:55 AM

looks like utter crap

on a stick.

CinnamonGirl 12-18-2004 10:59 AM

I thought it was another Matrix movie when the preview first started.

It has the potential to be interesting, going by the storyline. Is it based on a comic book? I have no clue about comics...

Yup, (nerdity follows)

Constantine was a bit character in DCs Swamp Thing. Later, he got his own series in the Vertigo line of comics (Where you also found things like Sandman and Preacher). Put mildly, the character is a bit of a wanker, although, from the readers perspective, a lovable one. (And yup, he's a brit....Keanu doing an accent...joy). He's a huckster and a trickster, who most definately doesn't go around waving some giant mutant stage pistol. He's much more a Loki figure than he's John Wayne.

The movie looks to be something on the order of Catwoman, where they decided to take the name and throw it on something almost completely unrelated, to me.

I therefore put forth a petition to rename it: The Devils Advocate 2: Daddy Strikes Back

Nikilidstrom 12-19-2004 09:19 AM

I agree that Reeves is a bad pick for this character. It would be like putting Ryan Reynolds, Jessica Biel, and Parker Posey in a vampire action movie. Oh, wait.....
:)

mikeylips 12-19-2004 10:31 AM

The movie looked pretty good when I saw the trailer. I meant to look up more about it when I got home but I had forgotten thanks for the reminder! Keannu Reeves looks like he might be just "ok" in that movie but even considering that the movie looks pretty awesome. Can't wait for more trailers and then the actual movie.

Homey_V 12-19-2004 12:49 PM

Why does anyone let Keanu Reeves act in anything anymore? Seriously? He's got the acting talent of a rock-pumpkin hybrid... But less squishy...

inharmony 12-20-2004 04:56 AM

I saw previews this past summer...then it was put on hold, now back again? Does anyone know when it is supposed to come out?

m0rpheus 12-20-2004 03:57 PM

First off Reeves is not John Constantine. This movie is not going to be a John Constantine movie.

If it was called anything but Constantine (or Hellblazer, the name of the comic that Constantine stars in) then I might be mildly interested. Instead its just Hollywood taking a crap on another comic character.

If you want to know about the real Constantine try this link\

Willravel 12-20-2004 04:08 PM

Keanu is playing a character named John Constantine. Whether this is the JC from Hellblazer is a matter of opinnion, for sure, but he is playing John Constantine.

sinjien 12-23-2004 12:07 AM

That was hella funny Pellaz. Pardon the NorCal slang. That being said Reeves is a little on the weird side and that could lend well to the role. I hope he doesnt let the comic book community down though. I am looking forward to it though. Looks a lot like hes still The One but with dark powers.

Rawrr 02-17-2005 09:50 PM

Coming out tomorrow.. (today if you are on the East Coast!) I think it will be good..might try to see it tonight

webfiend 02-17-2005 10:42 PM

I'll probably see it. It's can't possibly be worse than Johnny Mnemonic, right?

Right?

Okay, well maybe. But there's no way it can be worse than Attack of the Clones, and Keanu wasn't even in that one.

-Ever- 02-17-2005 11:31 PM

Buying tickets first thing tomorror for the late-night show!

SecretMethod70 02-17-2005 11:39 PM

anyone wanna take bets on who will be the worse actor in this movie, Keanu Reeves or Gavin Rossdale?

SiNai 02-18-2005 12:01 AM

Ha, but if it wasn't for the showy trailer which featured music from Celldweller, I wouldn't be excited at all for this movie. Seems cool though.. At least for the special effects. Gavin Rosendale is a cool guy and all but I don't think he's gonna make a good demon.

itch vaccine 02-18-2005 04:34 AM

I don't know what's so bad about the show

I saw it and had a blast.

RogueHunter65 02-18-2005 10:57 AM

I agree with what a couple of you have said, the movie looks like it could be sweet or one of the worst movies ever. Kind of like the movie Hellboy. It had the possiblity of being an awesome movie or being bad. I felt that Hellboy fell short for my expectations. And I think that Constantine will fall short as well.

Rawrr 02-18-2005 07:13 PM

Well I just got back and I enjoyed the movie.. Gavin plays a good part but I had no clue he was in the movie! heh!

Redjake 02-18-2005 07:14 PM

Hellboy was really good; I enjoyed it a lot. Cool movie with cool ideas and acting.

Just got back from Constantine. They managed to turn a movie that could have been incredible into trash. Maybe worth a DVD rental. The horrible use of CGI in parts that didn't need CGI ruined the entire movie. If you can't make it look real, moviemakers, don't use it. The acting was pretty good, not the best. Pretty mediocre movie. People who go to the movies for popcorn and soda will like it.

Which is the majority of America :) I think it'll be interesting to see how ticket sales went.

grendel 02-18-2005 07:50 PM

i thought Hellboy was great, but i wasn't familiar with the comic books...

lite campfire 02-18-2005 11:29 PM

Hellboy was pretty good, compared to a lot of other things. If Constantine turns out to be at least as good as Hellboy, I'll consider it worth my money.

On the 'true to comic roots' score, it looks to fail miserably. According to what I've read about Hellblazer and the review I've read of this movie, they seem to have almost nothing in common at all.

whocarz 02-18-2005 11:52 PM

I saw it today, I thought it was a decent movie. I was definately entertained, and that's all I ask for in a movie. Would I see it again? Probably not.

RogueHunter65 02-19-2005 12:05 AM

I just saw the movie and I thought it was pretty good. I liked the way they made the devil and hell look. The movie meet my expectations. I probally would see it again.

bgivnin 02-19-2005 12:24 AM

I thought Constantine was great! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. I'm not a comic book fan at all, so I go into all these 'comic book character turned movie star' movies open minded. I was not disappointed in Constantine in the least.

Hellboy, on the other hand, was complete crap and a waste of 9 bucks. Every enemy was the same enemy and the ending was thrown together in what seemed like 10 seconds. The fish-type dude was cool, though. :)

Kadath 02-19-2005 02:08 PM

The movie needed better acting, writing, directing, and most of all editing. I was literally falling asleep in some parts, and the movie dragged in many places. The acting was wooden and some of the dialogue was so stupid I was pained. Bottom line, it was better than I expected, but only because I was expecting something as bad as AvP.

Much agreed

Grasshopper Green 02-19-2005 05:19 PM

I just got back from it, and I usually hate these types of movies, but I was entertained. The local paper gave it 3 1/2 stars (HAHA), and the theater was packed. It was a pretty average movie but I don't feel like it was a waste of money.

Painted 02-19-2005 07:15 PM

When I first saw the name of it I thought "Oh boy a movie about Constinapole! I love Bronze-Age war movies!"

Krycheck 02-19-2005 07:54 PM

It was a pretty good movie. I too was expecting to be dissapointed but I'm glad I wasn't. I was expecting some cliche lines but there was none. This was Keanue's better movies (I know it's not saying much). I did enjoy his smart ass/asshole'ish attitude too. Him giving the bird to Lucifer was sweet :)

I would recomend it to anyone that liked the trailer.

SiNai 02-20-2005 02:17 AM

Just saw it tonight, and enjoyed it overall. Worth a ticket.

THere were some terribly bad dialogue though.. Whats John gonna do now? He's got some cleaning up to do. Will he see his woman around? Yeah. He'd like that.. I was angered throughout the movie at parts where I could barely hear what they were saying, which was quite often.. with people dying so much, last words were whispered every 5 minutes or so.

I didn't mind the CGI for the most part, only when Lucifer appeared I thought it was a little superfluous.

Apparently the director felt Reeves would not be a convincing Brit and so they made him originate from California.

Nikilidstrom 02-20-2005 11:52 AM

Overall, I was pretty impressed with this treatment. As usual, Reeves turned in a sub par acting performance. But at least they didn't turn this into an outright action movie. Except for the Holy Shotgun of Antioch, I thought they stuck pretty well to the overall feel of the comics. The movie would have been better if they had found an English actor to play Constantine, though. They would be able to pull off John's dry wit better than Keanu, who made it look forced at times.

Um, Constantinople was the name of Istanbul in the middle ages. In the Bronze Age, it was called Byzantium.

This public service announcement brought to you by Campbell's Soup. Mmm mmm good!

Esoteric 02-21-2005 08:53 PM

Looks good to me, I plan on seeing it soon.

Fire 02-26-2005 01:14 PM

I was suprisingly entertained by this movie- and I hate keanu with a cark and seething passion- I am not a hardcore fan of the comics, but am fammiliar with them, and thought they did not do poorly with the adaptation, and they made it accessable without gutting it as they often do.....
